Chiral polyureas of cinchona alkaloids were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. The Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of cinchona urea dimers6and aromatic diiodide7afforded the chiral polyureas (P1-P4). The catalytic activity of the chiral polymers was subsequently investigated. The asymmetric Michael addition of ketoesters to nitroolefins was successfully catalyzed by the polymeric organocatalysts (P1-P4) to give the corresponding Michael adducts with high catalytic activities and excellent enantionselectivities (up to >99% ee). The polymeric catalysts were insoluble in commonly used organic solvents. They were easily recovered and reused several times without any loss of the catalytic activity.

Several ethylenedioxy-bridged bisarenes with a variety of type and number of aryl groups were synthesized to study non-covalent dispersion-driven inter- and intramolecular aryl-aryl interactions in the solid state and gas phase. Intramolecular interactions are preferably found in the gas phase. DFT calculations with and without dispersion correction show larger interacting aromatic groups increase the stabilization energy of folded conformers and decrease the intermolecular centroid-centroid distance. Single-molecule structures generally adopt folded conformations with short intramolecular aryl-aryl contacts. Gas electron diffraction experiments were performed exemplarily for 1-(pentafluorophenoxy)-2-(phenoxy)ethane. A new procedure for structure refinement was developed to deal with the conformational complexity of such molecules. The results are an experimental confirmation of the existence of folded conformations of this molecule with short intramolecular aryl-aryl distances in the gas phase. Solid-state structures are dominated by stretched structures without intramolecular aryl-aryl interactions but interactions with neighboring molecules.

Ecological wastewater treatment plant (EWWTP), a kind of emerging wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in recent years, combined microbiology with botany which is efficient for the removal of nitrogen and organic matter, as well as deodorization. The occurrence and removal of micro-organic pollutants in EWWTPs were still not well known. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their typical derivatives (SPAHs) including the oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and methyl PAHs (MPAHs) were investigated in an EWWTP in Guangdong Province, China. The concentrations of the sigma 6 OPAHs (114-384ng/L) were higher than the sigma 16 PAHs (92-250ng/L), and much higher than the sigma 4 MPAHs (13-64ng/L) and sigma 9 ClPAHs (2-3ng/L) in the EWWTP and the effluent receiving river. The total removal efficiencies of the PAHs, OPAHs, MPAHs, and ClPAHs in the EWWTP (43 +/- 14%, 41 +/- 7%, 55 +/- 16%, and 18 +/- 4%) were lower than the traditional WWTPs, probably due to the lower concentration of the sludge in the ecological treatment. The advanced treatment process (microfiltration and UV disinfection treatment) contributed much less (0-20%) to the whole removal efficiency than the ecological treatment (80-100%). The effluent from the EWWTP slightly reduced the PAHs and SPAHs concentrations in the receiving river. The high concentrations of the PAHs and SPAHs in the receiving river were similar to the influent of the EWWTP, indicating that some untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the river, especially in the upstream.

This work presents the facile synthesis of heteroatom-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (C-dots), which could serve as an antioxidant. Herein, nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur codoped carbon dots (NPSC-dots) have been synthesized by a single-step hydrothermal strategy. Owing to the radical scavenging activity of the NPSC-dots, they were tested against several methods as well as in practical applications. The antioxidant ability of the NPSC-dots was efficiently utilized on plastic films by coating with these NPSC-dots. For the very first time, NPSC-dots were immobilized onto nonpolar plastic films (polypropylene) via photochemical covalent grafting to extend the shelf life of food items or storage without affecting the quality of plastic films. The NPSC-dot-coated PP film with negligible deterioration of transparency was extensively studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurement, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The fluorescent character, antioxidant ability, and durability under different solvent systems of the coated film were examined. Also, the coated films were extensively and rigorously evaluated against simulated drastic environmental conditions to ensure the durability and antifogging application.

