Purpose Wound healing after Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation often entails fibrosis as a foreign body reaction to the silicone plate. Poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) forms an antifouling surface that inhibits fibrosis during wound healing. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of the implantation of AGV coated with PMPC (wPMPC) versus AGV without PMPC (woPMPC) in rabbits. Methods Six New Zealand White rabbit does underwent AGV implantation in both eyes. For each rabbit, one eye was randomly selected for implantation of AGV wPMPC and a conventional AGV (woPMPC) was implanted in the contralateral eye. Gross conjunctival vascularity was compared between the two groups at the first, second, and fourth weeks after surgery. The eyes were enucleated in four weeks and subjected to staining with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson’s trichrome stain. The fibrosis and inflammation status among the eye samples were compared by measuring the thickness of the fibrotic walls and counting the number of chronic inflammatory cells around the AGV. Counting of inflammatory cells and measuring fibrotic wall thickness were done in a blinded method to eliminate observer bias. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results Gross and histological examinations revealed no toxic effects of PMPC. There were no apparent differences in overall conjunctival vascularity between the two groups at weeks 1, 2, and 4 after surgery. The average inflammatory cell counts were 14.3 5.8 per slide and 27.3 +/- 8.6 per slide in the wPMPC and woPMPC groups, respectively (p = 0.037). The average thicknesses of the fibrotic wall were 57.9 +/- 11.3 mu m and 81.5 +/- 21.3 mu m in the wPMPC and woPMPC groups, respectively (p = 0.025). Conclusion Compared to the woPMPC group, the number of inflammatory cells and fibrosis were significantly decreased in the wPMPC group.

Background: Due to the presence of several serious side effects such as erosion and bleeding in the gastric mucosal layer which are linked with Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and a lot of these adverse effects may be dangerous for life and may cause numerous mortalities, demand for new antiinflammatory and analgesic agents has become an important task in medicinal chemistry to improve therapeutic efficacy as well as safety. Method: In the search for new anti-inflammatory and analgesic molecules with greater potency, some novel indole derivatives (SK-1 to SK-9) were attained by chloroacetylation process of indole after that reaction through some aromatic aldehydes with the presence of acetic acid in absolute ethyl alcohol. IR, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR spectra were used for the structure elucidation of obtained chemical compounds. In this context, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity were evaluated for synthetically obtained new chemical compounds. Furthermore, the molecular docking studies were performed to elucidate the binding modes of synthesized ligands in the active pockets of Cox-1 / 2 enzymes. Result: Among the compounds assessed, SK-2 and SK-8 demonstrated potent analgesic & antiinflammatory activities when compared to ibuprofen and diclofenac sodium as reference drugs. Compound SK-4 has exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity while compounds SK-1 and SK-5 have shown significant analgesic action when compared to the control. Molecular docking studies indicated that SK2 compound exhibited appreciable binding affinity (-9.16 kcal/mol) towards the COX-2 enzyme and mandatory interactions for COX-2 enzyme inhibition. Conclusion: It might be established from the present study that prepared compounds are unique in terms of their structure and noticeable biological action. Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Latino children in immigrant families experience health care disparities. Text messaging interventions for this population may address disparities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a Spanish-language text messaging intervention on infant emergency department use and well care and vaccine adherence. METHODS: The Salud al Dia intervention, an educational video and interactive text messages throughout the child’s first year of life, was evaluated via randomized controlled trial conducted in an urban, academic pediatric primary care practice from February 2016 to December 2017. Inclusion criteria were publicly insured singleton infant < 2 months of age; parent age > 18, with Spanish as the preferred health care language; and at least 1 household cellular phone. Primary outcomes were abstracted from the electronic medical record at age 15 months. Intention-to-treat analyses were used. RESULTS: A total of 157 parent-child dyads were randomly assigned to Salud al Dia (n = 79) or control groups (n = 78). Among all participants, mean parent age was 29.3 years (SD: 6.2 years), mean years in the United States was 7.3 (SD: 5.3 years), and 87% of parents had limited or marginal health literacy. The incidence rate ratio for emergency department use for the control versus intervention group was 1.48 (95% confidence interval: 1.04-2.12). A greater proportion of intervention infants received 2 flu vaccine doses compared with controls (81% vs 67%; P = .04). CONCLUSIONS: This Spanish-language text messaging intervention reduced emergency department use and increased flu vaccine receipt among a population at high risk for health care disparities. Tailored text message interventions are a promising method for addressing disparities.

