A high proportion of the total microplastic (MP) load in the marine environment has been identified as microfibers (MFs), with polyester (PET) and polyamide (PA) typically found in the highest abundance. The potential for negative environmental impacts from MPs may be dependent on their degree of degradation in the environment, which is influenced by both intrinsic properties (polymer type, density, size, additive chemicals) and extrinsic environmental parameters. Most polymer products break down slowly through a combination of environmental processes, but UV degradation can be a significant source of degradation. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of UV irradiance on the degradation of natural (wool) and synthetic (PET and PA) MFs. Degradation of MFs was conducted in seawater under environmentally relevant accelerated exposure conditions using simulated sunlight. After 56 days of UV exposure, PA primarily exhibited changes in surface morphology with no significant fragmentation observed. PET and wool fibers exhibited both changes in surface morphology and fragmentation into smaller particles. A range of molecular degradation products were identified in seawater leachates after UV exposure, with increasing abundance over the duration of the experiment. Furthermore, a variety of additive chemicals were shown to leach from the MFs into seawater. While some of these chemicals were also susceptible to UV degradation and some are expected to biodegrade rapidly, others may be persistent and contribute to the overall load of chemical pollution in the marine environment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread organic contaminants in the environment, much being accumulated in soils. Although their concentrations in large cities have been studied, their levels in small cities were less studied. This study determined the concentrations, distributions, and sources of 16 USEPA priority PAHs (legacy PAHs) and 6 emerging PAHs in urban soils of four small cities. A total of 100 soil samples were collected in Florida, USA. The average Sigma 16-PAHs in urban soils of Clay county, Ocala, Pensacola, and West Palm Beach were 1821, 2748, 3115 and 4055 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Based on benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP-EQ), the 7 USEPA carcinogenic PAHs (7cPAHs) and 3 emerging carcinogenic PAHs (3cPAHs) in urban soils in Clay County averaged 223 and 3703, Ocala 319 and 4521, Pensacola 302 and 5423, and West Palm Beach 449 and 5916 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Although Sigma 7cPAHs in 87-89% of samples were lower than the Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs) for industrial sites at 700 mu g kg(-1), Sigma 3cPAHs were 13-18 times greater than Sigma 7cPAHs. Based on the PMF model and molecular diagnostic ratios, soil PAHs were dominated by similar sources in small cities, mainly from pyrogenic sources including biomass, coal and coke combustion and vehicle emissions. In this report, SO3H-functionalized Carbon nanoparticles (Pine-SO3H) with high acid density have been synthesized by the thermal treatment of sulfuric acid with Pine-Cone as carbon-based at 180 degrees C in a sealed autoclave in a one-step procedure. The resulted Nanocatalyst was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD, FE-SEM and elemental analysis (EA). The result of characterization was shown that the carbon-based acid is amorphous with polycyclic aromatic carbon sheets attached plentiful -OH, -COOH, and -SO3H groups. The catalytic activities of Pine-SO3H was investigated in the highly efficient synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c] pyrazole, amino-benzochromenes, amidoalkyl naphthol and 5-arylidene-2,4-thiazolidinedione derivatives. The application of Pine-SO3H in the synthesis offers several advantages such as simple procedure with an easy work-up, recoverable catalyst, mild condition, eco-friendliness, excellent yields, short reaction times and use of an inexpensive catalyst.

Background: Aloe vera is commonly used in the primary health care of human beings since time immemorial. It is an herb widely used in various traditional systems of medicine worldwide. Systematic and scientific investigation on A. vera as a medicinal plant has drawn considerable attention, and many laboratories are involved in isolation, characterization and evaluation of phytoconstituents for their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the phytochemical, biological and medicinal attributes of A. vera against various diseases with special emphasis on underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: PubMed, EBOSCO host, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane library databases were utilized to search literature published between1977 and 2019 (fill March). Major keywords used in various combinations included: Aloe vera, phytochemistry, metabolism, pharmacological activity, prevention, treatment, health, disease, in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies. Results: Various biological and pharmacological activities of A. vera, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and skin-protective and wound-healing responses, have been attributed to the presence of many active compounds, including anthraquinones, anthrones, chromones, flavonoids, amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Conclusion: Based on various preclinical studies, A. vera constituents have enormous potential to prevent and treat various diseases. Randomized clinical trials are needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of this unique medicinal plant.

