Examined here are the structures of complexes of benzophenone microsolvated with up to three water molecules by using broadband rotational spectroscopy and the cold conditions of a molecular jet. The analysis shows that the water molecules dock sideways on benzophenone for the water monomer and dimer moieties, and they move above one of the aromatic rings when the water cluster grows to the trimer. The rotational spectra shows that the water trimer moiety in the complex adopts an open-loop arrangement. Ab initio calculations face a dilemma of identifying the global minimum between the open loop and the closed loop, which is only solved when zero-point vibrational energy correction is applied. An OH…pi bond and a Burgi-Dunitz interaction between benzophenone and the water trimer are present in the cluster. This work shows the subtle balance between water-water and water-solute interactions when the solute molecule offers several different anchor sites for water molecules.

Rationale Mummification is one of the defining customs of ancient Egypt. The nuances of the embalming procedure and the composition of the embalming mixtures have attracted the attention of scientists and laypeople for a long time. Modern analytical tools make mummy studies more efficient. Methods Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (GCxGC/HRMS) with complementary ionization methods (electron ionization, positive chemical ionization, and electron capture negative ionization [ECNI]) with a Pegasus GC-HRT+4D instrument was used to identify embalming components in the mummy from the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts acquired in 1913 in London at the de Rustafjaell sale. The mummy dates back to the late Predynastic period (direct accelerator mass spectrometry-dating 3356-3098 bc), being one of the oldest in the world. Results The results showed the complexity of the embalming mixtures that were already in use 5000 years ago. Several hundred organic compounds were identified in the mummy samples. Various types of hydrocarbons (triterpanes, steranes, isoprenoid, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) prove the presence of petroleum products. Iodinated compounds detected using ECNI define oils of marine origin, whereas esters of palmitic acid indicate the use of beeswax. The nature of the discovered components of conifer tar proves that the preliminary processing of conifer resins involved heating. GCxGC/HRMS also allowed a number of modern contaminants (phthalates, organophosphates, and even DDT) to be identified. Conclusions Application of a powerful GCxGC/HRMS technique with complementary ionization methods allowed significant widening of the range of organic compounds used for mummification that could be identified. The complexity of the embalming mixtures supports the hypothesis of the high social status of the child made on the basis of the preliminary study of the mummy.

Rubrene is the most widely used triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) emitter for NIR-to-vis photon upconversion (UC), however, strong singlet fission (SF) in the solid films quenches its emission and hampers practical TTA-UC applications. Herein, the issue was addressed by decorating the rubrene with sterically demanding 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl side-moieties at the periphery and the core to result in 40-fold enhancement of the emission quantum yield. Nevertheless, the sterically crowded rubrenes were found to exhibit lower sensitized UC performance compared to the conventional rubrene, which was ascribed to inefficient triplet energy transfer from a sensitizer and poor TTA (for the core-modified rubrene only). By exploiting the distinct feature of rubrenes to simultaneously express both SF and TTA in the solid films, their TTA efficiency was assessed independently from TET in the sensitizer-free films. The results implied a trade-off between suppressed SF and enhanced TTA in the rubrene emitters, which could be addressed via careful selection of the degree of sterical hindrance and linking position of the side-moieties. Thorough analysis of the prompt and delayed fluorescence revealed that the bulky side-moieties at the periphery do not impede TTA, i.e., it is as efficient as that of unsubstituted rubrene, whereas these moieties linked directly to the core suppress TTA dramatically. The current study unveils an advantage of the peripheral linking vs. core linking pattern of rubrene emitters, thereby providing valuable insights for their rational modification towards improved NIR-to-vis UC efficiency in the solid state.

Background Accurate sentinel lymph node (SLN) staging is essential for both prognosis and treatment in patients with breast cancer. However, the preoperative lymphoscintigraphy may fail to visualize the SLN in some patients. The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify risk factors associated with SLN nonvisualization on lymphoscintigraphy. For this single-center retrospective study, all data of lymphoscintigraphy of SLN procedures from March 2011 to April 2021 were collected and reviewed from the Amsterdam UMC database. Results A total of 1886 SLN procedures were included in this study. The SLN nonvisualization rate was 25.1% on lymphoscintigraphy at 4 h post-injection. The SLN nonvisualization rate decreased to 9.4% after reinjection. Multivariable analysis showed that age >= 70 years (P < 0.001; OR: 2.27; 95% CI: 1.46-3.53), BMI >= 30 kg/m(2) (P = 0.031; OR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.04-2.12) and nonpalpable tumors (P = 0.004; OR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.15-2.07) were independent predictors of SLN nonvisualization. Tumor location, brand of radiopharmaceutical, injected dose and volume, experience of preparer and administrator were not associated with SLN nonvisualization. None of the patient, tumor or tracer characteristics were associated with SLN nonvisualization after radiotracer reinjection. Conclusions This study shows that risk factors for SLN nonvisualization in breast cancer patients during preoperative lymphoscintigraphy are age >= 70 years, BMI >= 30 kg/m(2) and nonpalpable tumors. Our results support the notion that SLN lymphoscintigraphy is a very robust technique that does not depend on the experience of the preparer or administrator of the radiotracer.

Copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized via thermal decomposition and applied as a reusable and green catalyst in the synthesis of functionalized 4H-pyran derivatives using malononitrile, an aromatic aldehyde, and a beta-ketoester in ethanol at room temperature. The nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR, EDX, SEM, TGA, and DTG analysis. The catalyst was recovered from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnet and decanting the mixture. Recycled catalyst was reused for several times without significant loss in its activity. Running the one-pot three-component reaction at room temperature, using a green solvent under environmentally friendly reaction conditions, ease of catalyst recovery and recyclability, no need for column chromatography and good to excellent yields are advantages of this protocol.

Background: Dementia, as a global public health problem, is becoming increasingly serious. As a precursor of dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) plays an important role in the diagnosis and prevention of dementia. Recent studies have found a correlation between gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels and cognitive function in men. The relationship between GGT levels and cognitive function in women remains unclear because GGT activity and expression differ between the sexes. Method: We recruited a total of 2,943 Chinese women from Jidong and Taian in 2019. We grouped the participants according to GGT levels, diagnosed MCI using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) scale, and modeled the study outcomes using logistic regression to explore the relationship between GGT level and MCI. We also analyzed the interaction of obesity, sleep duration, and hyperuricemia with GGT in the development of MCI. Results: The prevalence of MCI increased with increasing GGT level, from the lowest quartile to the highest quartile of GGT: 8.4% (66/786), 14.2% (119/840), 17.6% (108/613), and 21.4% (151/704), respectively. At the same time, as GGT levels increased, so did the risk of MCI. In the fully adjusted model, compared with those for participants in the lowest GGT quartiles, the odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MCI for participants in the second, third, and fourth GGT quartiles were 1.49 (1.04-2.12), 1.53(1.06-2.21), and 1.88 (1.33-2.65), respectively. The risk of developing MCI was further increased in people with high GGT levels who were obese (OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.39-2.76, P < 0.001), slept less (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.35-2.71, P < 0.001), had high levels of uric acid (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.03-2.32, P < 0.001), or after menopause (OR = 2.92, 95% CI: 2.07-4.12, P < 0.001). Conclusion: We found that MCI is more common in women with elevated GGT levels, so GGT could be a potential diagnostic marker for MCI. Meanwhile, our findings indicated that women with high GGT levels had an increased risk of MCI when they were obese, sleep deprived, had high serum uric acid (SUA) levels or underwent menopause. 1,2,3-Triazole is an interesting N-heterocyclic framework which can act as both a hydrogen bond donor and metal chelator. In the present study, C-H hydrogen bonding of the 1,2,3-triazole ring was surveyed theoretically and the results showed a good agreement with the experimental observations. The click-modified magnetic nanocatalyst Pd@click-Fe3O4/chitosan was successfully prepared, in which the triazole moiety plays a dual role as both a strong linker and an excellent ligand and immobilizes the palladium species in the catalyst matrix. This nanostructure was well characterized and found to be an efficient catalyst for the CO gas-free formylation of aryl halides using formic acid (HCOOH) as the most convenient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly CO source. Here, the aryl halides are selectively converted to the corresponding aromatic aldehydes under mild reaction conditions and low Pd loading. The activity of this catalyst was also excellent in the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of various aryl halides with phenylboronic acids in EtOH/H2O (1 : 1) at room temperature. In addition, this catalyst was stable in the reaction media and could be magnetically separated and recovered several times.

The novel copper(II) ions decorated Fe3O4@SiO2 composite magnetic spheres were synthesized by grafting copper(II) ions onto glucosamine modified Fe3O4@SiO2 NPs. WRKY transcription factors participate in the salt stress responses of various plant species, but the underlying functional mechanisms are not well understood, particularly in grape. In this study, the role of VvWRKY13 in the salt stress response was characterized and the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms were explored. The results show that VvWRKY13 expression was induced by salt stress, and the VvWRKY13 transcript level in the salt stress-sensitive cultivar was significantly higher than that in the resistant cultivars. Overexpression of VvWRKY13 in Arabidopsis significantly inhibited the growth of transgenic plants under salt stress, indicating that VvWRKY13 has a negative effect on the salt stress response. The photosynthetic rate, contents of proline and soluble sugars, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as transcriptional levels of proline and soluble sugar metabolic genes, such as P5CS1, SS1, SS2 and G6PDH, as well as SOD and CAT encoding genes CAT1, CAT2, and Cu/Zn-SOD, all decreased under salt stress, whereas hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-free radical contents increased in transgenic Arabidopsis plants compared with those of wild-type plants. VvWRKY13 suppressed upregulation of SnRK2.3, ABF1, ABF2, ABF3, RD29B, RD29A, and RAB18 induced by salt stress, but showed no significant effect on the transcript levels of SnRK2.2, SnRK2.6, or RD22, indicating that VvWRKY13 affects salt stress tolerance via a specific abscisic acid signaling pathway. Key message VvWRKY13, isolated from grapevine, negatively regulate salt stress tolerance by depressing photosynthetic capacity, inhibiting salt-induced accumulation of osmolytes andup-regulation in antioxidant activity as well as expression of related genes.
