It is well known that graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxides (RGO) are materials of today with immense application potentials. However, to realize the same large scale, reproducible, sustainable synthesis techniques such as greener methods which avoid utilization of toxic chemicals for synthesis, must be adopted. It is in this context, that here we report the reduction of GO to RGO by the extract of Thuja Orientalis (TO) seeds. As such, TO is a well-known bio-resource for medicinal and various other biotechnological applications as it contains Alpha Tocopherol, the major constituent of vitamin E. To the best of our knowledge, despite the wealth of literature, the current work makes a pioneering effort in applying TO seeds extract for reduction of GO to RGO. Thus, the reduction of GO, synthesized by the well-known modified Hummer?s method to RGO by TO extract, is confirmed from the results obtained by ultra-violet visible (UV?Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and especially, gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GCMS) techniques. Furthermore, the GCMS study is used to identify the compound Alpha Tocopherol responsible for reduction of GO to RGO. Based on current experimental evidences and literature views, the possible mechanism of reduction is suggested. Finally, the implications of present studies in the perspective of large scale, sustainable synthesis of RGO for various technological applications are discussed.

BACKGROUND Rectosigmoid endometriosis is an underdiagnosed disease responsible for abdominal pain, transit disorders and rectal bleeding. Two surgical approaches, rectosigmoid bowel resection (segmental or patch) or intramuscular layer dissection (shaving), are available. AIM To assess whether the lesion features observed via preoperative rectosigmoid endoscopic ultrasonography (RS-EUS) might predict the need for bowel resection. METHODS This multicentric retrospective study was conducted on patients with rectosigmoid endometriosis who underwent a curative surgical procedure, evaluated by RS-EUS performed by two trained operators, between January 2012 and March 2018. A univariate statistical analysis was performed on nodules’ RS-EUS features (thickness, width, infiltration of the submucosae, presence of a bump into the digestive lumen and presence of multiple rectosigmoid localizations). A multivariate logistic regression was then performed on the significant results. RESULTS Of the 367 patients, 73 patients with rectosigmoid endometriosis were evaluated by RS-EUS and underwent rectosigmoid surgery. After the univariate analysis was completed, thickness, width and infiltration of the submucosae were identified as potential predictive factors for bowel resection. In a multivariate logistic regression model, only thickness appeared to be a significant [odds ratio (OR) = 1.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-2.12, P = 0.028] predictive factor for bowel resection. Receiver operating characteristic analysis performed showed tha t a thickness over 5.20 ram might be used as cut-off with a sensitivity of 76%, a specificity of 81%, and an area under carve = 0.82. The cut-off values for 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity were 0.90 mm and 10.00 mm, respectively. A trend concerning width to predict the need for resection was also observed (OR 1.12, 95% CI: 1.00-1.26, P = 0.054) CONCLUSION The presence of a rectosigmoid nodule of endometriosis greater than 5.20 mm thick on RS-EUS might predict the need for bowel resection.

Objective: To assess the antidiabetic effect of Opuntia dillenii seed oil on rats with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A rat diabetes model was established by intraperitoneal injection of rats with 50 mg/kg streptozotocin. Thirty albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups: the diabetic control group and normal control group were treated only with distilled water, two diabetic groups received 1 and 2 mL/kg of oil per day, respectively, for 30 days and one diabetic group received 2 mg/kg of glibenclamide. In addition, blood glucose was determined weekly. Body weight, average daily food, water intake and urinary volume of each animal were determined before and after the treatment period. After the treatment period, hepatic glycogen was determined using the anthrone reagent, and glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid were estimated using common clinical diagnostic kits. Results: Oral intake of the oil at 1 and 2 mL/kg for the diabetic animals significantly diminished blood glucose, glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid, accompanied by a noticeable elevation in the amount of hepatic glycogen in comparison with the diabetic control group. Similarly, Opuntia dillenii seed oil significantly increased the food intake and decreased the urinary volume per day in treated rats of the same groups in comparison with the period before the treatment intervention and attenuated body weight loss in the diabetic rats. Moreover, this effect of the oil was dose dependent. On the other hand, the oil did not affect their need for water. Conclusions: The results show that Opuntia dillenii seed oil has a very important antidiabetic effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hence, we suggest it as a preventive control of diabetes mellitus.

