In this work, the novel pistachio hull-OSO3H catalyst was synthesized via preparing pistachio hull as a support followed by treatment with chlorosulfonic acid (ClSO3H) and identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (EDX), Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The size of the pistachio hull-OSO3H nanocatalyst was shown by a scanning electron microscope below 100 nm. The catalytic activity of the solid acid catalyst has been successfully examined in a one-pot, three-component condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes, dimedone and kojic acid under solvent-free condition to furnish dihydropyrano [3,2-b] chromen dione derivatives. The proposed approach has some advantages as excellent yields, mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, use of agricultural waste and eco-friendly nature.

As microfluidic systems play important roles to advance chemical synthesis applications in pharmaceutical and life science fields, the demand for fully-automated chemical synthesis work cycles grows. A successful automation of chemical synthesis with high yields requires not only executing sequential steps of organic chemical reactions, but also simple and adaptive purification (i.e., workup) techniques in each step. Despite recent advances in microreactor technologies, seamlessly integrating reactions and work-up toward a fully-automated chemical synthesis platform is an unmet challenge. In this study, we have demonstrated an electrowetting-ondielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidic device (DMF) as an efficient in-line work-up tool for organic chemical synthesis reactions. The model protocol performed on EWOD DMF involves an acid-base workup, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), and in-line solvent-swap. Device operation parameters of each reactant and unit process have been optimized. This study manifests the capacity of an EWOD device to transform into a drug discovery platform, particularly by hosting synthetically important reactions that require complicated work-up sequences.

Background: Aloe vera is commonly used in the primary health care of human beings since time immemorial. It is an herb widely used in various traditional systems of medicine worldwide. Systematic and scientific investigation on A. vera as a medicinal plant has drawn considerable attention, and many laboratories are involved in isolation, characterization and evaluation of phytoconstituents for their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the phytochemical, biological and medicinal attributes of A. vera against various diseases with special emphasis on underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: PubMed, EBOSCO host, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane library databases were utilized to search literature published between1977 and 2019 (fill March). Major keywords used in various combinations included: Aloe vera, phytochemistry, metabolism, pharmacological activity, prevention, treatment, health, disease, in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies. Results: Various biological and pharmacological activities of A. vera, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and skin-protective and wound-healing responses, have been attributed to the presence of many active compounds, including anthraquinones, anthrones, chromones, flavonoids, amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Conclusion: Based on various preclinical studies, A. vera constituents have enormous potential to prevent and treat various diseases. Randomized clinical trials are needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of this unique medicinal plant.

Herein, an interesting palladium-catalyzed procedure for the direct carbonylative thiomethylation of aromatic amine derivatives with 4-methylthio-2-butanone is developed. Using 4-methylthio-2-butanone as (methylthio) transfer agent, a variety of corresponding thioesters are obtained with moderate to good yields under base-free condition. In addition, good functional group tolerance can be observed.

The tricyclic aromatic ketone 9-anthrone and its derivatives are under basic conditions in equilibrium with their corresponding anionic forms. Unlike the neutral species, the 9-anthrolate anions can be excited by blue LED light and thus, are able to initiate a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reaction. To demonstrate the synthetic applicability of the catalytic system, various (hetero)aryl chlorides were converted in C-C and C-Het bond-forming reactions affording the corresponding arylation products in moderate to excellent yields. The reactions proceed under very mild conditions without the need for a sacrificial electron donor. Besides 9-anthrone, other closely related derivatives were synthesised and investigated concerning their ability to catalyse demanding reductive transformations. Based on spectroscopic findings and radical trapping experiments a conceivable mechanism is proposed.

