The impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor on indoor environment and people has attracted much attention. To reduce this problem of odorous compounds contained in wood panel, this study focused on identifying odorant compounds and exploring the influence of moisture content factors on VOCs and odor emissions. Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera (L.)Vent.) was investigated using the technology of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactory (GC-MS/O). Total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and characteristic odor-active compounds were studied, and the emission of heartwood and sapwood of paper mulberry was compared at the same time. It was found that the main components from heartwood and sapwood were aromatics, alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes ketones, alcohols and esters. Totally, 23 kinds of odor-active compounds were identified from heartwood and sapwood of paper mulberry, among which, aromatics and aldehydes ketones were the main odorant compounds. Seven kinds of key odorant compounds were identified in this process. With the decrease in moisture content, the TVOC and total odor intensity of heartwood and sapwood generally decreased. The moisture content had a great effect on VOC release when the moisture content decreased from 70 to 50% and reduced from fiber saturation point (30%) to air saturation point (10%). The main odor impressions of paper mulberry were aromatic, fresh fruit fragrance, sweet scent and special pungent. In the whole process of moisture content decrease, the TVOC, concentration of odorant and odor intensity of sapwood were higher than that of heartwood.

Garcinia gardneriana is a medicinal tree species used in Brazil in the treatment of hepatitis and gastritis. This use is attributed to phenolic compounds, mainly 7-epiclusianone, guttiferone-A and fukugetin, which present several proven biological activities. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study on the phytotoxic activity of G. gardneriana extracts has been conducted until now. This research proposed to isolate and quantify by highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) the major compounds from G. gardneriana seed extracts in ethyl acetate and to evaluate their phytotoxic activities. The natural products 7-epiclusianone, guttiferone-A and fukugetin were quantified at concentrations varying from 0.46 to 1.13 mg mL-1 and were isolated with yields ranging from 7% to 23% (w/w). The phytotoxic assay indicated that the crude extract showed no action on the dry matter of Sorghum bicolor plants, but the isolated compounds fukugetin and 7-epiclusianone had moderate activity. On the other hand, guttiferone-A displayed a greater herbicide activity than glyphosate, a positive control, even in almost three times lower concentrations, causing severe intoxication in the plants. This work is the first report on this activity by the extract of G. gardneriana and its isolated compounds. Besides that, guttiferone-A showed up as a scaffold for the development of new agrochemicals. Complementing these findings, computational studies suggested that this benzophenone can interact effectively with transferase enzymes type, in special caffeic acid O-methyltransferase from S. bicolor (PDB code: 4PGH), indicating a possible mechanism of action in this plant.

BACKGROUND Rectosigmoid endometriosis is an underdiagnosed disease responsible for abdominal pain, transit disorders and rectal bleeding. Two surgical approaches, rectosigmoid bowel resection (segmental or patch) or intramuscular layer dissection (shaving), are available. AIM To assess whether the lesion features observed via preoperative rectosigmoid endoscopic ultrasonography (RS-EUS) might predict the need for bowel resection. METHODS This multicentric retrospective study was conducted on patients with rectosigmoid endometriosis who underwent a curative surgical procedure, evaluated by RS-EUS performed by two trained operators, between January 2012 and March 2018. A univariate statistical analysis was performed on nodules’ RS-EUS features (thickness, width, infiltration of the submucosae, presence of a bump into the digestive lumen and presence of multiple rectosigmoid localizations). A multivariate logistic regression was then performed on the significant results. RESULTS Of the 367 patients, 73 patients with rectosigmoid endometriosis were evaluated by RS-EUS and underwent rectosigmoid surgery. After the univariate analysis was completed, thickness, width and infiltration of the submucosae were identified as potential predictive factors for bowel resection. In a multivariate logistic regression model, only thickness appeared to be a significant [odds ratio (OR) = 1.49, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-2.12, P = 0.028] predictive factor for bowel resection. Receiver operating characteristic analysis performed showed tha t a thickness over 5.20 ram might be used as cut-off with a sensitivity of 76%, a specificity of 81%, and an area under carve = 0.82. The cut-off values for 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity were 0.90 mm and 10.00 mm, respectively. A trend concerning width to predict the need for resection was also observed (OR 1.12, 95% CI: 1.00-1.26, P = 0.054) CONCLUSION The presence of a rectosigmoid nodule of endometriosis greater than 5.20 mm thick on RS-EUS might predict the need for bowel resection.