Chloroform, a regulated disinfection by-product in water, is often generated during chlorination disinfection treatment. However, the formation of chloroform is heavily dependent on the molecular structures of precursors. Moreover, compounds containing ketone moiety are ubiquitous in water environments. However, it is unclear if they can generate chloroform during chlorination. In this study, 14 benzophenones (BPs), efficient and widely used UV filters, with different substituents were selected to explore chloroform formation during chlorination. All 14 BPs generated chloroform, with yields dependent on their molecular structures and operational conditions. Compounds 2,2′,4,4′-tetrahydroxy-BP and benzophenone produced the highest and lowest chloroform of 0.313 and 0.013 g/g, respectively, corresponding to the fastest and slowest formation rate constants of 1.41 x 10(-1) and 2.71 x 10(-2) min(-1). Alkaline conditions and high chlorine dosages were favorable to chloroform formation. Three reactions played key roles in chloroform formation from BPs: (1) chlorine initiated Baeyer Villiger oxidation converted ketone moieties of BP molecules into esters; (2) the esters further underwent hydrolysis and formed phenolic and benzoic products; and (3) benzoic acids underwent decarboxylation and hydrolysis to form phenolic products. Subsequently, these phenolic products could further generate chloroform in the chlorination system. More importantly, BPs could generate chloroform in the ambient water matrices during practical chlorination treatment. This work emphasized the critical role of Baeyer-Villiger oxidation for chloroform formation, implying that pollutants containing aromatic ketone moieties generate chloroform during chlorination disinfection, and their potential risk should therefore be reviewed. A highly efficient and environmentally benign synthesis of N-fused heterocyclic compounds including pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine-6-one moiety is successfully achieved via a sequential four-component reaction. The process involves the formation of diversely substituted 9-nitro-1,2,3,4,7,8-hexahydro-6H-pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidin-6-ones from the reaction of Meldrum’s acid, benzaldehydes, 1,1-bis(methylthio)-2-nitroethylene and various diamines in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) as an acidic catalyst in water as a green solvent. The salient features of the present methodology are easily available starting materials, the use of water as environmentally benign solvent, simple execution, applicable to a wide range of starting materials and good to excellent yields.

Background: Colorectal familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) adenomas exhibit a uniform pathogenetic basis caused by a germline mutation in the adenomatous polyposis gene (APC), but the molecular changes leading to their development are incompletely understood. However, dysregulated apoptosis is known to substantially affect the development of colonic adenomas. One of the key regulatory proteins involved in apoptosis is apoptosis repressor with caspase recruitment domain (ARC). Methods: The expression of nuclear and cytoplasmic ARC in 212 adenomas from 80 patients was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. We also compared expression levels of ARC with the expression levels of p53, Bcl-2, COX-2, and MMR proteins. Statistical analyses were performed by Spearman’s rank correlation and linear regression test. Results: ARC was overexpressed in the nuclei and cytoplasm of most FAP adenomas investigated. Cytoplasmic ARC staining was moderately stronger (score 2) in 49.1% (n = 104/212) and substantially stronger (score 3) in 32.5% (n = 69/212) of adenomas compared to non-tumorous colorectal mucosa. In 18.4% (n = 39/212) of adenomas, cytoplasmic ARC staining was equivalent to that in non-tumorous mucosa. Nuclear expression of ARC in over 75% of cells was present in 30.7% (n = 65/212) of investigated adenomas, and nuclear expression in 10-75% of cells was detected in 62.7% (n = 133/212). ARC expression in under 10% of nuclei was found in 6.6% (n = 14/212) of adenomas. The correlation between nuclear ARC expression and cytoplasmic ARC expression was highly significant (p = 0.001). Moreover, nuclear ARC expression correlated positively with overexpression of Bcl-2, COX-2 p53 and beta-catenin. Cytoplasmic ARC also correlated with overexpression of Bcl-2. Sporadic MMR deficiency was detected in very few FAP adenomas and showed no correlation with nuclear or cytoplasmic ARC. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that both cytoplasmic and nuclear ARC are overexpressed in FAP adenomas, thus in a homogenous collective. The highly significant correlation between nuclear ARC and nuclear beta-catenin suggested that ARC might be regulated by beta-catenin in FAP adenomas. Because of its further correlations with p53, Bcl-2, and COX-2, nuclear ARC might play a substantial role not only in carcinomas but also in precursor lesions.

Cinchona-based chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) were designed and successfully synthesized via the Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. AB(2) and A(2)B-type chiral monomers were prepared from cinchona squaramide derivatives, where A (vinyl) reacted only with B (iodophenyl) under MH reaction conditions. The chiral HBPs obtained by the MH polymerization contained cinchona squaramide moieties and demonstrated excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric Michael addition reactions of methyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. This work presents a detailed study of the reactivity of three mononuclear Cu-II complexes supported by derivatives of the tetradentate ligand N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,2-ethylenediamine (bispicen). The Cu-II complexes are capable of performing C – H bond activation in the presence of NEt3 and H2O2 through what has been proposed computationally to be a [CuO](+) intermediate. A wavefunction-based quantum chemical investigation into the electronic structure of the proposed [CuO](+) intermediate reveals a triplet ground state predominantly consistent with an S = 1/2 Cu-II center ferromagnetically coupled to an oxyl radical, though contributions from the corresponding biradicaloid CM-oxen resonance structure may be nontrivial. Furthermore, correlation of the electronic structure of the proposed intermediate with analogous high-valent metal-oxo species capable of olefin epoxidation suggests that the Cu-II complexes might be also capable of olefin epoxidation in the presence of NEt3 and H2O2. To test this hypothesis experimentally, the Cu-II complexes are treated with NEt 3 and H2O2 in the presence of alkene substrates, resulting in the formation of epoxides.

A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88% yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3 : 1.0, a temperature of 75-100 degrees C, and a reaction time of 4 h. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-alpha-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4% yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.
