Organic pollutants associated with diesel exhaust particles (DEP), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, may negatively impact human health. However, a comprehensive overview of their effects on endocrine nuclear receptor activities is still missing. Here, we evaluated the effects of extracts and chromatographic fractions (fractionated according to increasing polarity) of two standard reference materials derived from distinct types of diesel engines (SRM 2975, SRM 1650b), on activation of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma), glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and thyroid receptor alpha (TR alpha), using human cell-based reporter gene assays. Neither DEP standard modulated AR or GR activities. Crude extracts and fractions of SRM 1650b and SRM 2975 suppressed ER alpha-mediated activity in the ER-CALUX (TM) assay; however, this effect could be partly linked to their cytotoxicity in this cell line. We observed that only SRM 2975 extract and its fractions were partial PPAR gamma inducers, while SRM 1650b extract was not active towards this receptor. Importantly, we found that both extracts and polar fractions of SRM activated TR alpha and significantly potentiated the activity of endogenous TR alpha ligand, triiodothyronine. Based on a detailed chemical analysis of both extracts and their polar fractions, we identified several oxygenated PAH derivatives, that were present at relatively high levels in the analyzed DEP standards, including 3-nitrobenzanthrone (3-NBA), anthracene-9,10-dione, phenanthrene-9,10-dione. 9H-fluoren-9-one or benzo[a] anthracene-7,12-dione, to activate TR alpha activity. Nevertheless, these compounds provided only a minor contribution to the overall TR alpha activity identified in polar fractions. This suggests that yet unidentified polar polyaromatic compounds associated with DEP may, apart from their known impact on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor or steroid signaling, deregulate activities of additional nuclear receptors, in particular of TR alpha. A novel metal-free, reusable, and green catalytic system comprising hydrothermal carbon microspheres (HCMSs) supporting N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) was developed and employed in the aerobic oxidation of alcohol. Hierarchically porous HCMSs with good monodispersity were produced by the hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose and designed NaOH-impregnated calcination under a static air atmosphere. The meso- and macroporous pores on HCMSs make up 71% of the total pore volume. The covalent immobilization of NHPI onto HCMSs was first accomplished by grafting hyperbranched polyquaternary amine via repetitive ring-opening reactions of diglycidyl ether and subsequent amidation with 4-carboxy-NHPI. Owing to the cocatalysis of grafted quaternary ammonium salt, a designed heterogeneous catalyst has superior performance to free NHPI in the oxidation of 2-phenylethanol. The established catalytic system achieved 42% conversion and up to 96% selectivity of acetophenone at 90 degrees C under 1 atm O-2 for 20 h and presented a versatile catalytic effect for diversified alcohols. Immobilized NHPI could be facilely recycled via simple filtration and displayed good stability for six cycles without a discernible decrease of reactivity or damage of catalyst morphology in repeated oxidation test.

Understanding the physical mechanisms governing aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) and aggregation-caused-quenching plays a vital role in developing functional AIE materials. In this work, tetraphenylethene (TPE, a classical AIEgen) and naphthalimide (NI, a popular fluorophore with ACQ characteristics) were connected through non-conjugated linkages and conjugated linkages. We showed that the nonconjugated-linkage of TPE to NI fragments leads to substantial PET in molecular aggregates and ACQ. In contrast, the conjugated connection between TPE and NI moieties results in the AIE phenomenon by suppressing twisted intramolecular charge transfer. Group 6 alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes behave as electrophiles with highly reactive masked dienes such as anthrone and 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone, which also can react as bidentate nucleophiles. Both Cr-0 and W-0 alkynyl carbene complexes require tertiary amines to promote the formation of 1,4-C-addition products, but a marked dependence of the reactivity on the metal was observed. Although W-0 complexes form exclusively the 1,4-C-adducts in the presence of a catalytic amount of base, Cr-0 complexes lead to new anthrone-derived bis-carbene complexes, obtained by a sequential 1,4-C- and 1,4-O-addition process with high diastereoselectivity and only in the presence of an excess of base. DFT computational studies show that the gap between the LUMO of the complex and the HOMO of the anthrone determines the differences in reactivity and that the stability of the intermediate metal allenyls formed after the initial 1,4-addition is decisive for the outcome of the reaction.

