Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with abnormal inflammatory and coagulation markers, potentially mediating thrombotic events. Our objective was to investigate the incidence, time course, laboratory features, and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients with suspected venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who had undergone ultrasound imaging for suspected VTE from March 13 to May 18, 2020. The medical records of the included patients were reviewed for D-dimer, fibrinogen, prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, platelet count, C-reactive protein (CRP), and high-sensitivity troponin T at admission and at up to seven time points before and after ultrasound examination. The clinical outcomes included superficial venous thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, intubation, and death. Mixed effects logistic, linear, and Cox proportional hazards methods were used to evaluate the relationships between the laboratory markers and VTE and other in-hospital outcomes. Results: Of 138 patients who had undergone imaging studies, 44 (31.9%) had evidence of VTE. On univariable analysis, an elevated admission CRP (odds ratio [OR], 1.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.09; P = .02; per 10-U increase in CRP), platelet count (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.04-2.12; P = .03; per 1000-U increase in platelet count), and male sex (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.19-5.84; P = .02), were associated with VTE. However only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis (OR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.01-5.56; P = .048). The independent predictors of death included older age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00-1.07; P = .04), active malignancy (HR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.39-13.91; P = .01), elevated admission D-dimer (HR, 1.016; 95% CI, 1.003-1.029; P = .02), and evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (HR, 4.81; 95% CI, 1.76-13.10; P = .002). Conclusions: Male sex, elevated CRP, and elevated platelet count at admission were associated with VTE on univariable analysis. However, only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis. Older age, active malignancy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and elevated D-dimer at admission were independently associated with death for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Heat processing of ready-to-drink beverages is required to ensure a microbiologically safe product, however, this can result in the loss of bioactive compounds responsible for functionality. The objective of this study was to establish the thermal stability of a novel dihydrochalcone, 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxyphloretin (2), 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosylphloretin (3) and other Cyclopia subternata phenolic compounds, in model solutions with or without citric acid and ascorbic acid. The solutions were heated at 93, 121 and 135 degrees C, relevant to pasteurisation, commercial sterilisation and ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurisation, respectively. For most compounds, the acids decreased the second order reaction rate constants, up to 27 times. Compound 2 (46.29 +/- 0.53 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)), and to a lesser extent compound 3 (5.94 +/- 0.01 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)) were the most thermounstable compounds when treated at 135 degrees C without added acids. Even though differential effects were observed for compounds at different temperatures and formulations, overall, the phenolic compounds were most stable under UHT pasteurisation conditions.

Since the discovery of aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomenon, various stimuli-responsive materials have been rapidly developed. However, the development of self-assembled amphiphilic light-responsive materials in aqueous solution needs to be solved urgently. In this work, three new amphiphilic tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives (TPE-1, TPE-2 and TPE-3) with AIE properties and photochromism were synthesized and investigated. Owing to the different electron-donating abilities of the three groups attached to TPE units, the TPE-1, TPE-2 and TPE-3 displayed blue-green, yellow-green, and orange fluorescence emission in the aggregation state respectively. Furthermore, ordered nanoparticles formed via self-assembly in aqueous solution showed interesting photocyclization behaviors, which lead to fluorescence quenching under ultraviolet light irradiation (lambda = 365 nm). Therefore, the compounds can be used as anti-counterfeiting ink in the information encryption due to their amphiphilicity and photo-responsiveness. This work contributes new members to the amphiphilic light-responsive materials family and demonstrates the potential for applications in the fields of optical information storage, information security protection, and erase/rewrite systems.

It is well known that graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxides (RGO) are materials of today with immense application potentials. However, to realize the same large scale, reproducible, sustainable synthesis techniques such as greener methods which avoid utilization of toxic chemicals for synthesis, must be adopted. It is in this context, that here we report the reduction of GO to RGO by the extract of Thuja Orientalis (TO) seeds. As such, TO is a well-known bio-resource for medicinal and various other biotechnological applications as it contains Alpha Tocopherol, the major constituent of vitamin E. To the best of our knowledge, despite the wealth of literature, the current work makes a pioneering effort in applying TO seeds extract for reduction of GO to RGO. Thus, the reduction of GO, synthesized by the well-known modified Hummer?s method to RGO by TO extract, is confirmed from the results obtained by ultra-violet visible (UV?Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and especially, gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GCMS) techniques. Furthermore, the GCMS study is used to identify the compound Alpha Tocopherol responsible for reduction of GO to RGO. Based on current experimental evidences and literature views, the possible mechanism of reduction is suggested. Finally, the implications of present studies in the perspective of large scale, sustainable synthesis of RGO for various technological applications are discussed.

The migration of photoinitiators, phthalates and plasticizers from two paper and cardboard materials into food simulants (50% and 95% EtOH and Tenax) and foodstuffs (rice, cereals and milk powder) was studied. In the case of liquid simulants migration was observed to reach the equilibrium after 60 min and depended on the material type and the physicochemical parameters of the migrants, whereas the temperature (room temperature and 60 degrees C) did not show significant effects. The study of migration of the compounds from a baking paper to Tenax at high temperatures (150 and 250 degrees C) evidenced an increment of migration when increasing temperature, except for the most volatile analytes. Finally, the migration to foodstuffs was studied using fully validated analytical protocols. Overall, the comparison of the migration rates demonstrated that Tenax was adequate for the simulation of the migration to rice and cereals, but underestimated the migration to infant milk powder, for which 95% EtOH resulted a more suitable simulant.

