The chemical functionalization or modification of polymers to alter or improve the physical and mechanical properties constitutes an important field in macromolecular research. Fabrication of polymeric materials via structural tailoring of commercial or commodity polymers that are produced in vast quantities especially possess unique advantages in material applications. In the present study, we report on benign chemical modification of unsaturated styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) copolymer using available backbone alkene groups. Covalent attachment of aldehyde functional substrates onto reactive isoprene double bond residues was conveniently carried out using UV-induced Paterno-Buchi [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Model organic compounds with different structures were utilized in high efficiency chemical modification of parent polymer chains via oxetane ring formation. Functionalization studies were confirmed via(1)H NMR, FT-IR and SEC analyses. The methodology was extended to covalent crosslinking of polymer chains to obtain organogels with tailorable crosslinking degrees and physical characteristics. Considering the outstanding elastic properties of unsaturated rubbers and their high commercial availability, abundant reactive double bonds in backbone chains of these polymers offer easy to implement structural modification via proposed Paterno-Buchi photocycloaddition.

A gold-catalyzed tandem annulation of propargylic alcohols and pyridylhomopropargylic alcohols is achieved, providing an atom-economical approach to a diverse set of polycyclic dihydrobenzofurans in good yields. The reaction proceeds via the 5-endo-dig cyclization/Meyer-Schuster rearrangement/Friedel-Crafts-type pathway. The applications of a new supported tribromide reagent (poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium tribromide) resin) were reported. This supported tribromide resin was used as a catalyst in the acetalization and diacetylation of benzaldehydes under mild conditions with high efficiency. The effects of solvents, and amount of the supported tribromide resin on the reactions were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, most of acetal and 1,1-diacetates of benzaldehydes were selectively obtained in excellent yields.

Development of a low-cost, environmentally benign and robust catalyst for multipurpose industrially relevant organic transformations is highly desirable for the sustainable future of chemical industries. A hybrid cobalt doped-cerium oxide nanocatalyst (Co@CeO2NC) was prepared via simple coprecipitation method using water as the solvent. The characterization of Co@CeO2NC was performed using different techniques such as XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, EDAX-mapping, BET, and XPS analysis. The structural characterization of the prepared sample by XRD and XPS analysis revealed the presence of the mixed phase of cobalt oxide and cobalt doped-cerium oxide as a hybrid (Co@CeO2NC). Industrially relevant organic transformations such as (i) nitrile formation using aldehyde with hydroxyl amine hydrochloride, (ii) reductive amination of aldehydes to form tertiary N,N-dimethyl amines, and (iii) direct acetylation of alcohols/amines with acetic acid were achieved in an excellent manner using Co@CeO2NC hybrid as the multifunctional catalyst. Excellent catalytic activity of Co@CeO2NC was noticed for the conversion of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde to 4-chlorobenzonitrile with 99% conversion and 99% selectivity and 100% conversion of benzaldehyde to N,N-dimethylbenzylamine using DMF as NMe2 source, reductant, and solvent. Moreover, acetylation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol and 2-methyl aniline gave excellent conversion and selectivity toward the formation of -O and -N acetyl. The scope of the Co@CeO2NC was further evaluated for other aldehydes, alcohols, and amines with an excellent conversion and high selectivity.

