Houttuynia essential oil (HEO) has excellent antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and other pharmacological effects, but the lack of effective analytical methods to quantify HEO in plasma has hindered its better clinical monitoring. Houttuynine (Hou) is one of the main active ingredients and quality control substances of HEO, so the pharmacokinetic study of HEO could be conducted by determining Hou blood concentration. Hou is active and not stable in plasma, which makes its blood concentration difficult to measure. In this work, a novel liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for Hou determination in rat blood was established that involves Hou being derivatized with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to form a stable compound to prevent degradation. Herein, p-Tolualdehyde-2,4-dinitrophenylphenylhydrazone was selected as an internal standard substance and the LC-MS/MS method was evaluated for selectivity, precision, accuracy, calibration limit, matrix effect, recovery, and stability. Good linearity (r(2) = 0.998) was reached in the range of 2-2000 ng/mL, and the lower limit of quantification of Hou was determined to be 2 ng/mL. The mean intra-assay accuracy ranged from 77.7% to 115.6%, whereas the intra-assay precision (relative standard deviation, RSD) was below 11.42%. The matrix effect value for Hou in rat plasma was greater than 75%, and for the internal standard (IS) it was 104.56% +/- 3.62%. The extraction recovery of Hou were no less than 90%, and for the IS it was 96.50% +/- 4.68%. Our method is sensitive and reliable and has been successfully applied to the pharmacokinetic analysis of Hou in rats given HEO via gavage and injection.

Voltammetric sensor using a symmetrical derivative of anthrone3 (1,7-diamino-3,9-dibutyl benzo[1,2,3-de:4,5,6-d’e’]diquinoline-2,8(3H,9H)-dione) (SPE-A) has been developed as a probe for Hg(II) ions. Performance of the probe as screen-printed electrode modified with the receptor (SPE-A) has been compared with anthrone3 in solution phase, using 1:1 water-acetonitrile solvent system. Anthrone3 displayed an electrochemically quasi-reversible nature in voltammograms with both the systems and is presented as a novel disposable voltammetric sensor for mercury ions. Upon interaction with cations, both the electrode systems showed sensitivity towards Hg2+ ions with a lower detection limit of 0.61 mu M. The magnitude of the voltammetric current with the SPE-A exhibited three times the current obtained with a bare glassy carbon electrode (GC). Kinetic performance of the SPE-A electrode is better than the GC electrode. The morphological studies indicate reusability of the electrodes.

Purpose: To synthesize and characterize some new gabapentin Schiff base derivatives, and to assess their antibacterial, antioxidant and antiepileptic activities. Methods: Four Schiff base derivatives of gabapentin, termed G1, G2, G3 and G4, were synthesized by condensation with benzoin, vanillin, acetophenone, and benzophenone, respectively. Their chemical identities were established by FTIR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR techniques. The new compounds were screened for antibacterial activity using agar well method, antioxidant activity by DPPH assay, and anticonvulsant activity against pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced seizures in mice. Results: All the compounds showed antibacterial activity against the test strains to variable degrees, while the parent drug did not exhibit antibacterial activity. The zones of inhibition of compound G2 against Micrococcus luteus (36.2 +/- 1.0 mm) and Serratia marcescens (28.2 +/- 1.0 mm), and of compound G4 against Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (36.8 +/- 1.0 mm) were larger compared to the standard drug, doxycycline, exhibiting zones of inhibition 28.2 +/- 1.3, 28.2 +/- 0.9 and 20.0 +/- 0.9 mm, respectively. In addition, compounds G1 and G2 possessed significantly greater (p < 0.05) radical scavenging activity (82.3 +/- 1.8 and 92.3 +/- 2.2 %, respectively) than the precursor drug, gabapentin (63.2 +/- 2.6 %). The seizure scores for compounds GI (0.7 +/- 0.06) and G2 (0.9 +/- 0.07) were comparable (p > 0.05) with gabapentin (0.8 +/- 0.06), while compounds G3 and G4 were less active (p < 0.05) than gabapentin. Conclusion: Compounds G1 and G2 exhibit good antibacterial and antioxidant activities while retaining the anticonvulsant activity of the parent drug, gabapentin, thus making them suitable candidates for further development for the treatment of neurodegenerative pathologies associated with bacterial infections. Fe3O4@SiO2@(CH2)(3)-urea-quinoline sulfonic acid chloride, as a novel and efficient nanomagnetic catalyst bearing urea linkers, was designed, synthesized and then fully characterized by using various techniques. To investigate the catalytic activity of the described catalyst, it was used for the synthesis of coumarin containing 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs), through a condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes, 4-hydroxycoumarin, and ammonium acetate under solvent-free conditions. This procedure includes important aspects like simple procedure, simplicity of product isolation using water, decreasing the temperature of reaction, disuse of solvent, high to excellent yields, environmentally benign reaction conditions and short reaction times. Also, the presented catalyst was recycled and reused for at least five times with only a negligible decrease in its catalytic activity. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread organic contaminants in the environment, much being accumulated in soils. Although their concentrations in large cities have been studied, their levels in small cities were less studied. This study determined the concentrations, distributions, and sources of 16 USEPA priority PAHs (legacy PAHs) and 6 emerging PAHs in urban soils of four small cities. A total of 100 soil samples were collected in Florida, USA. The average Sigma 16-PAHs in urban soils of Clay county, Ocala, Pensacola, and West Palm Beach were 1821, 2748, 3115 and 4055 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Based on benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP-EQ), the 7 USEPA carcinogenic PAHs (7cPAHs) and 3 emerging carcinogenic PAHs (3cPAHs) in urban soils in Clay County averaged 223 and 3703, Ocala 319 and 4521, Pensacola 302 and 5423, and West Palm Beach 449 and 5916 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Although Sigma 7cPAHs in 87-89% of samples were lower than the Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs) for industrial sites at 700 mu g kg(-1), Sigma 3cPAHs were 13-18 times greater than Sigma 7cPAHs. Based on the PMF model and molecular diagnostic ratios, soil PAHs were dominated by similar sources in small cities, mainly from pyrogenic sources including biomass, coal and coke combustion and vehicle emissions. Since the discovery of aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomenon, various stimuli-responsive materials have been rapidly developed. However, the development of self-assembled amphiphilic light-responsive materials in aqueous solution needs to be solved urgently. In this work, three new amphiphilic tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives (TPE-1, TPE-2 and TPE-3) with AIE properties and photochromism were synthesized and investigated. Owing to the different electron-donating abilities of the three groups attached to TPE units, the TPE-1, TPE-2 and TPE-3 displayed blue-green, yellow-green, and orange fluorescence emission in the aggregation state respectively. Furthermore, ordered nanoparticles formed via self-assembly in aqueous solution showed interesting photocyclization behaviors, which lead to fluorescence quenching under ultraviolet light irradiation (lambda = 365 nm). Therefore, the compounds can be used as anti-counterfeiting ink in the information encryption due to their amphiphilicity and photo-responsiveness. This work contributes new members to the amphiphilic light-responsive materials family and demonstrates the potential for applications in the fields of optical information storage, information security protection, and erase/rewrite systems.