Herein, we report the development of a tailor-made fluoride-based heterogeneous catalyst, POLITAG-F, for the waste-minimized continuous production of cyanohydrin silyl ethers. The careful designing of the polymeric support and the choice of fluoride ion as the anionic species resulted in the improvement of catalytic efficiency and allowed the effective conversion of different carbonyls (aldehydes, ketones, and unsaturated ketones). The POLITAG-F catalyst, employed under flow conditions, led to the conversion of large amounts (over 100 mmol) of the substrate with a productivity of 0.1 mmol min(-1). In addition, flow conditions allowed to minimize the waste production reaching an associated E-factor value of 0.04. An exhaustive evaluation of the environmental impact of our protocol has been reported by considering several green metrics (process mass intensity, atom economy, and reaction mass efficiency) and also the benign index and the safety hazard index of the process.

Eggshell as a solid waste was loaded on a nano-Fe3O4 surface. Then, in one step, it (Fe3O4@eggshell) was converted to Fe3O4@Ca-3(PO4)(2) as a nano-magnetic, green, cheap, and environmentally friendly catalyst. Techniques such as FT-IR, VSM, FESEM, TEM, EDX, XRD, and TGA were used to characterize the as-synthesized catalyst. The catalytic activity of Fe3O4@Ca-3(PO4)(2) was evaluated in the synthesis of 1,2,4,5-tetra-substituted imidazole derivatives through a one-pot multicomponent reaction. The design of the experiment as a systematic statistical approach was used to obtain the optimum point of the reaction condition so that 0.05 g of the as-synthesized catalyst and 94.77 degrees C were the best condition (which provides 90% yield for the benchmark reaction). Then, 1,2,4,5-tetra-substituted imidazole derivatives in the optimum condition were synthesized with very low reaction times in good yields. The as-prepared catalyst was retrieved through a magnet and used several times without significant loss of catalytic activity.

A di(o-tolyl)borylgold complex was synthesized via the metathesis reaction of a gold alkoxide with tetra(o-tolyl)diborane(4). The resulting diarylborylgold complex exhibited a Lewis acidic boron center and a characteristic visible absorption that arises from its HOMO-LUMO excitation, which is narrower than that of a previously reported dioxyborylgold complex. The diarylborylgold complex reacted with isocyanide in a stepwise fashion to afford single- and double-insertion products and a C-C coupled product. Reactions of this diarylborylgold complex with C = O/N double bond species furnished addition products under concomitant formation of Au-C and B-O/N bonds, which suggests nucleophilic reactivity of the gold metal center. DFT calculations provided details of the underlying reaction mechanism, which involves an initial coordination of the C = O/N bond to the boron vacant p-orbital of the diarylboryl ligand followed by a migration of the gold atom from the tetracoordinate sp(3)-hybridized boron center, which is analogous to the reactivity of the conventional sp(3)-hybridized borate species. The DFT calculations also suggested a stepwise mechanism for the reaction of this diarylborylgold complex with isocyanide, which afforded three different reaction products depending on the applied reaction conditions.

Series of novel N-benzyl derivatives of 6-aminoflavone (9a-n) were synthesized and evaluated for anticancer and topoisomerase II enzyme inhibition activity. All the synthesized compounds were screened for in vitro anticancer activity against human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and human lung cancer cell line (A-549). Among the synthesized compounds, 9f and 9g were found to be the most potent anticancer agents against human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) with IC50 values of 9.35 mu M and 9.58 mu M, respectively. Compounds 9b, 9c and 9n exhibited promising anticancer activity against human lung cancer cell line (A-549) with 43.71%, 46.48% and 44.26% inhibition at the highest concentration of 10 mu M, respectively. Compounds 9c, 9f and 9g have ability to inhibit the topoisomerase II enzyme. Compound 9f showed most potent topoisomerase II enzyme inhibition activity with IC50 value of 12.11 mu M. Further, these compounds have a high potential to be developed as a promising topoisomerase II inhibitors.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (prototype system ZIF-8) supported on the Fe3O4@TiO2@ILs magnetic nanostructure (Fe3O4@TiO2@ILs-ZIF-8) was first synthesized and it showed high catalytic activity for the one-pot synthesis of benzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine derivatives.