In soluble methane monooxygenase enzymes (sMMO), dioxygen (O-2) is activated at a diiron(II) center to form an oxodiiron(IV) intermediate Q that performs the challenging oxidation of methane to methanol. An analogous mechanism of O-2 activation at mono- or dinuclear iron centers is rare in the synthetic chemistry. Herein, we report a mononuclear non-heme iron(II)cyclam complex, 1-trans, that activates O-2 to form the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex, 2-trans, via a mechanism reminiscent of the O-2 activation process in sMMO. The conversion of 1-trans to 2-trans proceeds via the intermediate formation of an iron(III)-superoxide species 3, which could be trapped and spectroscopically characterized at -50 degrees C. Surprisingly, 3 is a stronger oxygen atom transfer (OAT) agent than 2-trans; 3 performs OAT to 1-trans or PPh 3 to yield 2-trans quantitatively. Furthermore, 2-trans oxidizes the aromatic C-H bonds of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, which, together with the strong OAT ability of 3, represents new domains of oxoiron(IV) and superoxoiron(III) reactivities.

Co3O4 and Eu-doped Co3O4 nanocatalysts were synthesized through an ultrasonic-assisted solvothermal method and were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) methods. Spinel cubic crystalline system for synthesized nanocatalysts was confirmed with XRD, whereas the spherical morphology of Co3O4 changed to nanorods after Eu3+ doping, which was affirmed with FESEM micrographs. The effluent from conventional treatment process (including anaerobic digestion and anoxic-oxic treatment) for pig farm wastewater was difficult to treat due to its low ratio of biochemical oxygen demand to chemical oxygen demand (BOD5/CODCr) (<0.1). In the present study, electro-Fenton (EF) was used to improve the biodegradability of the mentioned effluent and the properties of self-prepared CeO2 doped multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) electrodes were also studied. An excellent H2O2 production (165 mg L-1) was recorded, after an 80-min electrolysis, when the mass ratio of MWCNTs, CeO2 and pore-forming agent (NH4HCO3) was 6:1:1. Results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that addition of NH4HCO3 and the doping of CeO2 could increase the superficial area of the electrode as well as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electro-catalytic performance. The BOD5/CODCr of the wastewater from the first stage AO process increased from 0.08 to 0.45 and CODCr reduced 71.5% after an 80-min electrolysis, with 0.3 mM Fe2+ solution. The non-biodegradable chemical pollutants from the first stage AO process were degraded by EF. The non-biodegradable pollutants identified by LC-MS/MS in the effluent from AO process including aminopyrine, oxadixyl and 3-methyl-2-quinoxalinecarboxylic acid could be degraded by EF process, with the removal rates of 81.86%, 34.39% and 7.13% in 80 min, and oxytetracycline with the removal rate of 100% in 20 min. Supercritical methanol depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation (SCM-DHDO) of maple wood and lignin extracted with GVL from maple wood, was studied using a copper porous metal oxide catalyst. Phenols (P or H), guaiacols (G), and syringols (S) with deoxygenated 1 to 3-carbon (C-1-C-3) alkyl tails were the early products (15 min reaction time) from both the maple wood and the GVL extracted lignin. Furthermore, at 15 min reaction time, the maple wood products showed increased levels of demethoxylation with an S/G/P ratio of 1.0/4.2/1.2 versus 1.0/1.0/0.1 from the GVL extracted lignin products. After 4 h of reacting lignin monomers, dimers and trimers were produced with both the maple wood and extracted lignin. However, the 4 h maple wood products yielded twice the amount of lignin monomers (43.1%) as compared to the 4 h GVL extracted lignin products (20.1%). The GVL extracted lignin products were in the dimer to trimer molecular weight (MW, similar to 180-750 Da) ranges whereas the maple wood products were in the monomer to dimer MW ranges (similar to 94-500 Da) according to the GPC results. NMR and FT-ICR MS analyses show that both the 4 h maple wood products and 4 h GVL extracted lignin products undergo a high degree of hydrodeoxygenation, saturation, and repolymerization by C-C bond formation. The higher yield of lignin monomers from the maple wood is likely due to the lower lignin concentration that occurs during the reaction whereas higher lignin concentration during the reaction leads to more oligomerization reactions.

The relationship between PTSD and metabolic syndrome and each of its components was analyzed by multiple logistic regression. In women, PTSD was associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.01-1.95, P = .047) and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol component (OR = 1.98, 95% CI = 1.04-2.12, P = .002). In men, PTSD was related to the hypertension component of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023). There was also a relationship between PTSD severity and metabolism (OR = 1.141, 95% CI = 1.002-1.280, P = 0.037) in women, and PTSD was inversely associated with the hypertension component (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.31-0.92, P = .023) in men. PTSD was related to metabolic syndrome only in women. We plan to further research the mechanism of sex differences and dyslipidemia.