The degradation of toluene in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor packed with supported photocatalysts TiO2/gamma-Al2O3, Ce-TiO2/gamma-Al2O3, Ag-TiO2/gamma-Al2O3, La-TiO2/gamma-Al2O3, and Co-TiO2/gamma-Al2O3 was investigated.The supported catalysts were prepared by sol-gel and impregnation methods and were characterized in detail using N-2 adsorption,XRD,TEM,XPS and UV-Vis analysis technology. Compared to the non-thermal plasma (NTP) alone system, the degradation rate of toluene and CO2 selectivity improved significantly with the combination of plasma and photocatalysts, meanwhile, the CO selectivity and the by-products NO2 and O-3 reduced. When the photocatalyst Ag-TiO2/gamma-Al2O3 was packed into the discharge region,this plasma-photocatalytic system could completely remove toluene with above 81% CO2 selectivity and greatly reduced concentration of poisonous byproducts (O-3 and NO2) at 5 kJ.L-1, while exhibiting superior stability. The energy efficiency of the hybrid system was increased by about 1.4-3 times, compared with the separated NTP. The main energy loss was the formation of by-products and the loss of light and heat. Finally, the intermediate products of the toluene degradation process of different catalyst systems were analyzed by GC-MS, and the mechanism of toluene degradation by the NTP-photocatalytic system was concluded. The process of NTP synergistic photocatalytic degradation of toluene mainly included three aspects: NTP degradation of toluene, photocatalytic oxidation degradation of toluene, and the synergistic effect between the two. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the study on the performance of VOCs degradation by NTP, and have certain guiding significance for the application and mechanism research of VOCs degradation by NTP.

Background Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy-specific syndrome with incompletely understood pathogenesis. Previous study has demonstrated that the decreased CXCR2 in preeclamptic placentas may contribute to the development of preeclampsia. The role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CXCR2 gene in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia remains largely unexplored. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between polymorphisms of CXCR2 gene and preeclampsia in Han Chinese women. Methods Totally 481 pregnant women, including 243 controls and 238 patients with preeclampsia were recruited. The rs1126579 and rs2230054 polymorphisms in CXCR2 gene were tested using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results Significantly increased risk of preeclampsia was observed in the rs1126579 CC or TC/CC genotypes when compared with TT genotype (CC vs. TT: odss ratio [OR] = 2.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.18-3.76, p = 0.039; TC/CC vs. TT: OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.29-2.78, p = 0.001). Markedly higher risk of preeclampsia was found to be associated with rs1126579 TC genotype (TC vs. TT/CC: OR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, p = 0.031). After stratification analysis, the different distribution of TC/CC genotypes was particularly significant in the severe preeclampsia group (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.42-3.24, p < 0.01), the early-onset severe preeclampsia group (OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.14-3.42, p = 0.013), and the late-onset severe preeclampsia group (OR = 2.29, 95% CI = 1.39-3.78, p < 0.01). Besides, TC genotype carriers had a 1.55 fold increased risk of severe preeclampsia (95% CI = 1.06-2.27, p = 0.022) and a 1.80 fold increased risk of late onset severe preeclampsia (95% CI = 1.14-2.83, p = 0.01) than those of TT/CC genotype carriers. Conclusions Our study suggests a genetic association between rs1126579 polymorphism in CXCR2 gene and increased risk of preeclampsia. These data provide a new clue for future investigation. This study included 1456 men and 1411 women who were trauma-exposed and underwent routine health examinations in a community epidemiological investigation. The participants completed the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Check List-Civilian Version (PCL-C) for PTSD and medical examinations to detect metabolic syndrome. Adjustments for age, marriage, exercise, education, cigarette smoking, cancer, stroke, angina, and thyroid disease were performed. The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.

A selective transfer hydrocarbylation of substituted (hetero)aryl groups from tertiary alcohols to ketones was realized, employing benign alcohols as latent C-nucleophiles. All preliminary mechanistic experiments support a reversible b-carbon elimination/migratory insertion mechanism. In a broader context, this novel reactivity offers a new platform for the manipulation of tertiary alcohols in catalysis.

Substituted imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated for their reactivity towards Na12Ge17 as a model system containing redox-sensitive Zintl cluster anions. The ILs proved widely inert for imidazolium cations with a 1,2,3-trisubstitution at least by alkyl groups, and for the anion bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)azanide (TFSI). In this content, a green approach for the ultrasound promoted in situ immobilization of Pd NPs over biodegradable chitosan/agarose modified ferrite NP (Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd) is developed. The structural and physicochemical features of the material were estimated using advanced analytical techniques like FT-IR, ICP-OES, FESEM, EDS, XRD, TEM and VSM. The magnetic material was catalytically explored in the oxidation of alcohols under ultrasonic waves. Sonication had a significant role in enhancing the catalytic performance in the alcohol’s oxidation as compared to conventional heating. The heterogeneous nanocatalyst was efficiently recycled up to 10 times with nominal loss in catalytic activity. Towards the biological applications, the Fe3O4@CS-Agarose/Pd nanocomposite showed high antioxidant activities against DPPH free radicals, comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In addition, it exhibited excellent cytotoxicity in terms of % cell viability against breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7), breast carcinoma (Hs 578Bst), infiltrating ductal cell carcinoma (Hs 319.T), and metastatic carcinoma (MDA-MB-453) cell lines. 10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.
