10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

Anthrone tautomerized predominantly, under the reaction conditions, into anthrol and involved in the azo coupling reaction with aryl diazonium chloride to give the corresponding azo dye. UV-Vis experiments have supported the tautomerization of anthrone and the presence of the azo dye products in the hydrazone form. Aryl amines with broad biological applications have been involved to increase the utility of the obtained products. A set of 4,4-dichloro-1,2-diazabutadienes derived from 3-nitrobenzaldehyde was prepared by the copper catalyzed reaction of the corresponding hydrazones with CCl4 in the presence of TMEDA. The structure of all products was confirmed by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra and ESI-MS. X-ray diffraction revealed Cl center dot center dot center dot O halogen binding in the crystal form for some dienes. Moreover, Br center dot center dot center dot pi and Cl center dot center dot pi types of halogen bonds are observed. A facile synthetic route was developed to prepare a surface-grafted brush layer of poly(vinyl ethers) (PVEs) directly by a radical mechanism, with the naked Li+ acting as a catalyst. Density functional theory calculations suggested that complexation of naked Li+ to VEs significantly reduced the highest unoccupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gap from 5.08 to 0.68 eV, providing a better prospect for electron transfer. The structure, morphology, and surface properties of grafted polymer layers were characterized using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic water contact angle (DCA). Moreover, ellipsometry data indicated that the thickness of the polymer brushes was in the range of 20-60 nm, which corresponds to the grafting densities of 0.65-1.15 chain/nm(2), and DCA decreased from 84.4 to 45.3 degrees. Most importantly, no hydrolysis was observed for the modified surface after 30 days of exposure to phosphate-buffered saline solution, 0.1 mol/L NaOH(eq) and 0.1 mol/L HCl(eq), demonstrating excellent hydrolysis resistance with long service life. In addition, as a proof of concept, the side hydroxyl groups of grafted PVEs provide active sites for efficient fixation of bioactive molecules, e.g., glycosaminoglycan and serum protein.

This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.

Background Non-neoplastic anal sac disorders (ASD) are frequent presentations for dogs in primary-care practice but evidence-based information on disease occurrence and risk is sparse. This study estimates prevalence, breed associations and other risk factors as well as reporting on clinical management. Methods A cohort study of dogs attending VetCompass practices between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013. Risk factor analysis used multivariable logistic regression methods. Results Of 104,212 dogs attending 110 UK practices, the 1-year period prevalence of ASD was 4.40% (95% CI: 4.22-4.57). Compared to crossbreds, six breeds showed increased odds of ASD (Cavalier King Charles spaniel, King Charles spaniel, Cockapoo, Shih-tzu, Bichon Frise and Cocker spaniel), and six breeds showed reduced odds (Labrador Retriever, Border collie, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Lurcher, German Shepherd Dog and Boxer). Brachycephalic types had 2.6 times the odds for ASD compared to dolichocephalic types. Medication prescribed for ASD included antimicrobials (n = 480, 20.24%) and analgesics (n = 284, 11.97%). Anal sacculectomy was performed in under 1% of cases. Conclusions High prevalence, strong breed predispositions and evidence of severity suggested from the antimicrobial and analgesic therapies combined with current substantial knowledge gaps identify ASD as a key research-neglected syndrome in dogs.

This study aimed to evaluate the presence of ultraviolet filters (UV-Fs), benzotriazoles, pyrethroids and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in freshwater and wastewater from the northern Antarctic Peninsula region. All water samples analyzed contained UV-Fs residues and high concentrations were detected in anthropogenic impacted sites (< LOD up to 1300 ng/L). Likewise, benzotriazoles were detected in all water samples (< LOQ-920 ng/L). Regarding suspended particulate matter, almost all UV-Fs and all benzotriazoles were measured at concentrations ranging from < LOQ to 33 mu g/g dry weight. Pyrethroids were also detected (< LOQ-250 ng/L) and their presence implies the existence of a gateway to the Antarctica Peninsula from other regions. The data confirmed the presence of PFASs (< LOD-7500 ng/L) in this area, in agreement with previous studies. In light of these results, extended monitoring in Antarctica should be carried out to perform a reliable environmental risk assessment leading to propose recommendations to minimize the anthropic impact. We report detailed Rainan spectra for the neutral and radical anion forms of benzophenone, fluorenone, 2,2′-bipyridyl, 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-dipyridyl, and anthracene. Density functional theory (DFT) predictions for the Raman spectra of these molecules give additional insight into the assignment of each vibrational mode. While the use of DFT has been problematic in quantifying the thermochemistry of highly delocalized radicals, we find that DFT-predicted spectra using the popular B3LYP functional are in excellent agreement with the observed Raman spectra. In the case of the two bipyridyl compounds, the Raman spectra allowed us to conclude that the cis form of the radical anion complexed to a sodium cation was the preferred configuration. Benzophenone and fluorenone radical anions gave a significantly weakened C=O bond stretching vibrational frequency as expected from the population of an antibonding pi* orbital. For benzophenone, the C=O vibration dropped from 1659 to 1403 cm(-1) upon reduction. Similarly, fluorenone showed a C=O vibration observed at 1719 cm(-1) for the neutral form that decreased to 1522 cm(-1) for the radical anion. The structurally rigid anthracene showed relatively smaller Raman band shifts upon single-electron reduction as the pi* orbital is more equally delocalized on the entire structure. In total, we correlated 65 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for the neutral molecules with an overall error of 7.1 cm(-1) (root-mean-square errors (RMSEs)) and 67 DFT-predicted vibrational modes for radical anions with an overall error of 9.9 cm(-1). These comparisons between theory and experiment are another example to demonstrate the power of DFT in predicting the identity and geometry of molecules using Raman spectroscopy.

Porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was synthesized by taking melamine and ammonium bicarbonate through single-step calcination method followed by ultrasonication to obtain exfoliated porous g-C3N4 (2D) nanosheets. Further enhancement of photocatalytic performance, g-C3N4 nanosheet (2D) was further modified with different weight percentage of (1, 3, 5, and 7) of MnO2. The introduction of alpha-MnO2 onto the g-C3N4 nanosheet establishes an interlayer channels to promote the migration of charge carriers through the valence band and conduction band of the prepared composite MnO2@g-C3N4. The transformation of photo induced charge carriers adopt the Z-scheme mechanism rather band-transfer mechanism. The accumulated photo generated electrons in conduction band of g-C3N4 is more electro negative than the potential of (O2/O2-.) and able to reduce oxygen to superoxide (O2-.) radical. At the same time, the holes in valence band of alpha-MnO2 are more electro positive than the potential of (OH-/OH.) and help in oxidate OH- to hydroxyl (OH.) radical. Among all the composites, 3 wt% MnO2 modified g-C3N4 shows the best photocatalytic oxidation efficiency towards all the aromatic alcohols. In presence of visible light, heterojuction formation, and formation of active charged species (OH. and O2-.) were mostly responsible for photocatalytic oxidation of aromatic alcohols through free radical mechanism.
