A practical and heterogeneously catalyzed Stille, homo-coupling, and Suzuki carbonylation reaction has been reported using Pd nanoparticles supported on amino-vinyl silica-functionalized magnetic carbon nanotube (CNT@Fe3O4@SiO2-Pd) for the efficient synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl ketones from aryl iodides. A wide variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl ketones were obtained in high yields under CO gas-free conditions using Mo(CO)(6) as an efficient carbonyl source. Considering the atom economy of Ph3SnCl, less than an equimolar amount can be applied in Stille transformation, which is of great importance due to the toxicity of organotin derivatives. Moreover, no phosphine ligand and external reducing agent were necessary in these coupling carbonylation reactions. This heterogeneous Pd catalyst offers high activity with very low palladium leaching. Finally, the catalyst can be reused and recycled for six steps without loss in activity, exhibiting good example of sustainable methodology. Graphic abstract

Photoprocesses in bis(15-crown-5)-1,3-distyrylbenzene (DSB) and its complexes with barium and lead perchloatewere studied in MeCN by absorption, luminescence, and laser kinetic spectroscopy. The triplet DSB molecules are involved in the degradation of electronic excitation energy, together with fluorescence processes. The most efficient intersystem crossing accompanied by a decrease in the DSB fluorescence quantum yield, occurs for the lead perchlorate complex. Using quantum chemistry methods (DFT and TDDFT), the geometry, structure, and transition energies to the S1 state were calculated for trans- and cis-isomers of DSB in the gas phase and with allowance for the solvent and for 1:1 and 2:2 DSB complexes with barium cation in the ground and excited states. The orbital structures of the 2:2 complexes were calculated by ab initio method, and conclusions were drawn about the possibility of [2 + 2]- photocycloaddition reaction.

This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.

A novel metal-free, reusable, and green catalytic system comprising hydrothermal carbon microspheres (HCMSs) supporting N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) was developed and employed in the aerobic oxidation of alcohol. Hierarchically porous HCMSs with good monodispersity were produced by the hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose and designed NaOH-impregnated calcination under a static air atmosphere. The meso- and macroporous pores on HCMSs make up 71% of the total pore volume. The covalent immobilization of NHPI onto HCMSs was first accomplished by grafting hyperbranched polyquaternary amine via repetitive ring-opening reactions of diglycidyl ether and subsequent amidation with 4-carboxy-NHPI. Owing to the cocatalysis of grafted quaternary ammonium salt, a designed heterogeneous catalyst has superior performance to free NHPI in the oxidation of 2-phenylethanol. The established catalytic system achieved 42% conversion and up to 96% selectivity of acetophenone at 90 degrees C under 1 atm O-2 for 20 h and presented a versatile catalytic effect for diversified alcohols. Immobilized NHPI could be facilely recycled via simple filtration and displayed good stability for six cycles without a discernible decrease of reactivity or damage of catalyst morphology in repeated oxidation test.

ZnS and Cu:ZnS nanoparticles were prepared by aqueous chemical method and characterized by several analytical tools. In the present work, 117 N-phenylbenzamides (NPDs) were prepared and evaluated against recombinant AOX from the fungal pathogen Moniliophthora perniciosa. H-1, C-13 NMR, FTIR, and mass spectra provided structural information on NPDs. The library compounds were tested as Alternative Oxidase inhibitors in two different assays using the model yeast Pichia pastoris: cell growth and oxygen consumption assays. The most active compound, 3(FH), was further characterized by DRX and 1H-NMR-STD. Single crystal X-ray diffraction showed intra- and intermolecular interactions of 3(FH) in solid-state and elucidated its 3D structural configuration. 1H-NMR-STD allowed us to derive protein-ligand interactions in a membranemimetic system and evidenced an outstanding interaction of 3(FH) with this enzyme. Results of both biological assays were used as input to Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship models, which highlighted the more important molecular fragments contributions for protein-ligand interaction. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out using aqueous bark extract of Shorea robusta(Sal tree) as the reducing and capping agent. AgNPs were characterized using modern characterization tools like UV-Vis, PXRD, FT-IR, SEM, and HR-TEM. The catalytic application of the prepared AgNPs in three-component coupling reaction of aldehyde, malononitrile, and cyclic enamino ketone resulted in good to excellent yields of hexahydroquinoline derivatives. Moreover, the catalyst can be recycled up to 5 times without compromising too much yield. The mechanistic pathway was investigated employing GC-Mass spectroscopy and supported through the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. A two-step mechanism has been proposed for the coupling reaction, and the presence of electron-withdrawing group in the aldehyde component is found to be more favorable than electron-releasing one in terms of yield with lesser time.

Dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles are emerging as attractive nanocatalysts in recent years. However, they still suffer from the instability related activity attenuation. Herein, dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon shell (Au-Fe3O4@Carbon) as novel yolk@shell nanocatalysts were synthesized via template assisted method, with which the yolk@shell scaffolds and even the diameter of the hollow space is totally designable. The yolk@shell structured Au-Fe3O4@Carbon was demonstrated to exhibit high stability and enhanced activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Moreover, 100% yield was determined for the benzhydrol oxidation reaction taking advantage of the as prepared Au-Fe3O4@Carbon yolk@shell nanocatalysts. Furthermore, the Au-Fe3O4@Carbon nanocatalysts presented herein exhibit superior recyclability, which laid the foundation for its practical application. The mechanism for the enhanced catalytic behavior were clearly addressed. It is anticipated that the elaborate design of this work can lead to the exploration of novel nanocatalysts with superior catalytic performance.
