Group 6 alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes behave as electrophiles with highly reactive masked dienes such as anthrone and 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone, which also can react as bidentate nucleophiles. Both Cr-0 and W-0 alkynyl carbene complexes require tertiary amines to promote the formation of 1,4-C-addition products, but a marked dependence of the reactivity on the metal was observed. Although W-0 complexes form exclusively the 1,4-C-adducts in the presence of a catalytic amount of base, Cr-0 complexes lead to new anthrone-derived bis-carbene complexes, obtained by a sequential 1,4-C- and 1,4-O-addition process with high diastereoselectivity and only in the presence of an excess of base. DFT computational studies show that the gap between the LUMO of the complex and the HOMO of the anthrone determines the differences in reactivity and that the stability of the intermediate metal allenyls formed after the initial 1,4-addition is decisive for the outcome of the reaction.

Two new naphthalenone derivatives, 5-hydroxy-4-oxo-2-(2-oxopropyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-1-yl acetate (1) and 5-hydroxy-2-(2-hydroxypropyl)naphthalene-1,4-dione (2), together with two new anthrone derivatives, (S)-2,5-dihydroxy-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroanthracene-9,10-dione (3) and 4,5-dihydroxy-2-methyl-9H-xanthen-9-one (4), were isolated from the fermentation broth of endophytic Micromonospora sp. NEAU-gq13. Their structures were determined by 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR, and HR-ESI-MS analysis. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibited strong cytotoxic activity against human central nervous system cancer (SF-268) with the IC50 values of 3.04 and 5.66 mu g/ml, respectively. Moreover, compound 2 also displayed potent activity against human liver cancer (HepG2) with an IC50 value of 1.01 mu g/ml.

Using the anthrone scaffold of the prior channel blockers, alternative heteroarylmethyl substituents were installed via enolate alkylation reactions. Herein, we report the development of a tailor-made fluoride-based heterogeneous catalyst, POLITAG-F, for the waste-minimized continuous production of cyanohydrin silyl ethers. The careful designing of the polymeric support and the choice of fluoride ion as the anionic species resulted in the improvement of catalytic efficiency and allowed the effective conversion of different carbonyls (aldehydes, ketones, and unsaturated ketones). The POLITAG-F catalyst, employed under flow conditions, led to the conversion of large amounts (over 100 mmol) of the substrate with a productivity of 0.1 mmol min(-1). In addition, flow conditions allowed to minimize the waste production reaching an associated E-factor value of 0.04. An exhaustive evaluation of the environmental impact of our protocol has been reported by considering several green metrics (process mass intensity, atom economy, and reaction mass efficiency) and also the benign index and the safety hazard index of the process.

Some antagonistic bacteria contribute to the management of plant diseases by stimulating the host natural defense and/or by providing direct biocontrol of pathogens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biocontrol performances and the ability to induce a systemic response to crown gall of four strains belonging to Bacillus and Pseudomonas genera. Evaluation of in vitro antagonistic ability showed that the four bacteria had a different spectrum of activity against the three tested strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. A delay in time of appearance and a significant reduction of the tumor size were observed in tomato plants obtained by bio-primed seeds and stem inoculated with A. tumefaciens. Seed priming with antagonistic strains stimulated some systemic defense mechanisms in tomato plants that can be related to the reduction of disease symptoms induced by A. tumefaciens. Both antagonists and A. tumefaciens strains induced variations in phenol content and peroxidase activity while polyphenol oxidase activity was mainly affected by the single A. tumefaciens strain. The response was different in relation to the various combinations of antagonist/pathogen, however Pseudomonas brassicacearum EPR3 strain was the most effective strain.

The determinants of the temporal variability of indoor dust concentrations of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) remain mostly unexplored. We examined temporal variability of dust concentrations and factors affecting dust concentrations for a wide range of SVOCs. We collected dust samples three times from 29 California homes during a period of 22 months and quantified concentrations of 47 SVOCs in 87 dust samples. We computed intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) using three samples collected within the same house. We calculated correlation coefficients (r) between two seasons with similar climate (spring and fall) and between two seasons with opposite climate (summer and winter). Among 26 compounds that were detected in more than 50% of the samples at all three visits, 20 compounds had ICCs above 0.50 and 6 compounds had ICCs below 0.50. For 19 out of 26 compounds, correlation coefficients between spring and fall (r = 0.48-0.98) were higher than those between summer and winter (r = 0.09-0.92), implying seasonal effects on dust concentrations. Our study showed that within-home temporal variability of dust concentrations was small (ICC > 0.50) for most SVOCs, but dust concentrations may vary over time for some SVOCs with seasonal variations in source rates, such as product use.