A facile and diversity-oriented approach has been developed for the synthesis of pyrrole-, pyridine-, or azepine-appended (het)aryl aminoamides via the N-allylation/homoallylation-ring-closing metathesis (RCM) strategy. Microwave condition was efficiently utilized for N-allylation of (het)aryl aminoamides to synthesize di-, tri-, and tetra-allyl/homoallylated RCM substrates in good yields. All of the RCM substrates were successfully converted to respective pyrroles 6a-h, 13a,b, 15a,b, pyridines 11a-d, 13c, and azepines 7a,b via RCM. All of the five-, six-, and seven-membered N-heterocycles were synthesized in shorter reaction times with excellent yields without isomerization products. A one-pot reaction to synthesize compounds 6a and 6b without isolating corresponding RCM substrates was achieved successfully. The synthetic utility of the compound 6b has been demonstrated by synthesizing biaryl derivatives 17a,b under the microwave Suzuki coupling reaction condition.

The utilization of photochemical reaction channel based on radical process is rarely reported, which might be a very efficient and feasible strategy for improving generation of Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, a double ionic-type aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) of TIdBO was developed as a photosensitizer, of which the potential photocyclization characteristic involving an electron-transfer process had a positive effect on Type I ROS generation in aggregates under continuous light irradiation. Its noticeable photodynamic therapy (PDT) performance and self-monitoring of PDT process by the relationship between cellular morphology change and fluorescence intensity enhancement were achieved. In addition, it showed a good killing ability to microbes and specific interactions with microbes but not cells by regulating the incubation time. Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with abnormal inflammatory and coagulation markers, potentially mediating thrombotic events. Our objective was to investigate the incidence, time course, laboratory features, and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients with suspected venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who had undergone ultrasound imaging for suspected VTE from March 13 to May 18, 2020. The medical records of the included patients were reviewed for D-dimer, fibrinogen, prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, platelet count, C-reactive protein (CRP), and high-sensitivity troponin T at admission and at up to seven time points before and after ultrasound examination. The clinical outcomes included superficial venous thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, intubation, and death. Mixed effects logistic, linear, and Cox proportional hazards methods were used to evaluate the relationships between the laboratory markers and VTE and other in-hospital outcomes. Results: Of 138 patients who had undergone imaging studies, 44 (31.9%) had evidence of VTE. On univariable analysis, an elevated admission CRP (odds ratio [OR], 1.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.09; P = .02; per 10-U increase in CRP), platelet count (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.04-2.12; P = .03; per 1000-U increase in platelet count), and male sex (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.19-5.84; P = .02), were associated with VTE. However only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis (OR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.01-5.56; P = .048). The independent predictors of death included older age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00-1.07; P = .04), active malignancy (HR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.39-13.91; P = .01), elevated admission D-dimer (HR, 1.016; 95% CI, 1.003-1.029; P = .02), and evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (HR, 4.81; 95% CI, 1.76-13.10; P = .002). Conclusions: Male sex, elevated CRP, and elevated platelet count at admission were associated with VTE on univariable analysis. However, only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis. Older age, active malignancy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and elevated D-dimer at admission were independently associated with death for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Temperature-enhanced water selectivity of MMMs was demonstrated for the dehydration pervaporation of ethanol solutions. The MMMs synthesized from Polyvinyl alcohol embedded with Poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate)-grafted mesoporous silica nanoparticles revealed a concomitant increasing of the water selectivity and the water flux upon raising feed solution temperature from 30 degrees C to 60 degrees C. This phenomenon is rarely observed in PVA-based MMMs in which the water selectivity usually declines with increasing feed temperature. Remarkably, the temperature enhancing effect was intensified with increasing amount of the grafted PHEMA on MSNs. The enhancement of the water selectivity stems from the superior water absorption selectivity to the water diffusion selectivity because the water absorption by the MMMs is endothermic which gives rise to the favorable absorption as raising feed solution temperature. The incorporation of MSNs-g-PHEMA resulted in improving of both flux and the water selectivity because the mesoporous structure of MSNs-g-PHEMA provides unrestricted and hydrophilic paths for the water permeation.

The identification of new compounds is urgent to develop safe and efficacious candidates for leishmaniasis treatment, especially from natural products as a potential source of active molecules against neglected tropical parasite diseases. Inspired by the efficacious quinoline alkaloid microbial effects, we have previously reported the synthesis and biological activity of 2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylic acids and poly-substituted quinolines against parasites. In this work, a series of eighteen 2-styryl-4-quinolinecarboxylic acids were synthesized under microwave irradiation settings obtaining from good to excellent yields (60%-90%), shorter reaction times (2 minutes), and eco-friendly experimental conditions. All these products were evaluated against infective forms of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, such as promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes, based on cytotoxicity assays, including host macrophage infection assays. Compounds 4 and 5 possessing a 2-chloro or 4-chlorostyryl moiety, respectively, were considered the most promising antileishmanial agents due to the parasite killing effect in intracellular forms inside infected macrophages. Thus, our results revealed that the 2-styryl-4-quinolinecarboxylic acid backbone structure was essential for the activity against intracellular pathogens like L. (L.) amazonensis.
