A heterogeneous organic-inorganic hybrid durable nanocatalyst gamma-Al2O3@Silane-TMG was prepared by covalently functionalization of nano-gamma-Al2O3 through anchored 3-chloropropyl- trimethoxysilane with 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG). The structure of the catalyst was characterized by various techniques including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX and TGA analyses. The synthesized nanocatalyst was successfully used in an efficient and green four-component synthesis of pyrazolopyranopyrimidine derivatives using ethyl acetoacetate, hydrazine hydrate, arylaldehydes and barbituric acid (or thiobarbituric acid) in H2O at 40 oC. This practical method produced the desired products at reduced reaction times (10-25 min) and high to excellent yields (85-98%). The main advantages of this practical method are the use of heterogeneous basic nanocatalyst, simple work-up procedure with no need to chromatographic purification, affording highly selective conversion and recyclability of the catalyst which could be used in 5 cycles with only a small decrease in its activity. Diastereoselective aza-Diels-Alder reaction between in situ generated 2-aminophenyl-substituted enones and alpha-cyano-alpha,beta-unsaturated aromatic ketone has been developed. In the presence of TEA as a catalyst prepared highly substituted tetrahydroquinolines with an all-carbon quaternary center in an in situ fashion. Ethnopharmacological relevance: In the Indian traditional system of medicine, Bergenia ligulata (Wall.) Engl. has been used for treatment of umlithiasis. Its efficacious nature has led to its incorporation in various commercial herbal formulations such as Cystone and Neeri which are prescribed for kidney related ailments. Aim of the study: To assess whether ethanolic extract of B. ligulata can mitigate the cascade of inflammatory responses that cause oxidative stress and ultimately cell death in renal epithelial cells exposed to hyperoxaluric conditions. Material and methods: Bioactivity guided fractionation using solvents of varying polarities was employed to evaluate the potential of the extracts of B. ligulata to inhibit the crystallization process. Modulation of crystal morphology was visualized through Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Cell death was assessed using flow cytometry based assays. Alteration in the inflammatory mediators was evaluated using real time PCR and immunocytochemistry. Phytochemical characterization of the ethanolic extract was carried out using FTIR, LCMS and GC-MS. Results: Bioactivity guided fractionation for the assessment of antilithiatic activity revealed dose dependent inhibition of nucleation and aggregation process of calcium oxalate crystals in the presence of various extracts, however ethanolic extract showed maximum inhibition and was chosen for further experiments. Studies on renal epithelial NRK-52E cells showed, cytoprotective efficacy of B. ligulata extract against oxalate injury. SEM anaysis further revealed the potential of the extract to modulate the crystal structure and adhesion to renal cell surface. Exposure of the renal cells to the extract led to conversion of the calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals to the less injurious calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) form. Expression analysis for oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers in NRK-52E cells revealed up-regulation of Mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), Osteopontin (OPN) and Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B), in response to calcium oxalate insult; which was drastically reduced in the presence of B. ligulata extract. Flow cytometric evaluation pointed to caspase 3 mediated apoptotic cell death in oxalate injured cells, which was attenuated by B. ligulata extract. Conclusion: Considering the complex multifactorial etiology of urolithiasis, ethanolic extract from B. ligulata can be a promising option for the management of kidney stones, as it has the potential to limit inflammation and the subsequent cell death.

A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88% yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3 : 1.0, a temperature of 75-100 degrees C, and a reaction time of 4 h. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-alpha-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4% yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.

The first asymmetric synthesis of 3-methyleneindolines from alkynyl imines has been developed via a rhodium-catalyzed tandem process: regioselective alkynylation of the internal alkynes and subsequent intramolecular addition to the imines. The reaction proceeded with unconventional chemo-selectivity and provided 3-methyleneindolines with good yields (up to 82% yield) and high enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee). Moreover, this transformation also features mild reaction conditions, perfect atom economy, and a broad substrate scope.

