Background. International studies prove the high burden of mental illnesses among refugees. Postmigration stressors in the country of refugemay affect themental health and result in depression. Objectives. The study examines whether postmigration stressors are associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adult refugees in Germany. Methods. Secondary data analysis based on cross-sectional data of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees 2016 (N= 4465) that is representative for Germany. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with binary logistic regression models to examine associations between depression and sociodemographic, postmigration, and psychosocial factors. Results. Depressive symptoms show 19.4% of the surveyed refugees. Almost all selected postmigration stressors are significantly associated with depression after adjustment for sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Unemployment (aOR= 1.48 [1.04-2.12]), loneliness (aOR= 1.14 [1.10-1.18]), and a rejected or undecided asylum application (aOR= 1.34 [1.06-1.70]) increase the odds of depressive symptoms, whereas asylum interviews (aOR= 0.71 [0.56-0.91]) and higher housing satisfaction (aOR= 0.94 [0.91-0.98]) lower the odds of depression. Conclusions. Postmigration stress is associated with the occurrence of depressive symptoms. Sociopolitical interventions considering stressful and protective factors of the postmigration phase can reduce the burden of mental disorders in refugee populations.

12-Deoxyphorbol-13-phenylacetate (DPP), found in Euphorbia resinifera, is a prototype of a new class of phorbol derivatives that function as protein kinase C activators with potent anti-tumor-promoting activity. To better understand the biosynthesis of DPP in E. resinifera and develop methods for its production, we used next-generation sequencing technologies to build a transcriptome dataset. We obtained a total of approximately 27,102,078 clean reads that were assembled into 90,448 unigenes. Of those, 129 and 59 unigenes were identified in the Terpenoid Backbone Biosynthesis (TBB) (KEGG map00900) and the Diterpenoid Biosynthesis (DB) (KEGG map00904) pathways, respectively. We investigated the expression patterns of 23 DPP biosynthesis-related genes and validated the results by quantitative real time PCR. The results showed that CMK (4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-o-erythritol kinase), MECS (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 2,4-cyclodiphosphate synthase), HDS (1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(E)-butenyl 4-diphosphate synthase), and IPI (Isopentenyl-diphosphate Delta-isomerase) of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway had a higher expression compared to other genes of TBB, whereas the expression levels of genes involved in the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway were relatively lower and not significantly different from each other. Furthermore, the expression of the 23 genes in root, stem and young stem differed, and the statistical results indicated that HMGS (Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase), MVK (mevalonic acid), MECT (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate cytidylyltransferase), MECS, HDS and IPI in the TBB pathway as well as KS in the DB pathway were significantly and positively correlated with the CS (casbene synthase) gene. These results suggested that both cytosol-localized MVA and plastid-localized MEP pathways may have a significant contribution in DPP accumulation, with MEP pathway playing a dominant role. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first transcriptome analysis of E. resinifera and the results reported here will aid the identification of functional genes and better understanding of DPP biosynthesis.

For the first time the occurrence of 25 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including; 11 personal care products (PCPs), six phthalate ester plasticizers (PEPs) and eight organophosphorus flame retardants (OPERs) was investigated in 72 water samples obtained from five bays in the Uganda sector of Lake Victoria. In addition, an assessment of the potential ecotoxic risk of the target OMPs to aquatic organisms was conducted. Water samples were analyzed for the target OMPs using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). All the target PCPs were found in all the water samples with the exception of musk ketone and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Triclosan (89-1400 ng L-1), benzophenone (36 -1300 ng L-1), and 4-methylbenzylidine camphor (21-1500 ng L-1) were the most predominant PCPs. All the six plasticizers were found in all the water samples with dibutyl phthalate (350-16 000 ng L-1), and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (210-23 000 ng L-1) detected at the highest concentrations. Five OPERs out of the eight targeted were found in all the water samples. Tricresyl phosphate (25-8100 ng L-1), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (24-6500 ng L-1) and triphenyl phosphate (54-4300 ng L-1) were the most dominant OPERs. The highest concentrations of OMPs were recorded in Murchison and Thurston Bays, presumably due to industrial wastewater effluents from the highly industrialized localities of the two Bays. Ecotoxicological risk assessment showed that PCPs (triclosan, musk ketone, and 4-MBC), plasticizers (dibutyl phthalate, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and OPERs (tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate and tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) pose a high ecotoxic risk to lives of aquatic organisms (risk quotients, RQ > 1). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic and carcinogenic. 16 PAHs as priority pollutants listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency were usually monitored. Therefore, multiple potentially toxic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are not monitored. In this study, atmospheric particulate matter samples from Beijing were analyzed using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight (GC x GC-TOF) mass spectrometry. The FT-ICR data detected high molecular weight PAHs, alkylated PAHs (APAHs) and heteroatom PAHs. The GC x GC-TOF data tentatively identified 386 PACs in five categories of identification confidence. Twenty-one spectra in the unknown class were manually resolved. Eighty-two PACs with high identification confidence were proposed for further research. The identities of five PAHs and five APAHs that are currently not regulated were confirmed using available standards and quantified in some samples. Some of these PACs, such as dibenzo[a,e]pyrene (C22H14) and 1-methylpyrene (C17H12), should be of concern because of their contamination levels and the high toxicities of themselves and/or their derivatives. This study highlights the possibility of expanding the traditional lists of PAHs to improve pollution control and risk assessment accuracy.

