Under the acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) reaction condition, the C3-vinyl groups of cinchona alkaloids readily react with each other to form a C-C bond. A novel type of cinchona alkaloid polymers was synthesized from dimeric cinchona squaramides using the Hoveyda-Grubbs’ second-generation catalysts (HG(2)) by means of ADMET reaction. The chiral polymers, containing cinchona squaramide moieties in their main chains, were subsequently employed as catalysts for the enantioselective Michael reaction to give the corresponding chiral adducts in high yields with excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. Both enantiomers from the asymmetric Michael reaction were distinctively prepared while using the polymeric catalysts, possessing pseudoenantiomeric structures. The catalysts were readily recovered from the reaction mixture and recycled several times due to the insolubility of the cinchona-based squaramide polymers.

An efficient and clean method was developed for the three components, one-pot synthesis of pyrimidinone/thione derivatives using cyclopentanone, variety of aromatic aldehydes, and urea/thiourea by using cyanuric chloride catalyzed Biginelli-type reaction. The reactions proceed under room temperature in presence of cyanuric catalyst in acetonitrile solvent. Under similar conditions, urea/thiourea exhibited similar behavior and aliphatic aldehydes showed lower reactivity than aromatic aldehydes.

The selective oxidation of C-H bond is critical for feedstock manufacturing in chemical industry. Current strategies typically involve the use of oxygen or peroxide as the oxidation reagent under high temperature, which sets severe challenges in production sustainability and industrial safety. Herein, we demonstrate an environmental-friendly and safe electrocatalytic strategy for the selective oxidation of benzyl group to ketones at ambient conditions, while using water as the sole oxygen source. Water addition reduces the onset potential of anodic C-H oxidation, and produces 1-tetralone with satisfying conversion and excellent ketone to alcohol ratio. Layered MnO2 catalysts (with rich oxygen vacancies) further adjust the water affinity and facilitate the oxidation, leading to a significantly improved faradaic efficiency.

Rubrene is the most widely used triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) emitter for NIR-to-vis photon upconversion (UC), however, strong singlet fission (SF) in the solid films quenches its emission and hampers practical TTA-UC applications. Herein, the issue was addressed by decorating the rubrene with sterically demanding 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl side-moieties at the periphery and the core to result in 40-fold enhancement of the emission quantum yield. Nevertheless, the sterically crowded rubrenes were found to exhibit lower sensitized UC performance compared to the conventional rubrene, which was ascribed to inefficient triplet energy transfer from a sensitizer and poor TTA (for the core-modified rubrene only). By exploiting the distinct feature of rubrenes to simultaneously express both SF and TTA in the solid films, their TTA efficiency was assessed independently from TET in the sensitizer-free films. The results implied a trade-off between suppressed SF and enhanced TTA in the rubrene emitters, which could be addressed via careful selection of the degree of sterical hindrance and linking position of the side-moieties. Thorough analysis of the prompt and delayed fluorescence revealed that the bulky side-moieties at the periphery do not impede TTA, i.e., it is as efficient as that of unsubstituted rubrene, whereas these moieties linked directly to the core suppress TTA dramatically. The current study unveils an advantage of the peripheral linking vs. core linking pattern of rubrene emitters, thereby providing valuable insights for their rational modification towards improved NIR-to-vis UC efficiency in the solid state.

Development of a low-cost, environmentally benign and robust catalyst for multipurpose industrially relevant organic transformations is highly desirable for the sustainable future of chemical industries. A hybrid cobalt doped-cerium oxide nanocatalyst (Co@CeO2NC) was prepared via simple coprecipitation method using water as the solvent. The characterization of Co@CeO2NC was performed using different techniques such as XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, EDAX-mapping, BET, and XPS analysis. The structural characterization of the prepared sample by XRD and XPS analysis revealed the presence of the mixed phase of cobalt oxide and cobalt doped-cerium oxide as a hybrid (Co@CeO2NC). Industrially relevant organic transformations such as (i) nitrile formation using aldehyde with hydroxyl amine hydrochloride, (ii) reductive amination of aldehydes to form tertiary N,N-dimethyl amines, and (iii) direct acetylation of alcohols/amines with acetic acid were achieved in an excellent manner using Co@CeO2NC hybrid as the multifunctional catalyst. Excellent catalytic activity of Co@CeO2NC was noticed for the conversion of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde to 4-chlorobenzonitrile with 99% conversion and 99% selectivity and 100% conversion of benzaldehyde to N,N-dimethylbenzylamine using DMF as NMe2 source, reductant, and solvent. Moreover, acetylation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol and 2-methyl aniline gave excellent conversion and selectivity toward the formation of -O and -N acetyl. The scope of the Co@CeO2NC was further evaluated for other aldehydes, alcohols, and amines with an excellent conversion and high selectivity.