A nickel-catalyzed reductive decyanation of aromatic nitriles has been developed, in which the readily available and abundant ethanol was applied as the hydride donor. Various functional groups on the aromatic rings, such as alkoxyl, amino, imino and amide, were compatible in this catalytic protocol. Heteroaryl, benzylic and alkenyl nitriles were also tolerated. Mechanistic investigation indicated that ethanol provided hydride efficiently via beta-hydride elimination in this reductive decyanation.

A CF3SO2Na/Pd(OAc)(2) co-catalysis strategy was developed to produce aryl ketones via visible-light-induced decarboxylative cross-coupling of alpha-oxocarboxylic acids and aryl boronic acids. An efficient and green protocol for aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols in ethanol using Cu-I-Y zeolite catalysts assisted by TEMPO (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine-N-oxyl) as the radical co-catalyst in the presence of atmospheric air under mild conditions is reported. The Cu-I-Y zeolite prepared via ion exchange between CuCl and HY zeolite was fully characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques including XRD, XPS, SEM, EDX and HRTEM. The incorporation of Cu(i) into the 3D-framework of the zeolite rendered the catalyst with good durability. The results of repetitive runs revealed that in the first three runs, there was hardly a decline in activity and a more substantial decrease in yield was observed afterwards, while the selectivity remained almost unchanged. The loss in activity was attributed to both the formation of CuO and the bleaching of copper into the liquid phase during the catalysis, of which the formation of CuO was believed to be the major contributor since the bleaching loss for each run was negligible (<2%). In this catalytic system, except TEMPO, no other additives were needed, either a base or a ligand, which was essential in some reported catalytic systems for the oxidation of alcohols. The aerobic oxidation proceeded under mild conditions (60 degrees C, and 18 hours) to quantitatively and selectively convert a wide range of benzylic alcohols to corresponding aldehydes, which shows great potential in developing green and environmentally benign catalysts for aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The system demonstrated excellent tolerance against electron-withdrawing groups on the phenyl ring of the alcohols and showed sensitivity to steric hindrance of the substrates, which is due to the confinement of the pores of the zeolite in which the oxidation occurred. Based on the mechanism reported in the literature for homogenous oxidation, a mechanism was analogously proposed for the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols catalysed by this Cu(i)-containing zeolite catalyst. 10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

The main focus of this work is to investigate the degradation behavior of two newly developed encapsulants for photovoltaic applications (thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and polyolefin elastomer (POE)), compared to the most widely used Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) upon exposure to two different artificial ageing tests (with and without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation). Additive composition, optical and thermal properties and chemical structure (investigated by means of Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry, UV-Visible-Near Infrared spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis and Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy, respectively) of the analyzed polymers were monitored throughout the exposure to artificial ageing tests. Relevant signs of photo-oxidation were detectable for TPO after the UV test, as well as a depletion of material’s stabilizers. Signs of degradation for EVA and POE were detected when the UV dose applied was equal to 200 kW h m(-2). A novel approach is presented to derive information of oxidation induction time/dose from thermogravimetric measurements that correlate well with results obtained by using oxidation indices.

A new aromatic diamine, 10,10-bis [4-(4-amino-2-pyridinoxy)phenyl]-9(10H)-anthracenone (BAPPA) was synthesized from anthrone as the starting material, and the corresponding pyridine- and anthrone-containing poly(ether amide)s (PEAs) were prepared from BAPPA with various aromatic diacid chlorides via a low-temperature solution polycondensation. The resulting PEAs having number-average molecular weights (M-n) of 29,500-33,400 g/mol with the polydispersity index ranged from 1.75 to 1.84, were all amorphous, and displayed excellent thermal stability with the glass transition temperatures of 263-355 degrees C, the temperatures of 415-441 degrees C at 5% weight loss and the higher than 50% residues at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. These new PEAs were soluble in polar solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N,N-dimethylacetamide and pyridine, even almost in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature and could form transparent, strong and flexible films with tensile strengths of 84-97 MPa, tensile moduli of 2.1-3.2 GPa and elongations at break of 4-13%. Also, the present PEAs exhibited high optical transparence with the UV cutoff wavelength in the 342-362 nm range, and 83-90% transmittance at 500 nm. These results indicated the introduction of anthrone and pyridine groups into the backbone could improve the solubility and transparence of polyamides.
