Bis(thiomorpholinyldithiocarbamato) Zn(II) complex was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic techniques. The molecular structure of the compound revealed a dimeric Zn(II) complex in which each Zn(II) ion is bound to one chelating and two bridging thiomorpholine ligands. The compound was thermolyzed at 130 degrees C in octadecylamine (ODA), hexadecylamine (HDA), and oleylamine (OLA) to prepare ZnS nanoparticles. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) of the ZnS nanoparticles indicates mixtures of hexagonal and cubic crystalline phases depending on thermolysis temperature. HRTEM micrographs showed well-defined nanoparticles with particle size of 3.3-4.8 nm for ODA-ZnS, 2.5-4.2 nm for OLA-ZnS, while HDA-ZnS shows slightly bigger nanoparticles with particle size of 3.3-5.4 nm. Estimated optical band gaps are 3.58 eV for ODA-ZnS, 3.69 eV for HDA-ZnS and 3.72 eV for OLA-ZnS which indicate blue shift of the absorption band edges with respect to bulk ZnS (3.56 eV). The as-prepared ZnS nanoparticles were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of methylene blue dye. The degradation efficiency of the as-prepared ZnS nanoparticles are 58% for ODA-ZnS, 53% for OLA-ZnS, and 43% for HDA-ZnS. ODA-ZnS nanoparticles were used for the recycling test and showed good photostability and recyclability with 57% recovery percentage.

A stability-indicating method for the determination of S-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine and related degradation impurities in Exputex (R) 250 mg/5 mL syrup was developed in anion-exchange liquid chromatography mode. A forced degradation study supported the method development to ensure stability indicating conditions. Aqueous solutions of the active pharmaceutical ingredient and syrup samples at different pH-values were stress-tested in different thermal, light exposure and headspace conditions. One degradation product was detected in thermal stress studies at 60 degrees C and 80 degrees C in the pH range 5.0-7.0 and was identified by mass spectrometry as 5-oxo-thiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid (lactam of carbocysteine). A second degradation product was only generated in moderately strong oxidizing conditions (0.5% H2O2 aqueous solution) and was identified as S-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine-(R/S)-sulphoxide (carbocysteine sulphoxide). The method was developed on a Zorbax SAX column, in isocratic mode. The mobile phase consisted of 200 mM phosphate solution at pH 4.0 and acetonitrile (50:50 v/v) and UV detection was performed at a wavelength of 205 nm. The method was linear for carbocysteine (R > 0.9982) over a concentration range of 2.5-50 mu g/mL and 0.4-0.6 mg/mL. Linearity for the impurities was shown from the LOQ to 50 mu g/mL. Specificity was verified and accuracy demonstrated for the active ingredient and its degradation products in syrup samples at 3 levels around their respective specification limits. Repeatability, intermediate precision and inter-laboratory reproducibility were assessed on three commercial batches, analyzed in triplicate by two operators at both the transferring and the receiving site and demonstrated a successful method transfer to the manufacturing quality control laboratory. Several octasubstituted zinc azaphthalocyanines (ZnAzaPcs) of the tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine type have been synthesized as potential sensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Octasubstituted complexes, with thiophen-2-yl, thiophen-3-yl or benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl peripheral groups, were synthesized and characterized. Octa(thiophen-2-yl) ZnAzaPc is a better singlet oxygen producer and has a red shifted UV absorption Q-band compared to both thiophen-3-yl and benzo[b]thiophen-3-yl substituted ZnAzaPcs. Thus, the thiophen-2-yl substituent is better suited for our purpose. Unsymmetrically substituted ZnAzaPcs were synthesized by cyclotetramerisations of pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitriles attached to one thiophen-2-yl group and one alkylsulfanyl, thiomorpholinyl or imide group. Constitutional isomers were detected by NMR spectroscopy for some of these complexes. Compared to unsubstituted ZnAzaPc, red shifted Q-bands were observed for all these complexes, due to the presence of thiophen-2-yl groups. The least promising complexes are ZnAzaPcs with thiomorpholine or imide peripheral substituents, i.e. where the peripheral substituents are attached to the macrocycle through nitrogen atoms. Low singlet oxygen quantum yields (Phi(Delta)) and also low fluorescence quantum yields (Phi(F)) were observed for these ZnAzaPcs. In the case of combined thiophen-2-yl and alkylsulfanyl substituents, the values of Phi(Delta) were the highest and reached values of approximately 0.69. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