Objective: To explore the relationship between meteorological factors and scarlet fever incidence from 2006 to 2017 in Guangzhou, the largest subtropical city of Southern China, and assist public health prevention and control measures. Methods: Data for weekly scarlet fever incidence and meteorological variables from 2006 to 2017 in Guangzhou were collected from the National Notifiable Disease Report System (NNDRS) and the Guangzhou Meteorological Bureau (GZMB). Distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNMs) were conducted to estimate the effect of meteorological factors on weekly scarlet fever incidence in Guangzhou. Results: We observed nonlinear effects of temperature, relative humidity, and wind velocity. The risk was the highest when the weekly mean temperature was 31 degrees C during lag week 14, yielding a relative risk (RR) of 1.48 (95% CI: 1.01-2.17). When relative humidity was 43.5% during lag week 0, the RR was 1.49 (95% CI: 1.04-2.12); the highest RR (1.55, 95% CI: 1.20-1.99) was reached when relative humidity was 93.5% during lag week 20. When wind velocity was 4.4 m/s during lag week 13, the RR was highest at 3.41 (95% CI: 1.57-7.44). Positive correlations were observed among weekly temperature ranges and atmospheric pressure with scarlet fever incidence, while a negative correlation was detected with aggregate rainfall. The cumulative extreme effect of meteorological variables on scarlet fever incidence was statistically significant, except for the high effect of wind velocity. Conclusion: Weekly mean temperature, relative humidity, and wind velocity had double-trough effects on scarlet fever incidence; high weekly temperature range, high atmospheric pressure, and low aggregate rain fall were risk factors for scarlet fever morbidity. Our findings provided preliminary, but fundamental, information that may be useful for a better understanding of epidemic trends of scarlet fever and for developing an early warning system. A wide range of commercially available aldehydes have been applied to Knoevenagel condensation reaction to give E-alkenylphosphine oxides and vinylphosphine oxides. The readily available phosphinoylacetic acids derived from P(O)-H compounds were used as the starting materials in the reaction, providing a highly stereoselective and efficient method for constructing alpha,beta-unsaturated phosphine oxides. Moreover, this simple and practical procedure provides an alternative and more environmentally friendly synthesis strategy for this type of P-functionalized alkenyl compounds.

During the past few decades, fabrication of functional rotaxane-branched dendrimers has become one of the most attractive yet challenging topics within supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the successful fabrication of a family of new rotaxane-branched dendrimers containing up to 21 platinum atoms and 42 photosensitizer moieties through an efficient and controllable divergent approach. Notably, the photosensitization efficiencies of these rotaxane-branched dendrimers gradually increased with the increase of dendrimer generation. For example, third-generation rotaxane-branched dendrimer PG3 revealed 13.3-fold higher O-1(2) generation efficiency than its corresponding monomer AN. The enhanced O-1(2) generation efficiency was attributed to the enhancement of intersystem crossing (ISC) through the simple and efficient incorporation of multiple heavy atoms and photosensitizer moieties on the axles and wheels of the rotaxane units, respectively, which has been validated by UV-visible and fluorescence techniques, time-dependent density functional theory calculations, photolysis model reactions, and apparent activation energy calculations. Therefore, we develop a new promising platform of rotaxane-branched dendrimers for the preparation of effective photosensitizers.

Dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles are emerging as attractive nanocatalysts in recent years. However, they still suffer from the instability related activity attenuation. Herein, dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon shell (Au-Fe3O4@Carbon) as novel yolk@shell nanocatalysts were synthesized via template assisted method, with which the yolk@shell scaffolds and even the diameter of the hollow space is totally designable. The yolk@shell structured Au-Fe3O4@Carbon was demonstrated to exhibit high stability and enhanced activity towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Moreover, 100% yield was determined for the benzhydrol oxidation reaction taking advantage of the as prepared Au-Fe3O4@Carbon yolk@shell nanocatalysts. Furthermore, the Au-Fe3O4@Carbon nanocatalysts presented herein exhibit superior recyclability, which laid the foundation for its practical application. The mechanism for the enhanced catalytic behavior were clearly addressed. It is anticipated that the elaborate design of this work can lead to the exploration of novel nanocatalysts with superior catalytic performance.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out using aqueous bark extract of Shorea robusta(Sal tree) as the reducing and capping agent. AgNPs were characterized using modern characterization tools like UV-Vis, PXRD, FT-IR, SEM, and HR-TEM. The catalytic application of the prepared AgNPs in three-component coupling reaction of aldehyde, malononitrile, and cyclic enamino ketone resulted in good to excellent yields of hexahydroquinoline derivatives. Moreover, the catalyst can be recycled up to 5 times without compromising too much yield. The mechanistic pathway was investigated employing GC-Mass spectroscopy and supported through the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. A two-step mechanism has been proposed for the coupling reaction, and the presence of electron-withdrawing group in the aldehyde component is found to be more favorable than electron-releasing one in terms of yield with lesser time.
