Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be rationally designed with desired physicochemical properties for a far-ranging application in catalytic systems. Herein, a biguanide-functionalized covalent organic framework was designed and prepared via N-alkylation reaction, exhibiting a granular aggregate structure with high specific surface area. The biguanide-decorated DG-COF can be used as a highly efficient basic catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation and Knoevenagel-Michael-cyclocondensation reaction. The present methodology is of excellent yields, short reaction times and simple operational procedure. DG-COF catalytic performance does not change after eight-times regeneration.

A novel dioxomolybdenum Schiff base complex, MoO2L center dot DMF, was synthesized by treating MoO2(acac)(2) with an ONO donor Schiff base ligand (H2L) derived by the condensation of 4-aminobenzohydrazide and 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde. The synthesized ligand and complex were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Single-crystal X-ray analysis was also accomplished to ensure the molecular structure of the complex. The geometry around the central metal atom in MoO2L center dot DMF was distorted octahedral as revealed by the data collected from diffraction studies. Theoretical calculations of the synthesized compounds were carried out by DFT at B3LYP/Def2-TZVP level of theory, which showed a good correlation with the experimental findings. Moreover, the homogeneous catalytic efficiency of the complex was investigated by the process of selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols using urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) in acetonitrile under reflux conditions.

A convenient and eco-friendly, one-pot synthetic protocol for pharmaceutically important pyran-based heterocyclic compounds is repeated herein. The reactions were carried out at room temperature in a water-ethanol solvent mixture under direct irradiation of UV365 light source in the absence of photocatalyst. The merits of the present protocol include mild and catalyst-free reactions, green procedures, and high yields. The added advantage of this protocol is that it can be applied for large-scale synthesis of various pyran-based heterocyclic compounds without employing any expensive catalyst. Also, in vitro antibacterial screening of pyran derivative was investigated against both Gram-positive Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli).

The number of documented dengue cases has increased dramatically in recent years due to transmission through theAedes aegyptimosquito bite. Vector control remains the most effective measure to protect against this and other arboviral diseases including Zika, chikungunya and (urban) yellow fever, with an established vaccine only available for yellow fever. Although the quinone class shows potential as leading compounds for larvicide development, limited information restricts the development of optimized structures and/or formulations. Thus, in this contribution we investigated the larvicidal and pupicidal activity of three quinone compounds isolated from aConnarus suberosusroot wood ethyl acetate extract together with 28 quinones from other sources. Eight quinones demonstrated larvicidal activity, of which tectoquinone (4) proved to be the most active (LC(50)1.1 mu g/mL). The essential residual effect parameter of four of these quinones was evaluated in laboratory trials, with tectoquinone (4) and 2-ethylanthraquinone (7) presenting the most prolonged activity. In small-scale field residual tests, tectoquinone (4) caused 100% larvae mortality over 5 days, supporting its selection for formulation trials to develop a prototype larvicide to controlAe. aegypti.

Background Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy-specific syndrome with incompletely understood pathogenesis. Previous study has demonstrated that the decreased CXCR2 in preeclamptic placentas may contribute to the development of preeclampsia. The role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CXCR2 gene in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia remains largely unexplored. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between polymorphisms of CXCR2 gene and preeclampsia in Han Chinese women. Methods Totally 481 pregnant women, including 243 controls and 238 patients with preeclampsia were recruited. The rs1126579 and rs2230054 polymorphisms in CXCR2 gene were tested using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results Significantly increased risk of preeclampsia was observed in the rs1126579 CC or TC/CC genotypes when compared with TT genotype (CC vs. TT: odss ratio [OR] = 2.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.18-3.76, p = 0.039; TC/CC vs. TT: OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.29-2.78, p = 0.001). Markedly higher risk of preeclampsia was found to be associated with rs1126579 TC genotype (TC vs. TT/CC: OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, p = 0.031). After stratification analysis, the different distribution of TC/CC genotypes was particularly significant in the severe preeclampsia group (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.42-3.24, p < 0.01), the early-onset severe preeclampsia group (OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.14-3.42, p = 0.013), and the late-onset severe preeclampsia group (OR = 2.29, 95% CI = 1.39-3.78, p < 0.01). Besides, TC genotype carriers had a 1.55 fold increased risk of severe preeclampsia (95% CI = 1.06-2.27, p = 0.022) and a 1.80 fold increased risk of late onset severe preeclampsia (95% CI = 1.14-2.83, p = 0.01) than those of TT/CC genotype carriers. Conclusions Our study suggests a genetic association between rs1126579 polymorphism in CXCR2 gene and increased risk of preeclampsia. These data provide a new clue for future investigation. We report a visible-light-mediated benzylic C-H oxygenation reaction. The reaction is initiated by solar light or the blue LED activation of 9,10-dibromoanthracene in a reaction with oxygen and takes place at ambient temperature and air pressure. Secondary benzylic positions are oxygenated to ketones, while tertiary benzylic carbons are oxygenated to give hydroperoxides. Notably, cumene hydroperoxide is produced in a higher yield and at milder conditions than the currently employed industrial conditions.

Trace chemicals are common in marine and freshwater ecosystems globally. It is recognized that in the environment, individual chemicals are rarely found in isolation. Insufficient work has examined which chemicals co-occur and which methods best identify these mixtures. Using an existing data set, we found evidence that simple correlation analysis is better at identifying mixtures of commonly co-occurring trace chemicals than more commonly used PCA methods. Moreover, simple correlation analysis, unlike PCA, can be used in cases with unbalanced designs and with data points below reportable limits. Application of this approach allowed identification of 10 groups of chemicals commonly found together in freshwaters of the continental US, representing common chemical syndromes. Better identification of co-occurring chemical combinations could aid in our understanding of biological and ecological effects of aquatic contaminants. This research provides evidence of correlation analyses as a more effective method for identifying commonly co-occurring aquatic contaminants. We also examined the patterns of these mixtures with a dataset consisting of concentrations of 406 trace chemicals from 38 sample locations across the continental US. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Recent studies have raised concerns about e-cigarette liquid inhalation toxicity by reporting the presence of chemicals with European Union CLP toxicity classification. In this scenario, the regulatory context is still developing and is not yet up to date with vaping current reality. Due to the paucity of toxicological studies, robust data regarding which components in e-liquids exhibit potential toxicities, are still inconsistent. In this study we applied computational methods for estimating the toxicity of poorly studied chemicals as a useful tool for predicting the acute toxicity of chemicals contained in e-liquids. The purpose of this study was 3-fold: (a) to provide a lower tier assessment of the potential health concerns associated with e-liquid ingredients, (b) to prioritize e-liquid ingredients by calculating the e-tox index, and (c) to estimate acute toxicity of e-liquid mixtures. QSAR models were generated using QSARINS software to fill the acute toxicity data gap of 264 e-liquid ingredients. As a second step, the potential acute toxicity of e-liquids mixtures was evaluated. Our preliminary data suggest that a computational approach may serve as a roadmap to enable regulatory bodies to better regulate e-liquid composition and to contribute to consumer health protection.
