In contrast, dinuclear [Cu-2(L-1)(2)(dmpip)(4)]center dot dmpip and [{Cu-2(L-1)(2)}(2)(thiomorph)(4)]center dot 3thiomorph each contain two 5-coordinate and two 6-coordinate centres. Each of [Cu-2(L-4)(2)(THF)(2)]center dot 2THF and Cu-2(L-4)(2)(mpip)(2)]center dot H2O incorporate only 5-coordinate metal centres, with the latter complex forming a one-dimensional hydrogen bonded ribbon-like structure directed along the crystallographic a-axis. In keeping with the documented tendency for the smallest, least strained assembly to form in supramolecular self-assembly processes, the incorporation of the flexible oxy linkage between the 4,4′-linked phenylene rings of H2L3 results in generation of a dinuclear [Cu2L2] species rather than a trinuclear (triangular) [Cu3L3] species of the type formed by the more rigid bis-beta-diketonato ligand analogue in which the biphenylene rings separating the beta-diketone domains are directly coupled in their 4,4′ positions.

Q-bands for octa(4-thiomorpholinyl)- and octa(I-pyrazolyl)-substituted zinc azaphthalocyanines and the zinc azaphthalocyanines with mixed substituents are found at respectively 655 and 670 nm (epsilon: 100 000-180 000 M-1.cm(-1)). The chemical structures of three new complexes were determined in solution by means of NMR spectroscopy and in solid state using X-ray measurements. For all presented complexes the coordination geometry about the Cu(I) centre is pseudo-tetrahedral showing the small flattening and large rocking distortions. All compounds crystallize as the discrete dimers bound by pi-stacking interactions between dmp rings, which strongly depend on the phosphane ligand. Investigated complexes exhibit orange photoluminescence in the solid state of highly diversified intensity, position of the luminescence band and the lifetimes. On the basis of TDDFT calculations, the CT bands observed in UV-Vis spectra are assigned to the two mixed transitions from the CuX (X = I or NCS) bond with a small admixture of the CuP bond to pi* orbitals of the dmp ligand: (MX,MPR3)LCT. However, emission bands can be interpreted to be of (MX)LCT type.

A number of thiomorpholine derivatives that are structurally similar to some substituted morpholines possessing antioxidant and hypocholesterolemic activity were synthesized. The new compounds incorporate an antioxidant moiety as the thiomorpholine N-substituent. The derivatives were found to inhibit the ferrous/ascorbate-induced lipid peroxidation of microsomal membrane lipids, with IC50 values as low as 7.5 mu M. In addition, these compounds demonstrate hypocholesterolemic and hypolipidemic action. The most active compound (5) decreases the triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels in the plasma of Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemic rats, by 80, 78, and 76%, respectively, at 56mmol/kg (i.p.). They may also act as squalene synthase inhibitors. The above results indicate that the new molecules may be useful as leads for the design of novel compounds as potentially antiatherogenic factors.

A strain of Mycobacterium sp. RP1 was isolated from a contaminated activated sludge. It was capable of utilizing morpholine, a waste of chemical industry, as sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy.
