Combining the encapsulating capability of cyclodextrin and instinctive features of bentonite clay, a versatile metal free catalyst has been developed that could promote various chemical reactions such as Knoevenagel condensation, synthesis of xanthan and octahydroquinazolinones in aqueous media under ultrasonic irradiation. To prepare the catalyst, bentonite was Cl-functionalized and then reacted with isatin and guanidine successively to furnish amino functionalized bentonite. The latter then reacted with tosylated cyclodextrin. The resultant catalytic composite was characterized via XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, elemental mapping analysis, TGA and FTIR. The catalytic activity tests approved excellent activity of the catalyst as well as broad substrate scope. Notably, the catalyst could be simply recovered and reused for several reaction runs. Moreover, the activity of the composite was superior to that of its components.

Herein, we report an intramolecular radical cyclization reaction towards the synthesis of pyrrolidinone derivatives via metal-free photoredox catalysis under irradiation from blue LEDs. Some of the remarkable features of this protocol include synthetic efficiency, green reaction profile, easy isolation of products and short reaction time. The photophysical properties of synthesized compounds were investigated via steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy in the solid state. Results showed the promising opportunity for their spectral tuning together with large Stokes-shifted and highly active fluorescence emission, thus indicating that these molecular scaffolds can be effective probes for the biological applications and development of opto-electronic devices.

Organic pollutants associated with diesel exhaust particles (DEP), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, may negatively impact human health. However, a comprehensive overview of their effects on endocrine nuclear receptor activities is still missing. Here, we evaluated the effects of extracts and chromatographic fractions (fractionated according to increasing polarity) of two standard reference materials derived from distinct types of diesel engines (SRM 2975, SRM 1650b), on activation of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma), glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and thyroid receptor alpha (TR alpha), using human cell-based reporter gene assays. Neither DEP standard modulated AR or GR activities. Crude extracts and fractions of SRM 1650b and SRM 2975 suppressed ER alpha-mediated activity in the ER-CALUX (TM) assay; however, this effect could be partly linked to their cytotoxicity in this cell line. We observed that only SRM 2975 extract and its fractions were partial PPAR gamma inducers, while SRM 1650b extract was not active towards this receptor. Importantly, we found that both extracts and polar fractions of SRM activated TR alpha and significantly potentiated the activity of endogenous TR alpha ligand, triiodothyronine. Based on a detailed chemical analysis of both extracts and their polar fractions, we identified several oxygenated PAH derivatives, that were present at relatively high levels in the analyzed DEP standards, including 3-nitrobenzanthrone (3-NBA), anthracene-9,10-dione, phenanthrene-9,10-dione. 9H-fluoren-9-one or benzo[a] anthracene-7,12-dione, to activate TR alpha activity. Nevertheless, these compounds provided only a minor contribution to the overall TR alpha activity identified in polar fractions. This suggests that yet unidentified polar polyaromatic compounds associated with DEP may, apart from their known impact on the aryl hydrocarbon receptor or steroid signaling, deregulate activities of additional nuclear receptors, in particular of TR alpha. A CF3SO2Na/Pd(OAc)(2) co-catalysis strategy was developed to produce aryl ketones via visible-light-induced decarboxylative cross-coupling of alpha-oxocarboxylic acids and aryl boronic acids. This process was performed under air at room temperature, furnishing aromatic ketones in moderate to good yields. Various sensitive functional groups were well tolerated in this reaction. A synergistic catalytic mechanism involving O-2 was also proposed based on the experimental observations.

A visible-light-induced oxidative coupling of diselenides with readily available vinylarenes is demonstrated. This benign protocol allows one to access a wide range of alpha-aryl and alpha-alkyl selenomethyl ketones in good yields with excellent functional group compatibility. The distinct advantages of this protocol over all previous methods include the use of a green solvent and air as an oxidant and the lack of a photocatalyst, a base, and an oxidant as well as better green chemistry matrices. Furthermore, the title reaction can be performed with natural sunlight, the most sustainable energy source imaginable. Additionally, the mild reaction conditions, easy operation and suitability for the modification of styrene-functionalized biomolecules make the current reaction system a more attractive method for the synthesis of a variety of medicinal and agrochemical compounds of interest.