A recyclable organic photoreductant (1 mol % CBZ6)-catalyzed reductive (pinacol) coupling of aldehydes, ketones, and imines has been developed. Irradiated by purple light (407 nm) using triethylamine as an electron donor, a variety of 1,2-diols and 1,2-diamines could be prepared. The oxidation potential of the excited state of CBZ6 is established as -1.92 V (vs saturated calomel electrode (SCE)). The relative high reductive potential enables the reductive coupling of carbonyl compounds and their derivatives. CBZ6 can be prepared in gram scale and is acid/base- or air-stable. It could be applied in large-scale photoreductive synthesis and recovered in high yield after the reaction.

A Rh-catalyzed pot and step economic synthesis of aza-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) from readily available aryl ketones and alkynes has been disclosed. Additionally, a novel synthetic application of the well-known aminating reagent hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid (HOSA) has been explored as an in situ redox-neutral directing group for the formation of N-PAHs via isoquinoline. Electrocatalytic oxidation has been proven as a sustainable and promising alternative to traditional chemical transformation, but its further development is limited by the use of noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, a polyoxometalate-based electrode material, H5PMo10V2O40@CTF (denoted as PMo10V2@CTF), has been successfully fabricated through electrostatic assembly of a molecular polyoxometalate catalyst, PMo10V2, with a porous cationic covalent triazine framework (CTF), which, to our knowledge, represents the first combination of polyoxometalate with a cationic CTF. The resulting PMo10V2@CTF exhibits high activity for the selective electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes, achieving 99% conversion of benzyl alcohol, over 99% selectivity of benzyl aldehyde, and at the same time near unity H-2 production. Notably, the reported electrocatalytic system presents good atom economy, high energy conversion (96% faradaic efficiency), remarkable catalytic activity and robustness for at least eight recycles. Based on the various experimental and spectroscopic analyses, a possible catalytic mechanism was proposed, revealing that such excellent electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the versatile redox ability of PMo10V2 and the good porosity and adsorption property of the CTF in the constructed PMo10V2@CTF composite.

In recent years, heavy metal ions and nitroaromatic explosives in environmental pollutants have been a serious threat to human health due to their high toxicity, carcinogenicity, and nondegradability. The detection of metal ions and nitroaromatics has become an urgent problem. In this paper, a new water stable luminescent Eu-based metal-organic framework ([Eu(L)(DMF)(2)](n)) was prepared by the reaction of rigid ligand H3L (3,5-bis-(3-carboxyphenoxy)benzoic acid) and Eu (NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O under solvothermal conditions. Luminescent detection of the nitroaromatic compounds and metal ions showed that the complex had high sensitivity to Fe3+, o-nitrophenol, p-nitrophenol, and m-nitrophenol.

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with abnormal inflammatory and coagulation markers, potentially mediating thrombotic events. Our objective was to investigate the incidence, time course, laboratory features, and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients with suspected venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who had undergone ultrasound imaging for suspected VTE from March 13 to May 18, 2020. The medical records of the included patients were reviewed for D-dimer, fibrinogen, prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, platelet count, C-reactive protein (CRP), and high-sensitivity troponin T at admission and at up to seven time points before and after ultrasound examination. The clinical outcomes included superficial venous thrombosis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, intubation, and death. Mixed effects logistic, linear, and Cox proportional hazards methods were used to evaluate the relationships between the laboratory markers and VTE and other in-hospital outcomes. Results: Of 138 patients who had undergone imaging studies, 44 (31.9%) had evidence of VTE. On univariable analysis, an elevated admission CRP (odds ratio [OR], 1.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.09; P = .02; per 10-U increase in CRP), platelet count (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.04-2.12; P = .03; per 1000-U increase in platelet count), and male sex (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.19-5.84; P = .02), were associated with VTE. However only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis (OR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.01-5.56; P = .048). The independent predictors of death included older age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00-1.07; P = .04), active malignancy (HR, 4.39; 95% CI, 1.39-13.91; P = .01), elevated admission D-dimer (HR, 1.016; 95% CI, 1.003-1.029; P = .02), and evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (HR, 4.81; 95% CI, 1.76-13.10; P = .002). Conclusions: Male sex, elevated CRP, and elevated platelet count at admission were associated with VTE on univariable analysis. However, only male sex remained significant on multivariable analysis. Older age, active malignancy, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and elevated D-dimer at admission were independently associated with death for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
