10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a novel aromatic diamine, was synthesized from anthrone by three-step process. A series of polyimides containing methyl substituents and 9(10H)-anthrone pendant groups was prepared from this diamine with various aromatic dianhydridesviathe poly(amic acid) (PAA) precursors and subsequent thermal or chemical imidization procedure. Inherent viscosities of PAAs are between 0.87 and 1.58 dL/g, and the corresponding polyimides have the weight-average molecular weight and number-average molecular weight in the range of 49,400-64,200 and 28,700-37,700, respectively. Most of the polyimides obtained through the chemical cyclodehydration method are soluble in NMP, DMF, DMAc, Py andm-cresol at room temperature. These polyimides have glass transition temperatures of 289-313 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 484-524 degrees C, char yields of 55-63% at 800 degrees C, and temperature at the maximum-rate degradation of 560-584 degrees C in nitrogen, respectively. The polyimide films obtained through the thermal imidization have tensile strength of 76.43-119.74 MPa, elongation at break of 6.93-12.33%, and tensile modulus of 1.91-2.38 GPa.

The tricyclic aromatic ketone 9-anthrone and its derivatives are under basic conditions in equilibrium with their corresponding anionic forms. Unlike the neutral species, the 9-anthrolate anions can be excited by blue LED light and thus, are able to initiate a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reaction. To demonstrate the synthetic applicability of the catalytic system, various (hetero)aryl chlorides were converted in C-C and C-Het bond-forming reactions affording the corresponding arylation products in moderate to excellent yields. The reactions proceed under very mild conditions without the need for a sacrificial electron donor. Besides 9-anthrone, other closely related derivatives were synthesised and investigated concerning their ability to catalyse demanding reductive transformations. Based on spectroscopic findings and radical trapping experiments a conceivable mechanism is proposed.

Herein, we report the synthesis of task-specific amino-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquid, acetate1-(2-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-ethyl)-3-methyl-3H-imidazol-1-ium; (Boc-NH-EMIM.OAc), as an efficient catalyst for the acetylation of alcohols, phenols, and amines in the presence of acetic anhydride (acetylating reagent). Remarkably, acetic anhydride in the presence of 10 mol% of catalyst (Boc-NH-EMIM.OAc) under solvent-free conditions showed excellent acetylation activity in shorter duration of time. On the basis of this, a general procedure for acetylation of alcohols, phenols, and amines has been developed. The ionic liquid (Boc-NH-EMIM.OAc) can be readily recovered and reused successfully up to four consecutive cycles without any significant loss of its catalytic activity. We have been able to show that this acetylating method has many advantages. It gives high yields, takes shorter time, and develops the possibility of benign environmental-friendly process.

Based on the broad spectrum of biological activity of hydrazide-hydrazones, trifluoromethyl compounds, and clinical usage of cholinesterase inhibitors, we investigated hydrazones obtained from 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzohydrazide and various benzaldehydes or aliphatic ketones as potential inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). They were evaluated using Ellman’s spectrophotometric method. The hydrazide-hydrazones produced a dual inhibition of both cholinesterase enzymes with IC50 values of 46.8-137.7 mu M and 19.1-881.1 mu M for AChE and BuChE, respectively. The majority of the compounds were stronger inhibitors of AChE; four of them (2-bromobenzaldehyde, 3-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde, cyclohexanone, and camphor-based 2o, 2p, 3c, and 3d, respectively) produced a balanced inhibition of the enzymes and only 2-chloro/trifluoromethyl benzylidene derivatives 2d and 2q were found to be more potent inhibitors of BuChE. 4-(Trifluoromethyl)-N’-[4-(trifluoromethyl)benzylidene]benzohydrazide 2l produced the strongest inhibition of AChE via mixed-type inhibition determined experimentally. Structure-activity relationships were identified. The compounds fit physicochemical space for targeting central nervous systems with no apparent cytotoxicity for eukaryotic cell line together. The study provides new insights into this CF3-hydrazide-hydrazone scaffold.