Biological fouling, also called biofouling, is the undesirable formation of organisms on a surface immersed in water. When the exterior surface of an object such as a vessel is submerged in seawater for a prolonged period, micro and macro organisms usually accumulate on the surface. Biofilms are a set of microorganisms attached to a surface through exopolymers they produce, also known as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPS are a mixture of polymers produced by microorganisms such as bacteria in the presence of biomass. EPS are mainly made up of carbohydrates and proteins, but in smaller quantities, they also contain lipids, nucleic acids, and humic substances. Proteins and carbohydrates found in eps can be quantified by using biochemical methods. The Modified Lowry method, BCA method, and Bradford methods are the common biochemical methods used to quantify protein. Anthrone-sulphuric acid and phenol-sulphuric acid are most common methods used to quantify carbohydrate. The Lowry method was determined to be the best method to quantify protein because it has high precision, low error and low limit of detection. Also, it is highly sensitive and reproducible. The anthrone method was determined to be the best method to quantify carbohydrate because it has high precision, low error, low LOQ. Results were confirmed by testing on substrates deployed in the marine environment to allow establishment of a natural biofilm for study.

The utilization of photochemical reaction channel based on radical process is rarely reported, which might be a very efficient and feasible strategy for improving generation of Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this work, a double ionic-type aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) of TIdBO was developed as a photosensitizer, of which the potential photocyclization characteristic involving an electron-transfer process had a positive effect on Type I ROS generation in aggregates under continuous light irradiation. Its noticeable photodynamic therapy (PDT) performance and self-monitoring of PDT process by the relationship between cellular morphology change and fluorescence intensity enhancement were achieved. In addition, it showed a good killing ability to microbes and specific interactions with microbes but not cells by regulating the incubation time. These intriguing results reveal a feasible design principle for the implementation of efficient PS preparation in clinical treatment under hypoxic conditions.

In the current research, two mesoporous structures of sodium zincate [Na2Zn(OH)(4)], spheres and aggregated particles, has been synthesized from sulfonation of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) and then bounding [Na2Zn(OH)(4)] particles onto the surface of sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde (SMF). Furthermore, in the present synthetic methodology the zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films on sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde was formed via the chemical deposition, and thermal treatment techniques of the sodium zincate. Several spectroscopic and analytical methods proved the structural and morphological properties of sodium zincate mesoporous structures based on sulfonated melamine formaldehyde [ SMF/Na2Zn(OH)(4)]. The experimental studies showed that these catalytic systems showed high activity in the Biginelli reaction for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one derivatives and will find recoverable potential application. The obtained results indicated that the synthesized mesoporous structures had a thermal stability near 300 degrees C, particle-size distribution around of 10-120 nm for spheres and the surface area of 6 and 2 m(2)/g for spheres and aggregated particles, respectively. A widely applicable approach was developed to synthesize ketones, esters, amides via the oxidative C-C bond cleavage of readily available alkyl aldehydes. Green and abundant molecular oxygen (O-2) was used as the oxidant, and base metals (cobalt and copper) were used as the catalysts. This strategy can be extended to the one-pot synthesis of ketones from primary alcohols and alpha-ketoamides from aldehydes.

An efficient and practical benzylic aerobic oxidation catalyzed by cheap and simple N-hydroxyimide organocatalyst has been achieved with high yields and broad substrate scope. The organocatalyst used can be recycled and reused by simple workup and only minute amount (1 mol% in most cases) of simple iron salt is used as promoter. Phenyl substrates with mild and strong electron-withdrawing group could also be oxygenated in high yields as well as other benzylic methylenes. Influence of substituents, gram-scale application, catalysts decay and general mechanism of this methodology has also been discussed.
