Novel chiral secondary amines bearing a tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine scaffold were created and used for catalytic asymmetric Michael reaction of anthrone with nitroalkenes. The relevant adducts were obtained in good to excellent yields (82%-98%) and enantioselectivities (75%-98%).

We report a set of electrochemically regulated protocols for the divergent synthesis of ketones and beta-keto esters from the same beta-hydroxycarboxylic acid starting materials. Enabled by electrochemical control, the anodic oxidation of carboxylic acids proceeded in either a one-electron or a two-electron pathway, leading to a 1,4-aryl transfer or a semipinacol-type 1,2-group transfer product with excellent chemoselectivity. The 1,4-aryl transfer represents an unprecedented example of carbon-to-oxygen group transfer proceeding via a radical mechanism. In contrast to previously reported radical group transfer reactions, this 1,4-group transfer process features the migration of electron-rich aryl substituents. Furthermore, with these chemoselective electrochemical oxidation protocols, a range of ketones and beta-keto esters including those possessing a challenging-to-access medium-sized ring could be synthesized in excellent yields.

Homogeneous cationic gold(i) catalysis emerged as a preferred avenue for the activation of alkenes and alkynes towards reactions with weak nucleophiles, especially in cyclization reactions. Here we report an intramolecular carboalkoxylation reaction of electron-rich benzyl ethers of 2-ethynylaryl phenols catalysed by a digold(i)-NHC complex. The reaction proceeds efficiently with low catalyst loading and the resulting 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans form in moderate to good yields. Based on the results of a cross-over experiment, spectroscopic data, and DFT calculations, we propose a mechanism that accounts for the observed chemo- and regioselectivity.

In this study a novel, effective and recoverable Cu(II)-catalyst was synthesized by incorporating of Cu(OAc)(2) within ethanolamine-triazine derivative (TAETA) attached to chitosan (Chs)-functionalized gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles [MNP@Chs/TAETACu(II)]. It was characterized by different techniques such as FT-IR, EDS, ICP, TEM, TGA and VSM. The as-prepared nanocomposite demonstrated high oxidation activity and desired selectivity in the aerobic oxidation of structurally diverse set of benzyl alcohols. Spectral results and leaching experiments revealed that this magnetically recoverable heterogeneous catalyst preserved its structure after it was reused several times. This protocol offers some beneficial features such as the use of oxygen as an ideal oxidant, stability of nanocomplex, easily catalyst separation by using an external magnetic field and efficient recycling as well as the lack of by-products. Background. International studies prove the high burden of mental illnesses among refugees. Postmigration stressors in the country of refugemay affect themental health and result in depression. Objectives. The study examines whether postmigration stressors are associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adult refugees in Germany. Methods. Secondary data analysis based on cross-sectional data of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees 2016 (N= 4465) that is representative for Germany. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with binary logistic regression models to examine associations between depression and sociodemographic, postmigration, and psychosocial factors. Results. Depressive symptoms show 19.4% of the surveyed refugees. Almost all selected postmigration stressors are significantly associated with depression after adjustment for sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Unemployment (aOR= 1.48 [1.04-2.12]), loneliness (aOR= 1.14 [1.10-1.18]), and a rejected or undecided asylum application (aOR= 1.34 [1.06-1.70]) increase the odds of depressive symptoms, whereas asylum interviews (aOR= 0.71 [0.56-0.91]) and higher housing satisfaction (aOR= 0.94 [0.91-0.98]) lower the odds of depression. Conclusions. Postmigration stress is associated with the occurrence of depressive symptoms. Sociopolitical interventions considering stressful and protective factors of the postmigration phase can reduce the burden of mental disorders in refugee populations.

A method for in situ photografting during direct laser writing by two-photon polymerization is presented. The technique serves as a powerful approach to the formation of covalent bonds between 3D photoresist structures and thermoplastic surfaces. By leveraging the same laser for both pattern generation and localized surface reactions, crosslinking between the bulk photoresist and thermoplastic surface is achieved during polymerization. When applied to in-channel direct laser writing for microfluidic device fabrication, the process yields exceptionally strong adhesion and robust bond interfaces that can withstand pressure gradients as high as 7 MPa through proper channel design, photoinitiator selection, and processing conditions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic and carcinogenic. 16 PAHs as priority pollutants listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency were usually monitored. Therefore, multiple potentially toxic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are not monitored. In this study, atmospheric particulate matter samples from Beijing were analyzed using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight (GC x GC-TOF) mass spectrometry. The FT-ICR data detected high molecular weight PAHs, alkylated PAHs (APAHs) and heteroatom PAHs. The GC x GC-TOF data tentatively identified 386 PACs in five categories of identification confidence. Twenty-one spectra in the unknown class were manually resolved. Eighty-two PACs with high identification confidence were proposed for further research. The identities of five PAHs and five APAHs that are currently not regulated were confirmed using available standards and quantified in some samples. Some of these PACs, such as dibenzo[a,e]pyrene (C22H14) and 1-methylpyrene (C17H12), should be of concern because of their contamination levels and the high toxicities of themselves and/or their derivatives. This study highlights the possibility of expanding the traditional lists of PAHs to improve pollution control and risk assessment accuracy.
