The chemical functionalization or modification of polymers to alter or improve the physical and mechanical properties constitutes an important field in macromolecular research. Fabrication of polymeric materials via structural tailoring of commercial or commodity polymers that are produced in vast quantities especially possess unique advantages in material applications. In the present study, we report on benign chemical modification of unsaturated styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) copolymer using available backbone alkene groups. Covalent attachment of aldehyde functional substrates onto reactive isoprene double bond residues was conveniently carried out using UV-induced Paterno-Buchi [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Model organic compounds with different structures were utilized in high efficiency chemical modification of parent polymer chains via oxetane ring formation. Functionalization studies were confirmed via(1)H NMR, FT-IR and SEC analyses. The methodology was extended to covalent crosslinking of polymer chains to obtain organogels with tailorable crosslinking degrees and physical characteristics. Considering the outstanding elastic properties of unsaturated rubbers and their high commercial availability, abundant reactive double bonds in backbone chains of these polymers offer easy to implement structural modification via proposed Paterno-Buchi photocycloaddition.

Due to the fact that tyrosinase is responsible for biosynthesis and regulation of melanins and browning food products, tyrosinase inhibitors can be favorable agents in cosmetics and medicinal industries. A series of novel 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzohydrazide were designed, synthesized, and their new application as tyrosinase inhibitors was also disclosed. Based on in vitro tyrosinase inhibitory assay, 4d as the strongest inhibitor of tyrosinase with an IC50 value of 7.57 mu M showed approximately 2.5-fold better inhibition than kojic acid as positive control followed by two compounds 4b (IC50 = 8.19 +/- 0.25 mu M) and 4j (IC50 = 8.92 +/- 0.016) which displayed preferable tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Detailed investigations on the mechanism of action of the 4d reported mix type of inhibition. More importantly, molecular modeling assessments proposed the ability of 4d for potential interaction with Cu (metal)-His (residue) within tyrosinase active site. Overall, 4d is a promising candidate for the development of anti-tyrosinase agents.

Chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBP) containing cinchona alkaloids were synthesized using a Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling polymerization reaction between a cinchona squaramide dimer and tri- or tetrasubstituted aromatic iodides. This is a new type of polymeric chiral organocatalyst. We found that the as-obtained chiral HBPs show excellent catalytic activity in the asymmetric Michael reaction. Almost perfect enantioselectivity (>99% ee) was achieved in the reaction of beta-ketoester and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. The three-dimensional network structure of the chiral HBPs is structurally robust and can be reused for further reaction without any loss in their catalytic activity. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Background. International studies prove the high burden of mental illnesses among refugees. Postmigration stressors in the country of refugemay affect themental health and result in depression. Objectives. The study examines whether postmigration stressors are associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adult refugees in Germany. Methods. Secondary data analysis based on cross-sectional data of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees 2016 (N= 4465) that is representative for Germany. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with binary logistic regression models to examine associations between depression and sociodemographic, postmigration, and psychosocial factors. Results. Depressive symptoms show 19.4% of the surveyed refugees. Almost all selected postmigration stressors are significantly associated with depression after adjustment for sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Unemployment (aOR= 1.48 [1.04-2.12]), loneliness (aOR= 1.14 [1.10-1.18]), and a rejected or undecided asylum application (aOR= 1.34 [1.06-1.70]) increase the odds of depressive symptoms, whereas asylum interviews (aOR= 0.71 [0.56-0.91]) and higher housing satisfaction (aOR= 0.94 [0.91-0.98]) lower the odds of depression. Conclusions. Postmigration stress is associated with the occurrence of depressive symptoms. Sociopolitical interventions considering stressful and protective factors of the postmigration phase can reduce the burden of mental disorders in refugee populations.

