Ball milling of calcium carbide (CaC2) enables the reaction of its ethynyl moiety with organic electrophiles. This was realized simply by co-milling CaC(2)with organic substrates in a sealed jar without the need for an additive or a catalyst. Various ketones including those bearing alpha-hydrogens were ethynylated in good yields at short reaction times. Aryl halides are also amenable substrates for this protocol as they furnish aryl ethynes through a benzyne intermediate. This method offers a practical and cheap alternative to the established procedures for introducing ethynyl functionalities.

We report here a C-H homoallylation reaction of aromatic ketones with methylenecyclopropanes (MCPs) only using a catalytic amount of Fe(PMe3)(4). A variety of aromatic ketones and MCPs are applicable to the reaction to form ortho-homoallylated aromatic ketones selectively via regioselective scission of the three-membered rings. The homoallylated products are amenable to further elaborations, providing functionalized 1,2-dihydronaphthalenes.

A series of 4-thiazolinone derivatives (D1-D58) were designed and synthesized. All of the derivatives were evaluated in vitro for neuraminidase (NA) inhibitory activities against influenza virus A (H1N1), and the inhibitory activities of the five most potent compounds were further evaluated on NA from two different influenza viral subtypes (H3N2 and B), and then their in vitro anti-viral activities were evaluated using the cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction assay. The results showed that the majority of the target compounds exhibited moderate to good NA inhibitory activity. Compound D18 presented the most potent inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 13.06 mu M against influenza H1N1 subtype. Among the selected compounds, D18 and D41 turned out to be the most potent inhibitors against influenza virus H3N2 subtype (IC50 = 15.00 mu M and IC50 = 14.97 mu M, respectively). D25 was the most potent compound against influenza B subtype (IC50 = 16.09 mu M). In addition, D41 showed low toxicity and greater potency than reference compounds Oseltamivir and Amantadine against N1-H275Y variant in cellular assays. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis showed that introducing 4-CO2H, 4-OH, 3-OCH3-4-OH substituted benzyl methylene can greatly improve the activity of 4-thiazolinones. Further SAR analysis indicated that 4-thiazolinone and ferulic acid fragments are necessary fragments of target compounds for inhibiting NA. Molecular docking was performed to study the interaction between compound D41 and the active site of NA. This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.

In this study, two double-anode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were connected in series for degradation of the azo dye reactive brilliant red X-3B. After the series connection, the electricity generation of one of the MFCs decreased, and the other was not affected too much. Due to the special structure in the double-anode MFC reduced the imbalanced performance between the MFC units, the occurrence of voltage reversal was limited. The removal efficiencies in two MFC reactors were not consistent after the series connection, the results showed that the MFC with the reduced electricity generation had the higher removal efficiencies, it was 12.90, 11.66, and 40.05% higher than in the MFC in which the power generation capacity was not affected after the series connection, the MFC without serial connection, and the control group, respectively. Meanwhile, the microbial communities related to the degradation of refractory organic compounds increased and related to electricity generation decreased in the MFC with the reduced electricity generation, the changes of the microbial communities were consistent with its electricity generation and the removal efficiencies. The degradation products in the effluent from two MFC units showed that had the products generated from the MFC with the reduced electricity generation had simpler structures comparing the other MFC unit. An efficient metal-free strategy for the synthesis of alpha-substituted homoallylamine derivatives has been developed via a 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP)-promoted 2-aza-Cope rearrangement of aldimines, generated in situ by condensation of aldehydes with easily accessible 1,1-diphenylhomoallylamines. This reaction provides rapid access to alpha-substituted homoallylamines with excellent functional group tolerance and yields. The reaction takes place at room temperature and no chromatographic purification is required for product isolation. The synthetic utility of the current method is further demonstrated by the transformation of the obtained benzophenone ketimines into N-unprotected homoallylamines, an alpha-amino alcohol and an alpha-amino amide.

10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a novel aromatic diamine, was synthesized from anthrone by three-step process. A series of polyimides containing methyl substituents and 9(10H)-anthrone pendant groups was prepared from this diamine with various aromatic dianhydridesviathe poly(amic acid) (PAA) precursors and subsequent thermal or chemical imidization procedure. Inherent viscosities of PAAs are between 0.87 and 1.58 dL/g, and the corresponding polyimides have the weight-average molecular weight and number-average molecular weight in the range of 49,400-64,200 and 28,700-37,700, respectively. Most of the polyimides obtained through the chemical cyclodehydration method are soluble in NMP, DMF, DMAc, Py andm-cresol at room temperature. These polyimides have glass transition temperatures of 289-313 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 484-524 degrees C, char yields of 55-63% at 800 degrees C, and temperature at the maximum-rate degradation of 560-584 degrees C in nitrogen, respectively. The polyimide films obtained through the thermal imidization have tensile strength of 76.43-119.74 MPa, elongation at break of 6.93-12.33%, and tensile modulus of 1.91-2.38 GPa.

A facile synthesis and isolation of pristine silicon tetrakis(trifluoromethanesulfonate), Si(OTf)(4), is reported, acting as the first neutral silicon-based Lewis superacid suitable towards soft and hard Lewis bases. Its OTf groups have a dual function: they are excellent leaving groups and modulate the degree of reactivity towards soft and hard Lewis bases. Exposed to soft Lewis donors, Si(OTf)(4) leads to [L2Si(OTf)(4)] complexes (L=isocyanide, thioether and carbonyl compounds) with retention of all Si-OTf bonds. In contrast, it can cleave C-X bonds (X=F, Cl) of hard organic Lewis bases with a high tendency to form SiX4 (X=F, Cl) after halide/triflate exchange. Most notable, Si(OTf)(4) allows a gentle oxydefluorination of mono- and bis(trifluoromethyl)benzenes, resulting in the formation of the corresponding benzoylium species, which are stabilized by the weakly coordinating [Si(OTf)(6)] dianion.

Interest in the potential human health of semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs) in indoor and outdoor environments has made the exposure assessment and source appointment a priority. In this study, paired indoor and outdoor atmospheric fine particle (PM2.5) samples were collected from 15 homes representing five typical urban cities in southern China. Four typical SVOCs, including 16 congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 13 congeners of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and 8 congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), as well as tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its three debrominated congeners were analyzed. The highest total concentrations were found for OPFRs, followed by PAHs, PBDEs, and TBBPA. The indoor concentrations of two alkyl-OPFR isomers, tributylphosphate (TBP) and tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), were 4.3 and 11 times higher, respectively, than those of outdoors (p < 0.05). Additionally, the ratios of indoor to outdoor concentrations of alkyl-OPFR isomers varied greatly, suggesting that these compounds originated mainly from different household goods and products used in individual homes. The outdoor concentrations of PAHs and highly brominated PBDEs (BDE-209) typically exceeded the indoor concentrations. Significant correlations were also found between indoor and outdoor PM2.5 samples for PAHs and BDE-209, indicating that outdoor sources such as vehicle exhausts and industrial activities strongly influence their atmospheric occurrence. Additionally, the concentrations of debrominated TBBPA derivatives were higher than those of TBBPA in over 33% of both indoor and outdoor air particle samples. Nevertheless, our results indicated that inhalation exposure to typical SVOCs posed no non-carcinogenic risks to the human body. Although we observed notable differences in the sources, occurrences, and distributions of typical SVOC congeners, more studies using matched samples are still needed to unambiguously identify important indoor and outdoor sources in order to accurately assess the contributions of different sources and the associated human exposure risks.
