A three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sodium metabisulfite, and 3-azido-2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol under mild conditions is described. By using abundant and cheap sodium metabisulfite as the sulfur dioxide surrogate, this protocol features good functional group compatibility, affording 2-arylsulfonylacetonitriles in moderate to good yields. The reaction proceeds smoothly at room temperature without the need of any catalysts or additives. Moreover, the synthetic utility of this method is demonstrated by the transformation of 2-arylsulfonylacetonitrile into 2-arylsulfonyl acetamide and 2-arylsulfonylethylamine.

A novel emulsified photoinitiator (named as OP10-IPDI-2959) was prepared by the reaction of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) with 2-hydroxy-4?-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-methylpropiophenone (Ir-2959) and nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (OP-10). The structure of OP10-IPDI-2959 was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, UV?vis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The photochemical behavior of OP10-IPDI-2959 was investigated through the photolysis and polymerization of neopentyl glycol diacrylate (NPGDA), mixture of epoxy acrylate resin and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA). Under irradiation of UV light, the OP10-IPDI-2959 has similar photochemical properties with the Ir-2959. Combined with benzophenone, the photoinitiated rate of OP10-IPDI-2959 is higher than that of Ir-2959. The polyoxyethylene fragment of OP10-IPDI-2959 is not only an alternative to toxic amine as hydrogen donor, but also a hydrophilic unit for interface between oil and water. The OP10-IPDI-2959 can effectively emulsify the epoxy acrylate resin and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate mixture to form low viscosity emulsion. Compared with Ir-2959, OP10-IPDI-2959 has good photoinitiation activity, lower migration and good water emulsification performance.

Solvent free synthesis of dihydropyrano[3,2-b]chromenediones was formulated via multicomponent reactions of kojic acid, dimedone and several substituted aromatic aldehydes catalyzed with BCl3. Reactions progressed efficiently and the corresponding heterocyclic products were obtained in good to high yields within short period. The developed protocol is one of the better and efficient alternative methods for the synthesis of dihydropyrano[3,2-b]chromenediones. The simple reaction procedure, easy separation of products, radially available catalyst are certain benefits of this reported protocol.

A simple protocol to overcome the explosive pentafluoroethylation of carbonyl compounds by HFC-125 is described. The use of potassium (K) bases with triglyme or tetraglyme as a solvent safely yields the pentafluoroethylation products in good to high yields. The experimental results suggest that an encapsulation of the K cation by glymes as K(glyme)(2) inhibits the contact between the K cation and the reactive anionic pentafluoroethyl counterion, preventing their transformation into KF and explosive tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). The generation of sterically demanding [K(G3)(2)](+) and [K(G4)(2)](+) is an effective way as an unstable pentafluoroethyl anion reservoir.

Using green chemical method a series of fifteen systematically substituted 3-(9-substituted anthracen-10-yl)-1-(4-phenyl substituted)prop-2-en-1-one derivatives having high nonlinear absorption coefficient have been synthesized. The nonlinear absorption properties of these compounds were studied using nanosecond pulses at 532 nm wavelength. All 15 derivatives are found to show high nonlinear absorption in the range of 35-640 cm/GW. Among these the derivatives with-NO2 as one of the substitution group show higher nonlinear absorption. The origin of high nonlinear absorption with low linear absorption in the compounds has been attributed to two-step two-photon absorption process. We have shown that the energy bands of these compounds are distributed such that for excitation at 532 nm they have strong nonlinear absorption. These properties of the reported compounds make them a potential candidate for biological imaging and other applications which are based on nonlinear absorption. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. A new aromatic diamine, 10,10-bis [4-(4-amino-2-pyridinoxy)phenyl]-9(10H)-anthracenone (BAPPA) was synthesized from anthrone as the starting material, and the corresponding pyridine- and anthrone-containing poly(ether amide)s (PEAs) were prepared from BAPPA with various aromatic diacid chlorides via a low-temperature solution polycondensation. The resulting PEAs having number-average molecular weights (M-n) of 29,500-33,400 g/mol with the polydispersity index ranged from 1.75 to 1.84, were all amorphous, and displayed excellent thermal stability with the glass transition temperatures of 263-355 degrees C, the temperatures of 415-441 degrees C at 5% weight loss and the higher than 50% residues at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. These new PEAs were soluble in polar solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide and pyridine, even almost in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature and could form transparent, strong and flexible films with tensile strengths of 84-97 MPa, tensile moduli of 2.1-3.2 GPa and elongations at break of 4-13%. Also, the present PEAs exhibited high optical transparence with the UV cutoff wavelength in the 342-362 nm range, and 83-90% transmittance at 500 nm. These results indicated the introduction of anthrone and pyridine groups into the backbone could improve the solubility and transparence of polyamides.

An efficient and convenient procedure for the synthesis of novel 6-hydroxy-14aryl-8H-dibenzo[a,i]xanthene-8,13(14-H)-dione derivatives has been developed by one-pot, three-component condensation reaction between 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione, aromatic aldehydes and 2,3-naphthalenediol in glacial acetic acid under reflux conditions. This domino reaction implies Knoevenagel condensation, Michael addition, intramolecular cyclization and dehydration. The reaction avoids tedious workup procedure due to the direct precipitation of products from the reaction medium. The notable features of this domino transformation are operational simplicity, clean reaction, easy handling, easy purification process and high yields of the products.

Solid base is a kind of important heterogeneous catalyst for the transformation of various chemicals. Although many different novel solid bases have reported, it is a still challenging process to generate strong basic site on many functional supports due to the high temperature treatment of strong base preparation. In this paper, the strong basic site was successfully generated on hypercrosslinked porous polymers (HCPs) via a reducing group strategy. With the reducing groups on HCPs, the decomposition temperature of base precursor KNO3 could be as low as 320 degrees C. Further investigation illustrated the reducing groups participated in the KNO3 decomposition through a redox strategy. The obtained solid base catalysts showed good oxidation capacity of methylene compounds.

Diphenylamine reacts with benzophenone in the solid state through the formation of a eutectic liquid intermediate, from which the final product, in the form of a hydrogen-bonded cocrystal, is finally formed. By a simple experiment, the phase diagram of the benzophenone/diphenylamine system is effectively divided into two parts, which enabled monitoring of the overall process from the side of each reactant separately. Accompanied by isothermal and nonisothermal spectroscopic monitoring of the system, this provides additional details of the mechanistic pathway of the process of cocrystal formation through a metastable liquid intermediate phase.