A crosslinked polymer hybrid film, ipn-poly(vinyl cinnamate-graft-2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate)-v-poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was synthesized by UV initiation using poly(vinyl cinnamate) (polyVCi), 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) crosslinker. Benzophenone (Ph2CO), was used as the photoinitiator. The synthesis was optimized by changing the concentration of HEMA, Ph2CO, EGDMA, and UV irradiation time. PolyVCi undergoes photocrosslinking by 2+2 photocylo addition while the monomer/crosslinker couple, HEMA/EGDMA, undergoes free radical polymerization and crosslinking to form EGDMA crosslinked polyHEMA. Hence, simultaneous interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) formation occurs. The IPN consists of dual network of photocrosslinked polyVCi and EGDMA crosslinked polyHEMA chains. Grafting of HEMA/EGDMA chains on the polyVCi backbone also occur during network formation. The chemical functionalities present in the polyVCi/polyHEMA/polyEGDMA IPN films obtained were characterized by FTIR and SEM analysis. The contact angle measurements show enhanced wettability of the IPN film compared to polyVCi surface. TGA analysis confirms thermal stability of the films. Swelling behavior of the films examined in water and in ethanol reveals the effects of the chemical natures of polyVCi and polyHEMA as well as that of crosslinking on the hydrophilicity of the film. The films were tested as drug release matrices using flurbiprofen. The drug was loaded into the film matrix during IPN formation under UV irradiation. PolyVCi/polyHEMA/polyEGDMA IPN proved to be a suitable release matrix for flurbiprofen demonstrating controlled release behavior and zero-order release kinetics. The release mechanism was confirmed by its Ritger-Peppas n value (1.00 to 1.42), which indicates super case II release.

Solid base is a kind of important heterogeneous catalyst for the transformation of various chemicals. Although many different novel solid bases have reported, it is a still challenging process to generate strong basic site on many functional supports due to the high temperature treatment of strong base preparation. In this paper, the strong basic site was successfully generated on hypercrosslinked porous polymers (HCPs) via a reducing group strategy. With the reducing groups on HCPs, the decomposition temperature of base precursor KNO3 could be as low as 320 degrees C. Further investigation illustrated the reducing groups participated in the KNO3 decomposition through a redox strategy. The obtained solid base catalysts showed good oxidation capacity of methylene compounds.

Six disubstituted Schiff base compounds were synthesized (A1-A6) and characterized using infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analyses (EA), 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS spectroscopic techniques. Crystal structure of A1 has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The antifungal activities against three fungi were assessed, and the results showed that compounds of A1 and A2 have good activity for Wheat gibberellic with EC50 value of 15.89 and 16.99 mg/L, respectively. Compounds of A3, A4 and A6 have good bioactivity against Maize rough bacteria (the value of EC50 is 8.23, 7.56 and 7.92 mg/L, respectively). Besides, for A1 and A2, the analysis of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) analysis and molecular electrostatic potential map were to further elaborate the reason for the good activity with density functional theory (DFT)-B3LYP/6-31G.

Synthesis of efficient and reusable catalyst was carried out by immobilizing azacrown ether onto the covalently linked amine-functionalized mesoporous MCM-41 via a simple method. Application of this linked azacrown ether functionalized MCM-41 catalyst was also investigated as an effective, heterogeneous in the synthesis of hexahydroquinoline derivatives under solvent-free conditions at environment temperature. The heterogeneous catalyst is characterized by TGA, XRD, TEM,(HNMR)-H-1,(CNMR)-C-13, and FT-IR techniques. The results of theses analysis showed that, MCM-41@azacrown-SB-Cu catalyst with a 22.99% mol loading of copper has given excellent catalytic activity and high efficiency in a short time.