For the first time the occurrence of 25 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including; 11 personal care products (PCPs), six phthalate ester plasticizers (PEPs) and eight organophosphorus flame retardants (OPERs) was investigated in 72 water samples obtained from five bays in the Uganda sector of Lake Victoria. In addition, an assessment of the potential ecotoxic risk of the target OMPs to aquatic organisms was conducted. Water samples were analyzed for the target OMPs using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). All the target PCPs were found in all the water samples with the exception of musk ketone and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Triclosan (89-1400 ng L-1), benzophenone (36 -1300 ng L-1), and 4-methylbenzylidine camphor (21-1500 ng L-1) were the most predominant PCPs. All the six plasticizers were found in all the water samples with dibutyl phthalate (350-16 000 ng L-1), and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (210-23 000 ng L-1) detected at the highest concentrations. Five OPERs out of the eight targeted were found in all the water samples. Tricresyl phosphate (25-8100 ng L-1), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (24-6500 ng L-1) and triphenyl phosphate (54-4300 ng L-1) were the most dominant OPERs. The highest concentrations of OMPs were recorded in Murchison and Thurston Bays, presumably due to industrial wastewater effluents from the highly industrialized localities of the two Bays. Ecotoxicological risk assessment showed that PCPs (triclosan, musk ketone, and 4-MBC), plasticizers (dibutyl phthalate, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and OPERs (tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate and tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate) pose a high ecotoxic risk to lives of aquatic organisms (risk quotients, RQ > 1). MgO has been shown to catalyze an almost quantitative hydrogen transfer from 2-octanol as the hydrogen donor to benzophenone to form benzhydrol, a useful intermediate product in the pharmaceutical industry. The hydrogen transfer from a series of alcohols to the carbonyl group of benzophenone, its ten derivatives, four polycyclic ketones, and 2-naphthyl phenyl ketone was carried out in liquid (LP) or vapor phase (VP). The dependence of reactivity on the structure of the hydrogen donor, reaction temperature, donor-acceptor ratio, amount of catalyst, and the type and position of substituents has been established. For both reaction modes, optimal conditions for selective synthesis of the alcohols were determined and side reactions were investigated. The results indicate that the reactivity of the ketone is suppressed by the presence of a methyl substituent in the ortho position to a much greater extent in LP mode. A scale-up was demonstrated in the liquid phase mode.

We present an efficient and versatile visible light-driven methodology to transform aryl aldehydes and ketones chemoselectively either to alcohols or to pinacol products with CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots as photocatalysts. Thiophenols were used as proton and hydrogen atom donors and as hole traps for the excited quantum dots (QDs) in these reactions. The two products can be switched from one to the other simply by changing the amount of thiophenol in the reaction system. The core/shell QD catalysts are highly efficient with a turn over number (TON) larger than 4 X 10(4) and 4 X 10(5) for the reduction to alcohol and pinacol formation, respectively, and are very stable so that they can be recycled for at least 10 times in the reactions without significant loss of catalytic activity. The additional advantages of this method include good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, the allowance of selectively reducing aldehydes in the presence of ketones, and easiness for large scale reactions. Reaction mechanisms were studied by quenching experiments and a radical capture experiment, and the reasons for the switchover of the reaction pathways upon the change of reaction conditions are provided.

In this study, we successfully synthesized two types of meso/microporous carbon materials through the carbonization and potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation for two different kinds of hyper-crosslinked polymers of TPE-CPOP1 and TPE-CPOP2, which were synthesized by using Friedel-Crafts reaction of tetraphenylethene (TPE) monomer with or without cyanuric chloride in the presence of AlCl3 as a catalyst. The resultant porous carbon materials exhibited the high specific area (up to 1100 m(2) g(-1)), total pore volume, good thermal stability, and amorphous character based on thermogravimetric (TGA), N-2 adsoprtion/desorption, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analyses. The as-prepared TPE-CPOP1 after thermal treatment at 800 degrees C (TPE-CPOP1-800) displayed excellent CO2 uptake performance (1.74 mmol g(-1) at 298 K and 3.19 mmol g(-1) at 273 K). Furthermore, this material possesses a high specific capacitance of 453 F g(-1) at 5 mV s(-1) comparable to others porous carbon materials with excellent columbic efficiencies for 10,000 cycle at 20 A g(-1).
