The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.

Gao et al. design a lung targeting nanovesicles made from human neutrophils membrane, and co-loaded inflammatory resolving mediator RvD1 and antibiotic CAZ inside the nanovesicles. These nanovesicles could accelerate the inflammation resolution and release the antibiotics to treat bacterial infections in mice. This approach is useful in developing multifunctional nanoparticle-based therapeutics for lung bacterial infections treatment. Resolution is an active process that protects the host damage from inflammation responses induced by infections. Simultaneously resolving inflammation and eliminating pathogens may be effective to treat infectious diseases, but it is required to deliver therapeutics to infectious sites. Here, we proposed a strategy to incorporate RvD1 and an antibiotic (ceftazidime) in human neutrophil-membrane derived nanovesicles that can specifically target inflamed vasculature for treatment of lung infection caused by P. aeruginosa. Using the nitrogen cavitation method, we generated liposome-like nanovesicles from human neutrophil membrane. The results showed that nanovesicles loaded with RvD1 decreased cytokine levels and neutrophil lung infiltration, thus shortening the resolution intervals of lung inflammation. When RvD1 and ceftazidime were co-loaded in nanovesicles, they alleviated both inflammation and bacterial growth in the mouse lung. The studies reveal a new strategy to treat infectious diseases by designing nanoparticles to simultanesouly target host inflammatory pathways and pathogens.

A three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sodium metabisulfite, and 3-azido-2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol under mild conditions is described. Chiral polyureas of cinchona alkaloids were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. The Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of cinchona urea dimers6and aromatic diiodide7afforded the chiral polyureas (P1-P4). The catalytic activity of the chiral polymers was subsequently investigated. The asymmetric Michael addition of ketoesters to nitroolefins was successfully catalyzed by the polymeric organocatalysts (P1-P4) to give the corresponding Michael adducts with high catalytic activities and excellent enantionselectivities (up to >99% ee). The polymeric catalysts were insoluble in commonly used organic solvents. They were easily recovered and reused several times without any loss of the catalytic activity.

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with abnormal inflammatory and coagulation markers, potentially mediating thrombotic events. Our objective was to investigate the incidence, time course, laboratory features, and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients with suspected venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who had undergone ultrasound imaging for suspected VTE from March 13 to May 18, 2020. The medical records of the included patients were reviewed for D-dimer, fibrinogen, prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, platelet count, C-reactive protein (CRP), and high-sensitivity troponin T at admission and at up to seven time points before and after ultrasound examination. The clinical outcomes included superficial venous thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, intubation, and death. Mixed effects logistic, linear, and Cox proportional hazards methods were used to evaluate the relationships between the laboratory markers and VTE and other in-hospital outcomes. Results: Of 138 patients who had undergone imaging studies, 44 (31.9%) had evidence of VTE. On univariable analysis, an elevated admission CRP (odds ratio [OR], 1.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.09; P = .02; per 10-U increase in CRP), platelet count (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.04-2.12; P = .03; per 1000-U increase in platelet count), and male sex (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.19-5.84; P = .02), were associated with VTE. However only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis (OR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.01-5.56; P = .048). The independent predictors of death included older age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00-1.07; P = .04), active malignancy (HR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.39-13.91; P = .01), elevated admission D-dimer (HR, 1.016; 95% CI, 1.003-1.029; P = .02), and evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (HR, 4.81; 95% CI, 1.76-13.10; P = .002). Conclusions: Male sex, elevated CRP, and elevated platelet count at admission were associated with VTE on univariable analysis. However, only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis. Older age, active malignancy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and elevated D-dimer at admission were independently associated with death for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Purpose Many studies have revealed that statin therapy reduced mortality in cancer patients, especially in breast cancer, but the effect for second cancer was unclear. We, therefore, performed a comparable cohort study to determine the risk of second cancer in breast cancer patients with statin therapy. Methods Using claims data from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Program, this study enrolled newly diagnosed breast cancer patients from 2000 to 2007 with and without statin therapy as the statin (n = 1222) and nonstatin (n = 4888) cohorts, respectively. The nonstatin cohort was propensity score matched by cohort entry year, age, and randomly selected comorbidities. These two cohorts were followed up until the diagnosis of second cancer, death, or the end of 2011. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios. Results The statin cohort had a lower incidence rate than the nonstatin cohort for second cancer (7.37 vs. 8.36 per 1000 person-years), although the difference was not significant (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.65-1.26). Compared with the nonstatin cohort, the second cancer risk was significantly higher for patients taking pravastatin (aHR 2.71, 95% CI 1.19-6.19) but lower for those receiving multiple statin treatment (aHR 0.45, 95% CI 0.25-0.81) and combined lipophilic and hydrophilic type of statin (aHR 0.42, 95% CI 0.20-0.89). The risk was lower for patients receiving a cumulative defined daily dose (cDDD) of > 430 (aHR 0.41, 95% CI 0.19-0.86). Conclusion This study showed that there is little association between statin use and second cancer risk in breast cancer patients.

Designing surface-confined molecular systems capable of expressing changes in functional properties as a result of slight variations in chemical structure under the influence of an external stimulus is of contemporary interest. In this context, we have designed three tetraterpyridine ligands with variations in their core architecture (phenyl vs tetraphenylethynyl vs bithiophene) to create spray-coated electrochromic assemblies of iron(II)-based metallosupramolecular polymer network films on transparent conducting oxide substrates. These assemblies exhibited molecular permeability and spectroelectrochemical properties that are in turn dictated by the ligand structure. Electrochromic films with high coloration efficiencies (up to 1050 cm(2)/C) and superior optical contrast (up to 76%) with a concomitant color-to-color redox transition were readily achieved. These functional switching elements were integrated into sandwich-type electrochromic cells (CE up to 641 cm(2)/C) that exhibited high contrast ratios of up to 56%, with attractive ON-OFF ratios, fast switching kinetics, and high operational stability. Every measurable spectroelectrochemical property of the films and devices is an associated function of the ligand structure that coordinates the same metal ion to different extents. While exhibiting a ligand-structure induced differential metal coordination leading to porosity and spectroelectrochemical diversification, these assemblies allow the creation of electrochromic patterns and images by a simple spray-coating technique.