A convenient and eco-friendly, one-pot synthetic protocol for pharmaceutically important pyran-based heterocyclic compounds is repeated herein. The reactions were carried out at room temperature in a water-ethanol solvent mixture under direct irradiation of UV365 light source in the absence of photocatalyst. The merits of the present protocol include mild and catalyst-free reactions, green procedures, and high yields. The added advantage of this protocol is that it can be applied for large-scale synthesis of various pyran-based heterocyclic compounds without employing any expensive catalyst. Also, in vitro antibacterial screening of pyran derivative was investigated against both Gram-positive Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Herein, an operationally simple, environmentally benign and effective method for intermolecular radical hydroacylation of unactivated substrates by employing photo-induced hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) initiation is described. The use of commercially available and inexpensive photoinitiators (Ph2CO and NHPI) makes the process attractive. The olefin hydroacylation protocol applies to a wide array of substrates bearing numerous functional groups and many complex structural units. The reaction proves to be scalable (up to 5 g). Different functionalized fatty acids, petrochemicals and naturally occurring alkanes can be synthesized with this protocol. A radical chain mechanism is implicated in the process.

The applications of a new supported tribromide reagent (poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium tribromide) resin) were reported. This supported tribromide resin was used as a catalyst in the acetalization and diacetylation of benzaldehydes under mild conditions with high efficiency. Background Non-neoplastic anal sac disorders (ASD) are frequent presentations for dogs in primary-care practice but evidence-based information on disease occurrence and risk is sparse. This study estimates prevalence, breed associations and other risk factors as well as reporting on clinical management. Methods A cohort study of dogs attending VetCompass practices between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013. Risk factor analysis used multivariable logistic regression methods. Results Of 104,212 dogs attending 110 UK practices, the 1-year period prevalence of ASD was 4.40% (95% CI: 4.22-4.57). Compared to crossbreds, six breeds showed increased odds of ASD (Cavalier King Charles spaniel, King Charles spaniel, Cockapoo, Shih-tzu, Bichon Frise and Cocker spaniel), and six breeds showed reduced odds (Labrador Retriever, Border collie, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Lurcher, German Shepherd Dog and Boxer). Brachycephalic types had 2.6 times the odds for ASD compared to dolichocephalic types. Medication prescribed for ASD included antimicrobials (n = 480, 20.24%) and analgesics (n = 284, 11.97%). Anal sacculectomy was performed in under 1% of cases. Conclusions High prevalence, strong breed predispositions and evidence of severity suggested from the antimicrobial and analgesic therapies combined with current substantial knowledge gaps identify ASD as a key research-neglected syndrome in dogs.

In this work, 1,3,5,7-tetraazaadamantan-1-ium chloride (AIL) functionalized silica-coated calcium oxide hybrid nanocatalyst (CaO@SiO2@AIL) as a novel, efficient, green and recyclable heterogeneous ionic liquid catalyst was synthesized. Catalytic activity of the CaO@SiO2@AIL hybrid nanoparticles was investigated for synthesis of the pharmaceutically valuable 2-imino-2H-chromene and dihydropyrano[c]chromene derivatives. A wide range of amines and aromatic aldehydes containing either electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituent were examined using optimized conditions to produce the desired products. 2-Imino-2H-chromenes were synthesized under solvent-free condition, and dihydropyrano[c]chromenes were prepared in aqueous medium as green conditions within short reaction times, high yields and using easy workup procedures. Structure confirmation and surface properties of the core/shell hybrid nanoparticles were considered via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, WDS map scan, thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. This IL-supported heterogeneous nanocatalyst can be reused at least six times without considerable loss of its performance.

The development of mild and efficient processes for the selective oxygenation of organic compounds by molecular oxygen (O-2) is key for the synthesis of oxygenates. This paper discloses an atom-efficient synthesis protocol for the photo-oxygenation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) by O-2 to anthraquinone (AQ), which could achieve quantitative AQ yield (100 %) without any extra catalysts or additives under ambient temperature and pressure. A yield of 86.4 % AQ was obtained even in an air atmosphere. Furthermore, this protocol showed good compatibility for the photo-oxidation of several other compounds with similar structures to DHA. From a series of control experiments, free-radical quenching, and electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping results, the photo-oxygenation of DHA was probably initiated by its photoexcited state DHA*, and the latter could activate O-2 to a superoxide anion radical (O-2(.-)) through the transfer of its electron. Subsequently, this photo-oxidation was gradually dominated by the oxygenated product AQ as an active photocatalyst obtained from the oxidation of DHA by O-2(.-), and was accelerated with the rapid accumulation of AQ. The present photo-oxidation protocol is a good example of selective oxygenation based on the photoexcited substrate self-activated O-2, which complies well with green chemistry ideals.