10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

Fe3O4@SiO2-Pr@L-proline magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and their efficiency as nanocatalyst for the synthesis of new derivatives of bis dapsone derived dihydropyridines via one-pot three-component condensation reaction of various aromatic aldehydes, dimedone and dapsone in aqueous media was investigated. The products were characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR and CHNS analysis. These bis-drugs present high antibacterial activities against both gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis) bacteria, which are in general more sensitive to compounds with halogen or hydroxyl functional groups.

Although considerable progress has been achieved in organic electroluminescence (EL) fields based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect emitters, highly efficient and multifunctional blue fluorophores with the AIE effect are still limited. In this work, a simple blue fluorescent molecule 3,4-diphenyl-5-(4′-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole (TPETAZ) with the evident properties of AIE has been designed and synthesized based on tetraphenylethylene-triazole hybrid. The AIE-active molecule TPETAZ can act as both intrinsic blue light-emitting and electron-transporting layer in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Nondoped Device I with TmPyPB layer exhibits a maximal external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.4%, a maximum luminance (L) of 1020 cd m(-2), and maximal EL emission peak of 468 nm. Even though Device II without a TmPyPB layer exhibited excellent performance, the maximal EQE was observed to be 2.0%, indicating a decrease of only 18% when compared with that of Device I. However, the maximal EL emission peak remains almost unchanged (similar to 470 nm). Furthermore, efficient doped Device III can be obtained by doping the host with TPETAZ as the blue light-emitting material. A maximal EQE of 4.1% was obtained, which was greater than those of Devices I and II by 42% and 52%, respectively; this can be attributed to the effective recombination of electron and hole carriers. This work provides a valuable strategy for designing highly efficient multifunctional blue EL AIE-active fluorophores, which have significant potential for practical applications.

Objective: To assess the antidiabetic effect of Opuntia dillenii seed oil on rats with diabetes mellitus. Methods: A rat diabetes model was established by intraperitoneal injection of rats with 50 mg/kg streptozotocin. Thirty albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups: the diabetic control group and normal control group were treated only with distilled water, two diabetic groups received 1 and 2 mL/kg of oil per day, respectively, for 30 days and one diabetic group received 2 mg/kg of glibenclamide. In addition, blood glucose was determined weekly. Body weight, average daily food, water intake and urinary volume of each animal were determined before and after the treatment period. After the treatment period, hepatic glycogen was determined using the anthrone reagent, and glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid were estimated using common clinical diagnostic kits. Results: Oral intake of the oil at 1 and 2 mL/kg for the diabetic animals significantly diminished blood glucose, glycosuria, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and uric acid, accompanied by a noticeable elevation in the amount of hepatic glycogen in comparison with the diabetic control group. Similarly, Opuntia dillenii seed oil significantly increased the food intake and decreased the urinary volume per day in treated rats of the same groups in comparison with the period before the treatment intervention and attenuated body weight loss in the diabetic rats. Moreover, this effect of the oil was dose dependent. On the other hand, the oil did not affect their need for water. Conclusions: The results show that Opuntia dillenii seed oil has a very important antidiabetic effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hence, we suggest it as a preventive control of diabetes mellitus.
