In the present study, ZnO modified with rare earth oxides GdxMn; M=Mo, V, W) were synthesized by hydrothermal process and their catalytic activity was tested in an oxidative cyclization reaction for the selective synthesis of quinazolinones. The catalysts were characterized by various techniques such as BET surface area analysis, XRD, SEM-EDX, DSC-TGA, ICP-MS and elemental color mapping. 5 wt% Gd2MoO6/ZnO exhibited good catalytic activity and gave 60-91% of Quinazolin-4(3H) ones in toluene. The catalysts could be reused at least four times without loss of catalytic activity.

This study reports an innovative pathway for successfully synthesizing composite panels using various waste input. For this purpose, seven types of powder from waste or widely available filler i.e. Quartz off-cut, sand, waste seashell, dolomite, limestone aggregates, concrete waste and limestone dust were used. The study aims to assess the effectiveness and mechanical properties of the various waste powder in the production of powder-resin composites. The panels were then compared with the novel polymeric glass composite (PGC) in the previous study (Heriyanto et al., 2018). Following the same procedure in PGC, the filler was individually grounded to 64-108 mu m and chemically treated with amino silane coupling agent (CA). The powder filler (untreated or treated) is then mixed with the resin binder with a ratio of 80/20 respectively, followed by hot pressing the mixture at the pressure of 550 bar at 65 degrees C for 1 h. The final composite slab is then further cut for mechanical testing. It was found in the study that when CA was not added, surface roughness of the powder particles affected the flexural strength of the final panel significantly. High surface roughness particles such as in Quartz, sand and seashell adhere effectively with the resin binder which led to higher strength. On the contrary, other factors like smooth particle morphology in glass, dolomite and limestone as well as porous structure in concrete and clump of very fine powder in limestone dust degrade the strength of the final panels. With CA addition, adhesion between resin and powder filler were improved significantly. Flexural strength after the CA treatment was found to be much affected by particle characteristics. Silica-based panels i.e. quartz, sand and glass which consist of high strength and hardness of silica particles perform better compared to that of calcium carbonate-based panels. Compression strength, toughness, stiffness, scratch resistance, density and water absorption were also reported in this study. The properties of all the treated panels are found to be comparable, or if not, much better than natural stones. These new approaches of using waste filler in powder – resin based composites can be a new alternative to produce green materials that deliver economic and environmental benefits. Chiral polyureas of cinchona alkaloids were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. Media coverage of disasters potentially damages mental health. Moreover, its effects may differ as recipients may have different emotional responses toward media. The present study examined whether social capital, known to be protective against mental problems, influences a recipient’s emotional response toward news media broadcasting of natural disasters via newspapers, television and internet in Japan. Three social capital components, social participation, social support and cognitive social capital, were considered in the present study as each component reportedly had different effect on mental health. This nationwide cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 2015 among 1,200 Japanese citizens aged 15 to 79 years who were selected using the multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected via the drop-off pick-up method using a printed structured questionnaire. Negative and positive emotions were classified based on recipients’ responses against news media. Among 1,190 participants who reported emotions toward news media, 30.9% (368) had experienced any natural disasters, 37.4% (445) belonged to at least one formal or informal organization (social participation), 40.2% (478) had high social support, and 68.8% (819) had high cognitive social capital. High social support was associated with both reduced negative emotional response (OR 0.66, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.47-0.93) and increased positive emotional response (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.04-2.12) in multivariate analyses, while high cognitive social capital was only associated with increased positive emotional response (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.11-2.37). These results suggest protective effects of social support and cognitive social capital against news media coverage of natural disasters.

A di(o-tolyl)borylgold complex was synthesized via the metathesis reaction of a gold alkoxide with tetra(o-tolyl)diborane(4). The resulting diarylborylgold complex exhibited a Lewis acidic boron center and a characteristic visible absorption that arises from its HOMO-LUMO excitation, which is narrower than that of a previously reported dioxyborylgold complex. The diarylborylgold complex reacted with isocyanide in a stepwise fashion to afford single- and double-insertion products and a C-C coupled product. Reactions of this diarylborylgold complex with C = O/N double bond species furnished addition products under concomitant formation of Au-C and B-O/N bonds, which suggests nucleophilic reactivity of the gold metal center. DFT calculations provided details of the underlying reaction mechanism, which involves an initial coordination of the C = O/N bond to the boron vacant p-orbital of the diarylboryl ligand followed by a migration of the gold atom from the tetracoordinate sp(3)-hybridized boron center, which is analogous to the reactivity of the conventional sp(3)-hybridized borate species. The DFT calculations also suggested a stepwise mechanism for the reaction of this diarylborylgold complex with isocyanide, which afforded three different reaction products depending on the applied reaction conditions.

