The migration of photoinitiators, phthalates and plasticizers from two paper and cardboard materials into food simulants (50% and 95% EtOH and Tenax) and foodstuffs (rice, cereals and milk powder) was studied. In the case of liquid simulants migration was observed to reach the equilibrium after 60 min and depended on the material type and the physicochemical parameters of the migrants, whereas the temperature (room temperature and 60 degrees C) did not show significant effects. The study of migration of the compounds from a baking paper to Tenax at high temperatures (150 and 250 degrees C) evidenced an increment of migration when increasing temperature, except for the most volatile analytes. Finally, the migration to foodstuffs was studied using fully validated analytical protocols. Overall, the comparison of the migration rates demonstrated that Tenax was adequate for the simulation of the migration to rice and cereals, but underestimated the migration to infant milk powder, for which 95% EtOH resulted a more suitable simulant.

An N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed synthesis of dibenzofulvenes and fluorenyl alcohols was developed. In the presence of 10 mol% NHC (1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) and 4 angstrom molecular sieves, 9-(trimethylsilyl)fluorene undergoes an olefination reaction with aldehydes to produce dibenzofulvenes in 43-99% yields. However, on reducing the NHC loading to 1 mol% and with the addition of water, 9-(trimethylsilyl)fluorene selectively undergoes nucleophilic addition with aldehydes to afford fluorenyl alcohols in 40-95% yields.

Bronsted acidic ionic liquid (BAIL) functionalized hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbons (NHPCs) with interesting 3D interconnected macro-meso-microporous structure are successfully prepared by chemical bonding -[C-3][SO3CF3-] (C-3 = PrSO3H) groups throughout the NHPC supports that are obtained via a single step CaCO3 nanoparticle-directed nanocasting approach combined with K2C2O4 chemical activation and urea/melamine self-activation during the process of carbonization of glucose and urea/melamine. By changing initial urea-to-glucose weight ratio in the preparation systems, the macro/meso/micropore proportion of the resulting GU-[C3N] [SO3CF3] catalysts are well-adjusted. The morphological characteristics, porosity properties and chemical structure of the prepared catalysts are well-characterized so that the contribution of the synergistic effect of CaCO3 nanoparticle and K2C2O4 to the formation of hierarchically porous structure is revealed. Owing to super strong Bronsted acidity and unique hierarchically porous structure of the catalysts, they exhibit excellent heterogeneous acid catalytic activity in raw pyrolysis biofuel upgrading via esterification of acetic acid with high boiling point benzyl alcohol or 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol in toluene media, and therefore high acetic acid removal efficiency and efficient production of value-added benzyl acetate or 4-methoxybenzyl acetate are obtained simultaneously. The catalysts also show good reusability in target reactions, attributing to chemical interactions between BAILs and NHPC supports.

UV-Vis experiments have supported the tautomerization of anthrone and the presence of the azo dye products in the hydrazone form. Aryl amines with broad biological applications have been involved to increase the utility of the obtained products. We report aggregation induced emission (AIE) driven polysaccharide polymersomes as fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanoprobes to study their intracellular enzyme-responsive delivery by real-time live-cell confocal microscopy bio-imaging techniques. An AIE active tetraphenylethylene (TPE) optical chromophore and plant-based vesicular directing hydrophobic unit were grafted on clinically relevant polysaccharide-dextran via enzyme-cleavable aliphatic ester chemical linkages. The TPE-tagged dextran self-assembled as 180 +/- 20 nm blue-luminescent polymersomes in aqueous medium and exhibited excellent encapsulation capabilities for water soluble Rose Bengal (RB) and water insoluble Nile red (NR) fluorophores. The selective photoexcitation of the TPE chromophore enabled the FRET process between the TPE donor and RB (or NR) acceptor molecule in <50 angstrom Forster distance afforded by the polymersome. The FRET probe was very stable under extracellular conditions and it exclusively underwent lysosomal esterase enzymatic biodegradation at the intracellular compartments to release RB. The enzyme-trigger enabled the FRET probe to function as an extracellular turn-ON -> intracellular turn-Off red-fluorescent signal (Probe-1). In this process, the AIE self-emission was also simultaneously restored on the TPE chromophore (blue-luminescent, Probe-2) followed by the isolation of donor and acceptor in the cytosol. As a result, this new design enabled the visualization of real-time enzyme-responsive delivery by monitoring the dual fluorescent signals from both the polymer host (blue) and encapsulated guest (red) in a single nano-platform. In vitro cytotoxicity studies established that the polymersome probe was non-toxic to cells up to 300 mu g mL(-1). Lyso-tracker staining experiments supported the FRET probe internalization in the lysosomal compartments for enzymatic-biodegradation. Live cell confocal microscopy with selective photo-excitation was used to directly monitor the enzyme-responsive FRET action in human breast cancer MCF 7 and wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblast cell lines (WT-MEFs). It was found that the tailor-made polymersome FRET probe was efficient to deliver the loaded cargo in <3 h in live cells which predicts the usefulness of the probe in biomedical research. 10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

Any catalyst should be efficient and stable to be implemented in practice. This requirement is particularly valid for manganese hydrogenation catalysts. While representing a more sustainable alternative to conventional noble metal-based systems, manganese hydrogenation catalysts are prone to degrade under catalytic conditions once operation temperatures are high. Herein, we report a highly efficient Mn(I)-CNP pre-catalyst which gives rise to the excellent productivity (TOF degrees up to 41 000h(-1)) and stability (TON up to 200 000) in hydrogenation catalysis. This system enables near-quantitative hydrogenation of ketones, imines, aldehydes and formate esters at the catalyst loadings as low as 5-200 p.p.m. Our analysis points to the crucial role of the catalyst activation step for the catalytic performance and stability of the system. While conventional activation employing alkoxide bases can ultimately provide catalytically competent species under hydrogen atmosphere, activation of Mn(I) pre-catalyst with hydride donor promoters, e.g. KHBEt3, dramatically improves catalytic performance of the system and eliminates induction times associated with slow catalyst activation. Manganese-based hydrogenation catalysts are sensitive to high temperatures and may degrade under industrially relevant conditions. Here, the authors report a highly efficient manganese pincer pre-catalyst displaying high TOF values (up to 41 000 h(-1)) and stability (TON up to 200 000) at loadings as low as 5-200 ppm.

A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88% yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3 : 1.0, a temperature of 75-100 degrees C, and a reaction time of 4 h. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-alpha-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4% yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.
