A series of novel trinuclear ruthenium carbonyl complexes [mu-eta(2)-2-OC6H4-CH=N Ar)](2)Ru-3(CO)(8)[Ar = Ph (8), C6H4-4-Me (9), C6H4-4-CF3 (10), C6H4-4-Cl (11), C6H3-2,6-Me-2 (12), C6H3-2,6-Et-2 (13)] and [mu-eta(2)-2-OC6H4-CH=N-C6H3-2,6(i)Pr(2)]Ru-3(CO)(9) (14) were designed and synthesized. All the seven novel complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. Molecular structures of 8, 11, 13 and 14 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The catalytic performance of these complexes in the oxidation of secondary alcohols was explored and it was found the combination of such complexes and N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMO) exhibits high catalytic activities for the oxidation of secondary alcohols, giving the corresponding carbonyl compounds in excellent yields. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) disease is a global rapidly spreading virus showing very high rates of complications and mortality. Till now, there is no effective specific treatment for the disease. Aloe is a rich source of isolated phytoconstituents that have an enormous range of biological activities. Since there are no available experimental techniques to examine these compounds for antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, we employed an in silico approach involving molecular docking, dynamics simulation, and binding free energy calculation using SARS-CoV-2 essential proteins as main protease and spike protein to identify lead compounds from Aloe that may help in novel drug discovery. Results retrieved from docking and molecular dynamics simulation suggested a number of promising inhibitors from Aloe. Root mean square deviation (RMSD) and root mean square fluctuation (RMSF) calculations indicated that compounds 132, 134, and 159 were the best scoring compounds against main protease, while compounds 115, 120, and 131 were the best scoring ones against spike glycoprotein. Compounds 120 and 131 were able to achieve significant stability and binding free energies during molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, the highest scoring compounds were investigated for their pharmacokinetic properties and drug-likeness. The Aloe compounds are promising active phytoconstituents for drug development for SARS-CoV-2.

Gas-phase C?C coupling reactions mediated by Ni (II) complexes were studied using a linear quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. Upon collision-induced dissociation (CID), they extrude CO2 forming the organometallic cation [(phen)Ni(R-1)](+), which undergoes gas-phase ion-molecule reactions (IMR) with acetate esters CH3COOR2 to yield the acetate complex [(phen)Ni (OOCCH3)](+) and a C?C coupling product R-1-R-2. These Ni(II)/phenanthroline-mediated coupling reactions can be performed with a variety of carbon substituents R-1 and R-2 (sp(3), sp(2), or aromatic), some of them functionalized. Reaction rates do not seem to be strongly dependent on the nature of the substituents, as sp(3)-sp(3) or sp(2)-sp(2) coupling reactions proceed rapidly. Experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations, which provide insights into the energetics associated with the C?C bond coupling step.

Biological fouling, also called biofouling, is the undesirable formation of organisms on a surface immersed in water. When the exterior surface of an object such as a vessel is submerged in seawater for a prolonged period, micro and macro organisms usually accumulate on the surface. Biofilms are a set of microorganisms attached to a surface through exopolymers they produce, also known as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPS are a mixture of polymers produced by microorganisms such as bacteria in the presence of biomass. EPS are mainly made up of carbohydrates and proteins, but in smaller quantities, they also contain lipids, nucleic acids, and humic substances. Proteins and carbohydrates found in eps can be quantified by using biochemical methods. The Modified Lowry method, BCA method, and Bradford methods are the common biochemical methods used to quantify protein. Anthrone-sulphuric acid and phenol-sulphuric acid are most common methods used to quantify carbohydrate. The Lowry method was determined to be the best method to quantify protein because it has high precision, low error and low limit of detection. Also, it is highly sensitive and reproducible. The anthrone method was determined to be the best method to quantify carbohydrate because it has high precision, low error, low LOQ. Results were confirmed by testing on substrates deployed in the marine environment to allow establishment of a natural biofilm for study.

A simple protocol to overcome the explosive pentafluoroethylation of carbonyl compounds by HFC-125 is described. The use of potassium (K) bases with triglyme or tetraglyme as a solvent safely yields the pentafluoroethylation products in good to high yields. The experimental results suggest that an encapsulation of the K cation by glymes as K(glyme)(2) inhibits the contact between the K cation and the reactive anionic pentafluoroethyl counterion, preventing their transformation into KF and explosive tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). The generation of sterically demanding [K(G3)(2)](+) and [K(G4)(2)](+) is an effective way as an unstable pentafluoroethyl anion reservoir.

A novel helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) bearing Boc protectedl-proline pendants (poly-1(m)) was designed and synthesized. Removed the protecting Boc groups on thel-proline pendants led to the formation of helical polymer poly-2(m), which showed high optical activity owing to the preferred right-handed helix of polyisocyanide main chain. Optically active helical poly-2(m)showed excellent catalytic ability on asymmetric aldol reaction. Helical polymer catalysts exhibited enhanced stereoselectivity in aldol reaction compared to small moleculel-proline. Under the optimized aldol reaction condition, the enantiomeric excess (ee) and diastereomeric ratio (dr) values of the aldol reaction product were respectively up to 90% and > 20/1. Moreover, the helical polyisocyanide catalyst Poly-2(m)can be easily recovered and reused in the aldol reaction for at least five cycles with maintained its activity and stereoselectivity. Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy.