Background: Colorectal familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) adenomas exhibit a uniform pathogenetic basis caused by a germline mutation in the adenomatous polyposis gene (APC), but the molecular changes leading to their development are incompletely understood. However, dysregulated apoptosis is known to substantially affect the development of colonic adenomas. One of the key regulatory proteins involved in apoptosis is apoptosis repressor with caspase recruitment domain (ARC). Methods: The expression of nuclear and cytoplasmic ARC in 212 adenomas from 80 patients was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. We also compared expression levels of ARC with the expression levels of p53, Bcl-2, COX-2, and MMR proteins. Statistical analyses were performed by Spearman’s rank correlation and linear regression test. Results: ARC was overexpressed in the nuclei and cytoplasm of most FAP adenomas investigated. Cytoplasmic ARC staining was moderately stronger (score 2) in 49.1% (n = 104/212) and substantially stronger (score 3) in 32.5% (n = 69/212) of adenomas compared to non-tumorous colorectal mucosa. In 18.4% (n = 39/212) of adenomas, cytoplasmic ARC staining was equivalent to that in non-tumorous mucosa. Nuclear expression of ARC in over 75% of cells was present in 30.7% (n = 65/212) of investigated adenomas, and nuclear expression in 10-75% of cells was detected in 62.7% (n = 133/212). ARC expression in under 10% of nuclei was found in 6.6% (n = 14/212) of adenomas. The correlation between nuclear ARC expression and cytoplasmic ARC expression was highly significant (p = 0.001). Moreover, nuclear ARC expression correlated positively with overexpression of Bcl-2, COX-2 p53 and beta-catenin. Cytoplasmic ARC also correlated with overexpression of Bcl-2. Sporadic MMR deficiency was detected in very few FAP adenomas and showed no correlation with nuclear or cytoplasmic ARC. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that both cytoplasmic and nuclear ARC are overexpressed in FAP adenomas, thus in a homogenous collective. The highly significant correlation between nuclear ARC and nuclear beta-catenin suggested that ARC might be regulated by beta-catenin in FAP adenomas. Because of its further correlations with p53, Bcl-2, and COX-2, nuclear ARC might play a substantial role not only in carcinomas but also in precursor lesions.

Catalytic carbon-carbon bond formation building on reductive coupling is a powerful method for the preparation of organic compounds. The identification of environmentally benign reductants is key for establishing an efficient reductive coupling reaction. Herein an efficient strategy enabling H-2 as the sole reductant for the palladium-catalyzed allyl-allyl reductive coupling reaction is described. A wide range of allylamines and allylic alcohols as well as allylic ethers proceed smoothly to deliver the C-C coupling products under 1 atm of H-2. Kinetic studies suggested that the dinuclear palladium species was involved in the catalytic cycle.

Co3O4 and Eu-doped Co3O4 nanocatalysts were synthesized through an ultrasonic-assisted solvothermal method and were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) methods. Spinel cubic crystalline system for synthesized nanocatalysts was confirmed with XRD, whereas the spherical morphology of Co3O4 changed to nanorods after Eu3+ doping, which was affirmed with FESEM micrographs. Catalytic performance of the nanomaterials was examined through the synthesis of 2-amino-4H-benzochromenes using aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile, and beta-naphthol condensation under solvent-free conditions and microwave irradiation. The selective oxidation of C-H bond is critical for feedstock manufacturing in chemical industry. Current strategies typically involve the use of oxygen or peroxide as the oxidation reagent under high temperature, which sets severe challenges in production sustainability and industrial safety. Herein, we demonstrate an environmental-friendly and safe electrocatalytic strategy for the selective oxidation of benzyl group to ketones at ambient conditions, while using water as the sole oxygen source. Water addition reduces the onset potential of anodic C-H oxidation, and produces 1-tetralone with satisfying conversion and excellent ketone to alcohol ratio. Layered MnO2 catalysts (with rich oxygen vacancies) further adjust the water affinity and facilitate the oxidation, leading to a significantly improved faradaic efficiency.
