We report a set of electrochemically regulated protocols for the divergent synthesis of ketones and beta-keto esters from the same beta-hydroxycarboxylic acid starting materials. Enabled by electrochemical control, the anodic oxidation of carboxylic acids proceeded in either a one-electron or a two-electron pathway, leading to a 1,4-aryl transfer or a semipinacol-type 1,2-group transfer product with excellent chemoselectivity. The 1,4-aryl transfer represents an unprecedented example of carbon-to-oxygen group transfer proceeding via a radical mechanism. In contrast to previously reported radical group transfer reactions, this 1,4-group transfer process features the migration of electron-rich aryl substituents. Furthermore, with these chemoselective electrochemical oxidation protocols, a range of ketones and beta-keto esters including those possessing a challenging-to-access medium-sized ring could be synthesized in excellent yields.

Group 6 alkynyl Fischer carbene complexes behave as electrophiles with highly reactive masked dienes such as anthrone and 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone, which also can react as bidentate nucleophiles. Both Cr-0 and W-0 alkynyl carbene complexes require tertiary amines to promote the formation of 1,4-C-addition products, but a marked dependence of the reactivity on the metal was observed. Although W-0 complexes form exclusively the 1,4-C-adducts in the presence of a catalytic amount of base, Cr-0 complexes lead to new anthrone-derived bis-carbene complexes, obtained by a sequential 1,4-C- and 1,4-O-addition process with high diastereoselectivity and only in the presence of an excess of base. DFT computational studies show that the gap between the LUMO of the complex and the HOMO of the anthrone determines the differences in reactivity and that the stability of the intermediate metal allenyls formed after the initial 1,4-addition is decisive for the outcome of the reaction.

The development of metal phosphide catalysts for organic synthesis is still in its early stages. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of single-crystal cobalt phosphide nanorods (Co2P NRs) containing coordinatively unsaturated Co-Co active sites, which serve as a new class of air-stable, highly active, and reusable heterogeneous catalysts for the reductive amination of carbonyl compounds. The Co2P NR catalyst showed high activity for the transformation of a broad range of carbonyl compounds to their corresponding primary amines using an aqueous ammonia solution or ammonium acetate as a green amination reagent at 1 bar of H-2 pressure; these conditions are far milder than previously reported. The air stability and high activity of the Co2P NRs is noteworthy, as conventional Co catalysts are air-sensitive (pyrophorous) and show no activity for this transformation under mild conditions. P-alloying is therefore of considerable importance for nanoengineering air-stable and highly active non-noble-metal catalysts for organic synthesis.

Low Magnetic field effects on a photoinduced electron transfer reaction between benzophenone and 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane (DABCO) in an ionic liquid of N,N,N-trimethyl-N-propylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide were studied with nanosecond transient absorption measurements. At a magnetic field (similar to 2 mT) comparable with the hyperfine coupling in DABCO cation, so-called low field effects (LFEs), whose effect is opposite to the magnetic field effects caused by the hyperfine coupling mechanism, were observed on the yield of the benzophenone anion radical. The magnitude of the LFE is linearly increased with the increase of the lifetime of the radical ion pair. The present study provides basic data to clarify the mechanism of LFEs in biological systems.

