Herein, we report a bioinspired catalytic system for the one-pot cascade oxidation of a native primary amine and an in situ generated non-native secondary amine. The catalyst consists of an o-quinone cofactor phd (1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) and a copper ion and operates under ambient air conditions. Quinazolin-4(3H)-ones, which are common pharmacophores present in numerous pharmaceuticals and bioactive compounds, were synthesized in high yields. A detailed kinetic and mechanistic study elucidates the role of the catalyst in the multi-step oxidative cascade reaction.

Low Magnetic field effects on a photoinduced electron transfer reaction between benzophenone and 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane (DABCO) in an ionic liquid of N,N,N-trimethyl-N-propylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide were studied with nanosecond transient absorption measurements. At a magnetic field (similar to 2 mT) comparable with the hyperfine coupling in DABCO cation, so-called low field effects (LFEs), whose effect is opposite to the magnetic field effects caused by the hyperfine coupling mechanism, were observed on the yield of the benzophenone anion radical. The magnitude of the LFE is linearly increased with the increase of the lifetime of the radical ion pair. The present study provides basic data to clarify the mechanism of LFEs in biological systems.

A practical and heterogeneously catalyzed Stille, homo-coupling, and Suzuki carbonylation reaction has been reported using Pd nanoparticles supported on amino-vinyl silica-functionalized magnetic carbon nanotube (CNT@Fe3O4@SiO2-Pd) for the efficient synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl ketones from aryl iodides. A wide variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl ketones were obtained in high yields under CO gas-free conditions using Mo(CO)(6) as an efficient carbonyl source. Considering the atom economy of Ph3SnCl, less than an equimolar amount can be applied in Stille transformation, which is of great importance due to the toxicity of organotin derivatives. Moreover, no phosphine ligand and external reducing agent were necessary in these coupling carbonylation reactions. This heterogeneous Pd catalyst offers high activity with very low palladium leaching. Finally, the catalyst can be reused and recycled for six steps without loss in activity, exhibiting good example of sustainable methodology. Graphic abstract

The oxidation of a series of alkylaromatic compounds with H2O2 catalyzed by an imine-based non-heme iron complex prepared in situ by reaction of 2-picolylaldehyde, 2-picolylamine, and Fe(OTf)(2) in a 2 : 2 : 1 ratio leads to a marked chemoselectivity for aromatic ring hydroxylation over side-chain oxidation. This selectivity is herein investigated in detail. Side-chain/ring oxygenated product ratio was found to increase upon decreasing the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the benzylic C-H bond in line with expectation. Evidence for competitive reactions leading either to aromatic hydroxylation via electrophilic aromatic substitution or side-chain oxidation via benzylic hydrogen atom abstraction, promoted by a metal-based oxidant, has been provided by kinetic isotope effect analysis.

A new magnetic nanocatalyst based on the immobilization of tungstic acid onto new design robust, cost-effective, green, and scalable zirconium-L-aspartate amino acid metal-organic framework (MOF)-grafted L-(+)-tartaric acid stabilized magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4/tart-NPs) was synthesized by two successive solvo (hydro)-thermal methods. This catalyst was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), zeta potential, Thermogravimetry Analysis-Differential Thermal Analysis (TGA-DTA), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analyses. This catalyst is outstanding to prepare l-(4-phenyl)-2,4-dihydropyrano[2,3-c] pyrazole derivatives in aqueous media due to the open metal sites, high and steady proton conductivity in the zirconium-MOF, MIP-202(Zr), and MOF and also due to Bronsted acid properties of tungstic acid. This acidic catalyst can easily be extracted by an outward magnetic field after completion of the reaction without any deactivation or selectivity loss. The products were characterized by spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR, H-1-NMR, and C-13-NMR). The optimized reaction conditions and a possible reaction mechanism are outlined.

We report here a C-H homoallylation reaction of aromatic ketones with methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) only using a catalytic amount of Fe(PMe3)(4). A variety of aromatic ketones and MCPs are applicable to the reaction to form ortho-homoallylated aromatic ketones selectively via regioselective scission of the three-membered rings. The homoallylated products are amenable to further elaborations, providing functionalized 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes.

4-Imidazol-1-yl-butane-1-sulfonic acid (ImBu-SO3H) has been successfully synthetized and fully characterized by FT-IR and high-resolution NMR spectroscopy (H-1, C-13). The plausible alternative structures of ImBu-SO3H were discussed on the basis of its NMR data. The ionic liquid showed interesting dual solvent-catalyst property, which was studied experimentally for the acetylation of a variety of functionalized alcohols, phenols, thiols, amines and a-tocopherol (a-CTP) as the most active form of vitamin E with acetic anhydride and which provided good yields within a short reaction time. ImBu-SO3H was successfully recycled by product extraction with an average recovered yield of 82% for 5 subsequent runs. The catalytic activity of the recycled ImBu-SO3H showed almost no loss even after five consecutive runs. [GRAPHICS] .

Higher-ordered structure motifs of nucleic acids, such as the G-quadruplex (G-4), mismatched and bulge structures, are significant research targets because these structures are involved in genetic control and diseases. Selective alkylation of these higher-order structures is challenging due to the chemical instability of the alkylating agent and side-reactions with the single- or double-strand DNA and RNA. We now report the reactive OFF-ON type alkylating agents, vinyl-quinazolinone (VQ) precursors with a sulfoxide, thiophenyl or thiomethyl group for the OFF-ON control of the vinyl reactivity. The stable VQ precursors conjugated with aminoacridine, which bind to the G-4 DNA, selectively reacted with a T base on the G-4 DNA in contrast to the single- and double-strand DNA. Additionally, the VQ precursor reacted with the T or U base in the AP-site, G-4 RNA and T-T mismatch structures. These VQ precursors would be a new candidate for the T or U specific alkylation in the higher-ordered structures of nucleic acids.

Synthesis of pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid was progressed via two different protocols, one of which is solid state. Pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid was converted into different derivatives such as ester, urea, amide and nitrile. The amide compound was converted to nitrile using SOCl2 and DMF. Solid state heating of carboxylic acid gave decarboxylated product. Cyclization of tetra-substituted pyrazole with hydrazines resulted in pyrazolopyridazinones. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized pyrazole derivatives against Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were evaluated. One of the pyrazole derivatives which possess nitro group showed antimicrobial activity in only B. cereus, a Gram-positive bacteria, with an MIC of 128 mu g/mL.

Two highly efficient metal-organic framework catalysts TJU-68-NHPI and TJU-68-NDHPI have been successfully synthesized through solvothermal reactions of which the frameworks are merged with N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) units, resulting in the decoration of pore surfaces with highly active nitroxyl catalytic sites. When t-butyl nitrite (TBN) is used as co-catalyst, the as-synthesized MOFs are demonstrated to be highly efficient and recyclable catalysts for a novel three-phase heterogeneous oxidation of activated C-H bond of primary and secondary alcohols, and benzyl compounds under mild conditions. Based on the high efficiency and selectivity, an environmentally benign system with good sustainability, mild conditions, simple work-up procedure has been established for practical oxidation of a wide range of substrates.
