Diphenylamine reacts with benzophenone in the solid state through the formation of a eutectic liquid intermediate, from which the final product, in the form of a hydrogen-bonded cocrystal, is finally formed. By a simple experiment, the phase diagram of the benzophenone/diphenylamine system is effectively divided into two parts, which enabled monitoring of the overall process from the side of each reactant separately. Accompanied by isothermal and nonisothermal spectroscopic monitoring of the system, this provides additional details of the mechanistic pathway of the process of cocrystal formation through a metastable liquid intermediate phase.

Background Many natural compounds have been identified and synthesized by the advancement of bryophytes phytochemistry studies. This work aimed to report the composition of Neckeropsis undulata (Hedw.) Reichardt moss volatiles, sampled in the Combu Island, Belem city, Para state, Brazil. The volatile concentrate of N. undulata was obtained by a simultaneous distillation-extraction micro-system, analyzed by GC and GC-MS, and reported for the first time. Results Ten compounds were identified in the volatile concentrate, corresponding to 91.6% of the total, being 1-octen-3-ol (35.7%), alpha-muurolol (21.4%), naphthalene (11.3%), and n-hexanal (10.0 %) the main constituents. Most of the constituents of the N. undulata volatile concentrate have been previously identified in other mosses, and liverworts spread wide in the world. Conclusions 1-Octen-3-ol, n-hexanal, 2-ethylhexanol, isoamyl propionate, and octan-3-one are already known metabolic products obtained from enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, belonging to the large family of minor oxygenated compounds known as oxylipins. The knowledge of the composition of volatiles from moss N. undulata could contribute to the Neckeraceae species’ chemotaxonomy.

Rationale Mummification is one of the defining customs of ancient Egypt. The nuances of the embalming procedure and the composition of the embalming mixtures have attracted the attention of scientists and laypeople for a long time. Modern analytical tools make mummy studies more efficient. Methods Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (GCxGC/HRMS) with complementary ionization methods (electron ionization, positive chemical ionization, and electron capture negative ionization [ECNI]) with a Pegasus GC-HRT+4D instrument was used to identify embalming components in the mummy from the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts acquired in 1913 in London at the de Rustafjaell sale. The mummy dates back to the late Predynastic period (direct accelerator mass spectrometry-dating 3356-3098 bc), being one of the oldest in the world. Results The results showed the complexity of the embalming mixtures that were already in use 5000 years ago. Several hundred organic compounds were identified in the mummy samples. Various types of hydrocarbons (triterpanes, steranes, isoprenoid, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) prove the presence of petroleum products. Iodinated compounds detected using ECNI define oils of marine origin, whereas esters of palmitic acid indicate the use of beeswax. The nature of the discovered components of conifer tar proves that the preliminary processing of conifer resins involved heating. GCxGC/HRMS also allowed a number of modern contaminants (phthalates, organophosphates, and even DDT) to be identified. Conclusions Application of a powerful GCxGC/HRMS technique with complementary ionization methods allowed significant widening of the range of organic compounds used for mummification that could be identified. The complexity of the embalming mixtures supports the hypothesis of the high social status of the child made on the basis of the preliminary study of the mummy.

The synthesis of benzoborole dianions by alkali metal reduction of BN-naphthalene derivatives via a ring-contraction strategy has been developed. Reduction of 1-alkynyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 a in Et2O led to the elimination of alkynyllithium with the formation of 1-amino-1-benzoborole trilithium salt 2 a, whereas reduction of 1-phenyl 2,1-benzazaborine 1 c in THF yielded 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with the elimination of ArNHLi. The trilithium and dilithium salts 2 a and 2 c have been fully characterized. Treatment of trilithium salt 2 a with Et3NHCl led to the selective protonation of the amino lithium to afford the dilithium salt 2 aH, which could be cleanly oxidized to 1-amino-1-benzoborole 3 in an excellent yield. Reaction of 1-phenyl-1-benzoborole dilithium salt 2 c with MeI yielded the lithium borate 4 c, which is luminescent both in solution and in the solid state.