A facile synthetic route was developed to prepare a surface-grafted brush layer of poly(vinyl ethers) (PVEs) directly by a radical mechanism, with the naked Li+ acting as a catalyst. Density functional theory calculations suggested that complexation of naked Li+ to VEs significantly reduced the highest unoccupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap from 5.08 to 0.68 eV, providing a better prospect for electron transfer. The structure, morphology, and surface properties of grafted polymer layers were characterized using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic water contact angle (DCA). Moreover, ellipsometry data indicated that the thickness of the polymer brushes was in the range of 20-60 nm, which corresponds to the grafting densities of 0.65-1.15 chain/nm(2), and DCA decreased from 84.4 to 45.3 degrees. Most importantly, no hydrolysis was observed for the modified surface after 30 days of exposure to phosphate-buffered saline solution, 0.1 mol/L NaOH(eq) and 0.1 mol/L HCl(eq), demonstrating excellent hydrolysis resistance with long service life. In addition, as a proof of concept, the side hydroxyl groups of grafted PVEs provide active sites for efficient fixation of bioactive molecules, e.g., glycosaminoglycan and serum protein.

The volatile compounds of Jiaozi-steamed breads (JSBs) fermented by Jiaozi starters from eight regions in China were extracted using simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) and headspace solid-phase microextraction and determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 1-Hexanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, phenylethyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, naphthalene, ethanol, acetic acid, and n-hexadecanoic acid were the main volatiles of JSBs. Principal component analysis exhibited that the volatiles of JSBs from Nanyang City, Xi’an City, and Zhumadian City was negatively correlated to that of other five JSB samples. Cluster analysis demonstrated that the volatile characteristics of JSBs from Heze City, Minqin County, Taian City, Weinan City, and Yuncheng City belonged to a category, and the JSBs of Nanyang City, Xi’an City, and Zhumadian City were different from other five JSBs. It demonstrated that the volatile components of steamed breads in North China and South China were different. Practical applications From this study, it can be seen that simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE) can completely extract volatile compositions of steamed breads fermented by Chinese traditional starter Jiaozi. SDE/GC-MS was suitable for the analysis of JSBs volatile composition. The relative contents of 1-hexanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, phenylethyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, naphthalene, ethanol, acetic acid, and n-hexadecanoic acid in JSBs were at high level, and their contents could be used as a marker to identify JSBs. The volatile compositions of JSBs made of Jiaozi starters from Heze City, Minqin County, Taian City, Weinan City, and Yuncheng City were similar. However, JSBs of Nanyang City, Xi’an City, and Zhumadian City were different from other five JSBs. The volatile components of steamed breads in North China and South China were different, which reflected the difference in dietary habit in the southern and northern areas of China.

BackgroundWith the increasing demand for vegetative oil and the approach of peak seed oil production, it is important to develop new oil production platforms from non-seed tissues. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is one of the crops for vegetable oil for industrial applications with yield around 1.4 ton oil per hectare produced in seed. The castor caruncle is a non-seed tissue attached to seed.ResultsCaruncle accumulates up to 40% oil by weight in the form of triacylglycerol (TAG), with a highly contrasting fatty acid composition when compared to the seed oil. Biochemical analysis indicated that the caruncle synthesizes TAGs independent of the seed. Such non-seed tissue has provided an excellent resource for understanding the mechanism of oil accumulation in tissues other than seeds. Transcriptome analysis revealed the key members of gene families involved in fatty acid synthesis and TAG assembly in the caruncle. A transient expression assay of these selected genes resulted in a 20-fold increased TAG accumulation in leaves.ConclusionsCastor caruncle utilizes an independent system to synthesize TAGs. Results provide the possibility of exploiting caruncle gene set to engineer oil production in non-seed tissues or microbes.

The purpose of this study was 3-fold: (a) to provide a lower tier assessment of the potential health concerns associated with e-liquid ingredients, (b) to prioritize e-liquid ingredients by calculating the e-tox index, and (c) to estimate acute toxicity of e-liquid mixtures. QSAR models were generated using QSARINS software to fill the acute toxicity data gap of 264 e-liquid ingredients. As a second step, the potential acute toxicity of e-liquids mixtures was evaluated. Our preliminary data suggest that a computational approach may serve as a roadmap to enable regulatory bodies to better regulate e-liquid composition and to contribute to consumer health protection.

Chiral polyurethanes of cinchona alkaloid were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. The Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of cinchona urethane dimers and aromatic diiodides afforded the chiral polyurethanes. The chiral polyurethane bearing free OH group at the C6′ position of the quinoline ring in the cinchona alkaloid unit showed high catalytic activities and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee) in the Michael addition reactions.