Copper(I) complexes of the types [Cu(N-N)(PPh3)(2)]NO3(LC41-LC44) and [Cu(N-N)(PPh3)(NO3)] (LC45) carrying 3-substituted 1-pyridine-2-ylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine (N-N) derivatives and triphenylphosphine (PPh3) ligands have been prepared. The synthesized copper(I)-phosphine complexes were fully characterized by NMR, IR, ESI-MS and UV-visible spectroscopy as well as by cyclic voltammetry. Selected structures such as LC42, LC43 and LC45 were additionally analysed by single-crystal X-ray method, which show that copper(I) centre adopts a highly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The(1)H and(13)C NMR spectral data of the complexes throw light on the nature of metal-ligand bonding. They display d pi-pi* metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition and show quasireversible Cu-I/Cu(II)metal oxidation. Among the copper(I)-phosphine complexes, LC41-LC44 exhibit moderate cytotoxicity (IC50: 24 h, 67-74 mu M; 48 h, 58-70 mu M) against human lung epithelial adenocarcinoma A549 cells, whereas LC45 displays the best activity (IC50: 24 h, 42 mu M; 48 h, 34 mu M) for A549 cancer cell line, which is better than that of the commercial antitumor drug cisplatin. All the complexes also displayed excellent selectivity by being relatively inactive against the human lung epithelial L132 normal cell line with selectivity index (SI) values ranging from 3.4 to 7.4. The complexes block cell cycle progression of A549 cells in G(0)/G(1)phase. FACSVerse analyses are suggestive of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptotic cell death induced by the LC41, LC43 and LC45. The induction of apoptosis in A549 cells was shown by Annexin V with propidium iodide (PI) and 4 ‘,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining methods and established the ability of LC41, LC43 and LC45 to accumulate in the cell nuclei.

Background. International studies prove the high burden of mental illnesses among refugees. Postmigration stressors in the country of refugemay affect themental health and result in depression. Objectives. The study examines whether postmigration stressors are associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adult refugees in Germany. Methods. Secondary data analysis based on cross-sectional data of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees 2016 (N= 4465) that is representative for Germany. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with binary logistic regression models to examine associations between depression and sociodemographic, postmigration, and psychosocial factors. Results. Depressive symptoms show 19.4% of the surveyed refugees. Almost all selected postmigration stressors are significantly associated with depression after adjustment for sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Unemployment (aOR= 1.48 [1.04-2.12]), loneliness (aOR= 1.14 [1.10-1.18]), and a rejected or undecided asylum application (aOR= 1.34 [1.06-1.70]) increase the odds of depressive symptoms, whereas asylum interviews (aOR= 0.71 [0.56-0.91]) and higher housing satisfaction (aOR= 0.94 [0.91-0.98]) lower the odds of depression. Conclusions. Postmigration stress is associated with the occurrence of depressive symptoms. Sociopolitical interventions considering stressful and protective factors of the postmigration phase can reduce the burden of mental disorders in refugee populations.

Group 6 alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes behave as electrophiles with highly reactive masked dienes such as anthrone and 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone, which also can react as bidentate nucleophiles. Effect of yeast inoculation format (F), temperature (T), and on lees ageing time (t) factors were evaluated on the composition of sparkling wines by a quantitative fingerprint obtained from volatile metabolites and the response of an electronic nose (E-nose). Wines elaborated according the traditional method at 10 and 14 degrees C, free cells and yeast biocapsules formats were monitored at 15 and 24 months of ageing time. Sixty-six volatiles identified and quantified in the eight sampling lots were subjected to a pattern recognition technique. A dual criterion based on univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis (PLS-DA) through the variable importance projection (VIP) values, allowed to identify ten volatiles as potential markers for T factor, eleven fort and twelve for F factors. The discriminant models based on E-nose dataset enable a 100% correct classification of samples, in relation with t and F factors and the 83% for T factor.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have shown promises in numerous applications such as bio-inspired robotics, tactile displays, tunable optics, and microfluidics, owing to their unique combination of large actuation strain, high energy density, and light weight. However, the practical applications of the DEAs have been hindered partly due to their poor reliability and durability under high-strain actuation. A major failure mechanism is from the localized electrical breakdown. Compliant electrodes with self-clearing capability have been studied to prevent premature failures. Here, an interpenetrating bilayer compliant electrode comprising a thin layer of a water-based polyurethane (WPU) overcoated on an ultrathin single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) layer is reported. The thin polyurethane layer serves as the dielectric barrier to suppress corona discharges of the nanotubes in air. The SWNT+WPU bilayer electrode has the capability to self-clear at the breakdown sites, enhancing the fault tolerance and mendability of the DEA at a large-strain actuation. Stable actuation at 150% area strain for 1000 cycles under square-wave voltage and 5.5-h continuous actuation at a constant voltage have been achieved for acrylic elastomer-based DEAs.
