Herein, we disclose a unique directing effect of 9-substituted triptycenes in electrophilic substitution to achieve the regioselective functionalization of the triptycene core. The Hirshfeld population analysis was adopted to predict the selectivity in electrophilic substitution. TMS and t-Bu groups were found to considerably accelerate the reaction at C2 positions to produce C3symmetric isomers. Correlation between distortion and charge distribution within benzene rings was systematically examined.

Rationale Mummification is one of the defining customs of ancient Egypt. The nuances of the embalming procedure and the composition of the embalming mixtures have attracted the attention of scientists and laypeople for a long time. Modern analytical tools make mummy studies more efficient. Methods Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (GCxGC/HRMS) with complementary ionization methods (electron ionization, positive chemical ionization, and electron capture negative ionization [ECNI]) with a Pegasus GC-HRT+4D instrument was used to identify embalming components in the mummy from the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts acquired in 1913 in London at the de Rustafjaell sale. The mummy dates back to the late Predynastic period (direct accelerator mass spectrometry-dating 3356-3098 bc), being one of the oldest in the world. Results The results showed the complexity of the embalming mixtures that were already in use 5000 years ago. Several hundred organic compounds were identified in the mummy samples. Various types of hydrocarbons (triterpanes, steranes, isoprenoid, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) prove the presence of petroleum products. Iodinated compounds detected using ECNI define oils of marine origin, whereas esters of palmitic acid indicate the use of beeswax. The nature of the discovered components of conifer tar proves that the preliminary processing of conifer resins involved heating. GCxGC/HRMS also allowed a number of modern contaminants (phthalates, organophosphates, and even DDT) to be identified. Conclusions Application of a powerful GCxGC/HRMS technique with complementary ionization methods allowed significant widening of the range of organic compounds used for mummification that could be identified. The complexity of the embalming mixtures supports the hypothesis of the high social status of the child made on the basis of the preliminary study of the mummy.

Gut microbiota bioconversion of polyphenols in predigested mango ‘Ataulfo’ peel was studied using a validated, dynamic in vitro human colon model (TIM-2) with faecal microbial inoculum. Dried peels were predigested with enzymatic treatment, followed by TIM-2 fermentation (72 h). Samples were taken at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h and analyzed by HPLC-QToF. Derivatives of hydroxyphenylpropionic, hydroxyphenylacetic and hydroxybenzoic acids, as well as, pyrogallol were the main polyphenols identified. These metabolites might derivate from flavonoid (flavanols and flavonols), gallate and gallotannin biotransformation. Despite the high content of ellagic acid in mango peel, low amounts were detected in TIM-2 samples due to transformation into urolythins A and C, mainly. Xanthone and benzophenone derivatives, specific to mango, remained after the colonic biotransformation, contrary to flavonoids, which completely disappeared. In conclusion, microbial-derived metabolites, such as xanthone and benzophenone derivatives, among others, are partially stable after colonic fermentation, and thus have the potential to contribute to mango peel bioactivity.

Copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized via thermal decomposition and applied as a reusable and green catalyst in the synthesis of functionalized 4H-pyran derivatives using malononitrile, an aromatic aldehyde, and a beta-ketoester in ethanol at room temperature. The nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR, EDX, SEM, TGA, and DTG analysis. The catalyst was recovered from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnet and decanting the mixture. Recycled catalyst was reused for several times without significant loss in its activity. Running the one-pot three-component reaction at room temperature, using a green solvent under environmentally friendly reaction conditions, ease of catalyst recovery and recyclability, no need for column chromatography and good to excellent yields are advantages of this protocol.

Several ethylenedioxy-bridged bisarenes with a variety of type and number of aryl groups were synthesized to study non-covalent dispersion-driven inter- and intramolecular aryl-aryl interactions in the solid state and gas phase. Intramolecular interactions are preferably found in the gas phase. DFT calculations with and without dispersion correction show larger interacting aromatic groups increase the stabilization energy of folded conformers and decrease the intermolecular centroid-centroid distance. Single-molecule structures generally adopt folded conformations with short intramolecular aryl-aryl contacts. Gas electron diffraction experiments were performed exemplarily for 1-(pentafluorophenoxy)-2-(phenoxy)ethane. A new procedure for structure refinement was developed to deal with the conformational complexity of such molecules. The results are an experimental confirmation of the existence of folded conformations of this molecule with short intramolecular aryl-aryl distances in the gas phase. Solid-state structures are dominated by stretched structures without intramolecular aryl-aryl interactions but interactions with neighboring molecules.

Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy. Herein, an interesting palladium-catalyzed procedure for the direct carbonylative thiomethylation of aromatic amine derivatives with 4-methylthio-2-butanone is developed. Using 4-methylthio-2-butanone as (methylthio) transfer agent, a variety of corresponding thioesters are obtained with moderate to good yields under base-free condition. In addition, good functional group tolerance can be observed.

During the past few decades, fabrication of functional rotaxane-branched dendrimers has become one of the most attractive yet challenging topics within supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the successful fabrication of a family of new rotaxane-branched dendrimers containing up to 21 platinum atoms and 42 photosensitizer moieties through an efficient and controllable divergent approach. Notably, the photosensitization efficiencies of these rotaxane-branched dendrimers gradually increased with the increase of dendrimer generation. For example, third-generation rotaxane-branched dendrimer PG3 revealed 13.3-fold higher O-1(2) generation efficiency than its corresponding monomer AN. The enhanced O-1(2) generation efficiency was attributed to the enhancement of intersystem crossing (ISC) through the simple and efficient incorporation of multiple heavy atoms and photosensitizer moieties on the axles and wheels of the rotaxane units, respectively, which has been validated by UV-visible and fluorescence techniques, time-dependent density functional theory calculations, photolysis model reactions, and apparent activation energy calculations. Therefore, we develop a new promising platform of rotaxane-branched dendrimers for the preparation of effective photosensitizers.

A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88% yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3 : 1.0, a temperature of 75-100 degrees C, and a reaction time of 4 h. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-alpha-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4% yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.