The throughput limitations of additive state-of-the art patterning thus arising may be overcome by capillary stamping -parallel additive substrate patterning without ink depletion by mesoporous silica stamps, which enable ink supply through the mesopores anytime during stamping. Thus, either arrays of substrate-bound nanoparticles or colloidal nanodispersions of detached nanoparticles are accessible. Three types of model inks are processed: 1) drug solutions, 2) solutions containing metallopolymers and block copolymers as well as 3) nanodiamond suspensions representing colloidal nanoparticle inks. Oxidation reactions have been extensively studied in the context of the transformations of biomass-derived furans. Three 2D coordination polymers, [Cu-2(mu(4)-dpa)(bipy)(2)(H2O)](n)center dot 6nH(2)O (1), [Mn-2(mu(6)-dpa)(bipy)(2)](n) (2), and [Zn-2(mu(4)-dpa)(bipy)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot 2nH(2)O (3), were prepared by a hydrothermal method using metal(II) chloride salts, 3-(2 ‘,4 ‘-dicarboxylphenoxy)phthalic acid (H(4)dpa) as a linker, as well as 2,2 ‘-bipyridine (bipy) as a crystallization mediator. Thermal stability and catalytic behavior of 1-3 were also studied. In particular, zinc(II) coordination polymer 3 functions as a highly active and recoverable heterogeneous catalyst in the mild cyanosilylation of benzaldehydes with trimethylsilyl cyanide to give cyanohydrin derivatives. The influence of various parameters was investigated, including a time of reaction, a loading of catalyst and its recycling, an effect of solvent type, and a substrate scope. As a result, up to 93% product yields were attained in a catalyst recoverable and reusable system when exploring 4-nitrobenzaldehyde as a model substrate. This study contributes to widening the types of multifunctional polycarboxylic acid linkers for the design of novel coordination polymers with notable applications in heterogeneous catalysis.

Ecological wastewater treatment plant (EWWTP), a kind of emerging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in recent years, combined microbiology with botany which is efficient for the removal of nitrogen and organic matter, as well as deodorization. The occurrence and removal of micro-organic pollutants in EWWTPs were still not well known. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their typical derivatives (SPAHs) including the oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and methyl PAHs (MPAHs) were investigated in an EWWTP in Guangdong Province, China. The concentrations of the sigma 6 OPAHs (114-384ng/L) were higher than the sigma 16 PAHs (92-250ng/L), and much higher than the sigma 4 MPAHs (13-64ng/L) and sigma 9 ClPAHs (2-3ng/L) in the EWWTP and the effluent receiving river. The total removal efficiencies of the PAHs, OPAHs, MPAHs, and ClPAHs in the EWWTP (43 +/- 14%, 41 +/- 7%, 55 +/- 16%, and 18 +/- 4%) were lower than the traditional WWTPs, probably due to the lower concentration of the sludge in the ecological treatment. The advanced treatment process (microfiltration and UV disinfection treatment) contributed much less (0-20%) to the whole removal efficiency than the ecological treatment (80-100%). The effluent from the EWWTP slightly reduced the PAHs and SPAHs concentrations in the receiving river. The high concentrations of the PAHs and SPAHs in the receiving river were similar to the influent of the EWWTP, indicating that some untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the river, especially in the upstream.

As microfluidic systems play important roles to advance chemical synthesis applications in pharmaceutical and life science fields, the demand for fully-automated chemical synthesis work cycles grows. A successful automation of chemical synthesis with high yields requires not only executing sequential steps of organic chemical reactions, but also simple and adaptive purification (i.e., workup) techniques in each step. Despite recent advances in microreactor technologies, seamlessly integrating reactions and work-up toward a fully-automated chemical synthesis platform is an unmet challenge. In this study, we have demonstrated an electrowetting-ondielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidic device (DMF) as an efficient in-line work-up tool for organic chemical synthesis reactions. The model protocol performed on EWOD DMF involves an acid-base workup, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), and in-line solvent-swap. Device operation parameters of each reactant and unit process have been optimized. This study manifests the capacity of an EWOD device to transform into a drug discovery platform, particularly by hosting synthetically important reactions that require complicated work-up sequences.

The simply prepared CuMgAl hydrotalcite (CuMgAl-LDH) has been developed as an efficient catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone in the presence of N-Hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). Various alkyl arenes could be tolerated under the selected reaction conditions. The kinetic study showed that the oxidation of ethylbenzene is a first-order reaction over CuMgAl-LDH. The mechanism study indicated that CuMgAl-LDH could accelerate not only the conversion of ethylbenzene, but also the transformation of the alcohol intermediate to ketone. The positive effect of surface basicity of the catalyst on the reaction has been observed in the aerobic oxidation of the ethylbenzene.