Organic pollutants associated with diesel exhaust particles (DEP), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, may negatively impact human health. However, a comprehensive overview of their effects on endocrine nuclear receptor activities is still missing. Here, we evaluated the effects of extracts and chromatographic fractions (fractionated according to increasing polarity) of two standard reference materials derived from distinct types of diesel engines (SRM 2975, SRM 1650b), on activation of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma), glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and thyroid receptor alpha (TR alpha), using human cell-based reporter gene assays. Neither DEP standard modulated AR or GR activities. Crude extracts and fractions of SRM 1650b and SRM 2975 suppressed ER alpha-mediated activity in the ER-CALUX (TM) assay; however, this effect could be partly linked to their cytotoxicity in this cell line. We observed that only SRM 2975 extract and its fractions were partial PPAR gamma inducers, while SRM 1650b extract was not active towards this receptor. Importantly, we found that both extracts and polar fractions of SRM activated TR alpha and significantly potentiated the activity of endogenous TR alpha ligand, triiodothyronine. Based on a detailed chemical analysis of both extracts and their polar fractions, we identified several oxygenated PAH derivatives, that were present at relatively high levels in the analyzed DEP standards, including 3-nitrobenzanthrone (3-NBA), anthracene-9,10-dione, phenanthrene-9,10-dione. 9H-fluoren-9-one or benzo[a] anthracene-7,12-dione, to activate TR alpha activity. Nevertheless, these compounds provided only a minor contribution to the overall TR alpha activity identified in polar fractions. This suggests that yet unidentified polar polyaromatic compounds associated with DEP may, apart from their known impact on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor or steroid signaling, deregulate activities of additional nuclear receptors, in particular of TR alpha. During the past few decades, fabrication of functional rotaxane-branched dendrimers has become one of the most attractive yet challenging topics within supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the successful fabrication of a family of new rotaxane-branched dendrimers containing up to 21 platinum atoms and 42 photosensitizer moieties through an efficient and controllable divergent approach. Notably, the photosensitization efficiencies of these rotaxane-branched dendrimers gradually increased with the increase of dendrimer generation. For example, third-generation rotaxane-branched dendrimer PG3 revealed 13.3-fold higher O-1(2) generation efficiency than its corresponding monomer AN. The enhanced O-1(2) generation efficiency was attributed to the enhancement of intersystem crossing (ISC) through the simple and efficient incorporation of multiple heavy atoms and photosensitizer moieties on the axles and wheels of the rotaxane units, respectively, which has been validated by UV-visible and fluorescence techniques, time-dependent density functional theory calculations, photolysis model reactions, and apparent activation energy calculations. Therefore, we develop a new promising platform of rotaxane-branched dendrimers for the preparation of effective photosensitizers.

2, 3-Dihydroquinazolinones are of popular compounds with the diversification of biological and pharmacological activities. Among many discovered methods, there are efficient and convenient methods used for the synthesis of 2, 3-dihydroquinazoline-4 (1H)-one and some new bis 2, 3-dihydroquinazoline-4 (1H)-one derivatives which are reported in this study. The mentioned methods include the two-component condensation of one molecule of anthranilamide and one molecule of pyrazole carbaldehyde using montmorillonite-K 10 as a catalyst for the preparation of 2, 3 dihydroquinazoline-4 (1H)-ones. Also, one-pot pseudo-five-component reaction (5MCRs) of two molecules of isatoic anhydride, two molecules of pyrazole carbaldehydes and one molecule of ethan-1, 2-diamine in the presence of the r catalyst (montmorillonite-K10) for the synthesis of bis 2, 3-dihydroquinazoline-4 (1H)-ones. Despite the short times of reactions, high yields of products were obtained, which were validated using FT-IR, (HNMR)-H-1, (CNMR)-C-13, and elemental analysis. Moreover, the compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activities against two-gram-positive bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus Luteus; and against two-gram-negative bacterial strains, as well: Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which all were utilized for antibacterial investigations. The results showed moderate or significant antibacterial activities.

The abiotic photochemical reactions that take place naturally in sunlit surface waters can degrade many contaminants that pose concern to water bodies for their potentially toxic and long-term effects. This works aims at assessing the ability of European rivers to photoproduce reactive transient intermediates, such as HO center dot radicals and the excited triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter ((CDOM)-C-3*), involved in pollutant degradation. A photochemical mapping of the steady-state concentrations of these transients was carried out by means of a suitable modeling tool, in the latitude belt between 40 and 50 degrees N. Such a map allowed for the prediction of the photochemical lifetimes of the phenylurea herbicide isoproturon (mostly undergoing photodegradation upon reaction with HO center dot and especially (CDOM)-C-3*) across different European countries. Water soluble sodium 4-amino-5-hydroxy-7-sulfonaphthalene-2-sulfonate ligand was used successfully for the preparation of 1,2,3-triazoles pharmacophore linked-quinazolinone scaffold.