Cinchona-based chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) were designed and successfully synthesized via the Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. AB(2) and A(2)B-type chiral monomers were prepared from cinchona squaramide derivatives, where A (vinyl) reacted only with B (iodophenyl) under MH reaction conditions. The chiral HBPs obtained by the MH polymerization contained cinchona squaramide moieties and demonstrated excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric Michael addition reactions of methyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. Noble-metal-free photocatalysts with high and stable performance provide an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient route for green organic synthesis. In this work, CdS nanoparticles with small particle size and different amount were successfully deposited on the surface of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The deposition of suitable content of CdS on COFs could not only modify the light adsorption ability and the intrinsic electronic properties, but also enhance the photocatalytic activity and cycling performance of CdS for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols under visible light. Especially, COF/CdS-3 exhibited the highest yield (97.1%) of benzaldehyde which is approximately 2.5 and 15.9 times as that of parental CdS and COF, respectively. The results show that the combination of CdS and COF can improve the utilization of visible light and the separation of photo-generated charge carriers, and COF with the pi-conjugated system as supports for CdS nanoparticles could provide efficient electron transport channels and improve the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, this kind of COF-supported photocatalysts with accelerated photo-induced electrons and charge-carrier separation between semiconductors possesses great potentials in future green organic synthesis. BACKGROUND Ara h 1 is a major food allergen in peanuts. Recently, many studies have revealed that the Maillard reaction (MR) affects the allergenicity of food proteins. RESULTS To investigate the influence of the MR on the allergenicity of Ara h 1, R-Ara h 1 was processed with glucose in dry heating conditions for different periods. The extent of the MR was assessed by four methods. The changes in secondary and tertiary structures were characterized through spectroscopy assays. Advanced glycation end products (AGE) structures were identified by protein sample dry heating for 60 min, indicating the formation of AGE-Ara h 1. Simulated gastric fluid (SGF) digestion analysis showed that AGE-Ara h 1 has higher resistance to peptic digestion than R-Ara h 1. The BALB/c mouse model was also utilized to explore the effect of the MR on the allergenicity of Ara h 1, and the results showed that the Th2-type cytokines, antibodies, and histamine content increased, and there was a greater degree of degranulation of rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells in the AGE-Ara h 1 group compared with the R-Ara h 1 group. CONCLUSION During the process of dry heating, proteins participated in the MR with changes in secondary and tertiary structures. The condition applying a temperature of 100 degrees C for 60 min caused the formation of AGE-Ara h 1. Simulated gastric fluid digestion analysis showed that AGE-Ara h 1 had a greater resistance to peptic digestion than R-Ara h 1. The BALB/c mouse model showed that AGE-Ara h 1 had more allergenicity, indicating that the MR could enhance the allergenicity of Ara h 1. (c) 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

The azetidine moiety is a privileged motif in medicinal chemistry and new methods that access them efficiently are highly sought after. Towards this goal, we have found that azabicyclo[1.1.0]butyl carbinols, readily obtained from the highly strained azabicyclo[1.1.0]butane (ABB), can undergo divergent strain-release reactions upon N-activation. Treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride or triflic anhydride triggered a semipinacol rearrangement to give keto 1,3,3-substituted azetidines. More than 20 examples were explored, enabling us to evaluate selectivity and the migratory aptitude of different groups. Alternatively, treatment of the same alcohols with benzyl chloroformate in the presence of NaI led to iodohydrin intermediates which gave spiroepoxy azetidines upon treatment with base. The electronic nature of the activating agent dictates which pathway operates.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) disease is a global rapidly spreading virus showing very high rates of complications and mortality. Till now, there is no effective specific treatment for the disease. Aloe is a rich source of isolated phytoconstituents that have an enormous range of biological activities. Since there are no available experimental techniques to examine these compounds for antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, we employed an in silico approach involving molecular docking, dynamics simulation, and binding free energy calculation using SARS-CoV-2 essential proteins as main protease and spike protein to identify lead compounds from Aloe that may help in novel drug discovery. Results retrieved from docking and molecular dynamics simulation suggested a number of promising inhibitors from Aloe. Root mean square deviation (RMSD) and root mean square fluctuation (RMSF) calculations indicated that compounds 132, 134, and 159 were the best scoring compounds against main protease, while compounds 115, 120, and 131 were the best scoring ones against spike glycoprotein. Compounds 120 and 131 were able to achieve significant stability and binding free energies during molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, the highest scoring compounds were investigated for their pharmacokinetic properties and drug-likeness. The Aloe compounds are promising active phytoconstituents for drug development for SARS-CoV-2.