fac-[Re(CO)(3)(kappa(2)-N-im,S-bptsc)Cl] (2), isolated from the reaction between Re(CO) 5 Cl and benzophenone thiosemicarbazone, bptsc, (1) in refluxing toluene in air, is the first Re compound of 1 and is the second Re(CO)(3)Cl compound of kappa(2)-N-im,S-coordinated ligand (im = imine). The authenticity of 2 was established from the results of its elemental composition, spectroscopic measurements, and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Single crystals of 2 grown from DMF are in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. The asymmetric unit of 2 revealed pseudo-octahedral coordination about Re. Two carbonyl C atoms, an imine N atom and a thione S atom occupy the equatorial sites and the axial sites are occupied by a carbonyl C atom and a Cl atom. The kappa(2)-N,S-coordination of 1 to Re forms a semi-planar five-membered [Re-N-N-C-S] metallocyclic ring. The extended structure disclosed stacks of molecules interlocked via a web of N-H center dot center dot center dot X (X = Cl or O), S center dot center dot center dot S and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. DFT calculations divulged facile delocalization of electron density in the molecule and interatomic distances and angles in good agreement with the solid state structure. Electrochemical measurements on 2 in CH3CN and DMF revealed sequential irreversible electron transfers pointing to structural changes due to electrochemically induced thione-thiol tautomerization of the thioamide moiety. Plausible mechanisms for the oxidative and reductive electrochemical decomposition of 1 and 2 are reported. A novel sterically demanding bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methane ligand 6 ((4-BzhH2)BoxCH(2)) was gained in a straightforward six-step synthesis. Starting from this ligand monomeric [M((4-BzhH2)BoxCH)] (M=Na (7), K (8(1))) and dimeric [{M((4-BzhH2)BoxCH)}(2)] (M=K (8(2)), Rb (9), Cs (10)) alkali metal complexes were synthesised by deprotonation. ion of the potassium ion of 8 by reaction with 18-crown-6 resulted in the solvent separated ion pair [{(THF)(2)K@(18-crown-6)}{bis(4-benzhydryl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methanide}] (11), including the energetically favoured monoanionic (E,E)-((4-BzhH2)BoxCH) ligand. Further reaction of (4-BzhH2)BoxCH(2) with three equivalents KH and two equivalents 18-crown-6 yielded polymeric [{(THF)(2)K@(18-crown-6)}{K@(18-crown-6)K((4-Bzh)BoxCH)}](n) (n ->infinity) (12) containing a trianionic ligand. The neutral ligand and herein reported alkali complexes were characterised by single X-ray analyses identifying the latter as a promising precursor for low-valent main group complexes.

4-Imidazol-1-yl-butane-1-sulfonic acid (ImBu-SO3H) has been successfully synthetized and fully characterized by FT-IR and high-resolution NMR spectroscopy (H-1, C-13). The plausible alternative structures of ImBu-SO3H were discussed on the basis of its NMR data. The ionic liquid showed interesting dual solvent-catalyst property, which was studied experimentally for the acetylation of a variety of functionalized alcohols, phenols, thiols, amines and a-tocopherol (a-CTP) as the most active form of vitamin E with acetic anhydride and which provided good yields within a short reaction time. ImBu-SO3H was successfully recycled by product extraction with an average recovered yield of 82% for 5 subsequent runs. A novel oxidative esterification of 1-arylprop-2-en-1-ols with toluene derivatives catalyzed by tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) is reported. The optimization of the reaction conditions illustrates that each of experiment parameters including the catalyst, solvent, and oxidant is significant for present oxidative functionalization. This metal-free protocol has a broad substrate scope including the halogen groups for further functionalization and enriches the reactivity profile of allyl alcohol and toluene derivatives. In addition, this protocol represents a new transformation of allyl alcohol involving C-C bond cleavage and C-O bond forming.

The polysaccharide of yam was extracted by hot water method and purified by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of Chinese yam polysaccharide were analyzed by UV, IR, GPC, 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. The results showed that Chinese yam polysaccharide had alpha-D-Gluc-(1 -> 4) glycoside bond, and the C2 hydroxyl group was replaced by ethoxyl group. The average molecular weight was determined to be 7.28 x 104. It showed that The scavenging effect of yam polysaccharide on hydroxyl radicals was similar to VC. The sulfated polysaccharide (S-P), phosphorylated polysaccharide (P-P), carboxymethylated polysaccharide (C-P) and acetylated polysaccharide (A-P) were identified by IR and NMR. The results showed that P and its derivatives showed good antioxidant activity. Especially, their scavenging ability to hydroxyl radicals reached the level of VC. This laid a theoretical foundation for the development of yam polysaccharide-related foods.

Biological fouling, also called biofouling, is the undesirable formation of organisms on a surface immersed in water. When the exterior surface of an object such as a vessel is submerged in seawater for a prolonged period, micro and macro organisms usually accumulate on the surface. Biofilms are a set of microorganisms attached to a surface through exopolymers they produce, also known as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPS are a mixture of polymers produced by microorganisms such as bacteria in the presence of biomass. EPS are mainly made up of carbohydrates and proteins, but in smaller quantities, they also contain lipids, nucleic acids, and humic substances. Proteins and carbohydrates found in eps can be quantified by using biochemical methods. The Modified Lowry method, BCA method, and Bradford methods are the common biochemical methods used to quantify protein. Anthrone-sulphuric acid and phenol-sulphuric acid are most common methods used to quantify carbohydrate. The Lowry method was determined to be the best method to quantify protein because it has high precision, low error and low limit of detection. Also, it is highly sensitive and reproducible. The anthrone method was determined to be the best method to quantify carbohydrate because it has high precision, low error, low LOQ. Results were confirmed by testing on substrates deployed in the marine environment to allow establishment of a natural biofilm for study.
