A bioinspired iron(III)porphyrinic Zr-MOF, PCN-222(Fe), was modified by post-synthetic cluster metalation with iron(III) chloride, as a cheap, earth-abundant, and environmentally friendly metal precursor, towards formation a new multifunctional MOF, namely Fe@PCN-222(Fe). The MOF consists of bimetallic (Zr-oxo-Fe) nodes linked by Fe(III)porphyrin struts. The cluster metalation and pre-activation treatment of PCN-222(Fe) were performed cooperatively using the FeCl3. The respective MOF was characterized through various techniques, such as FT-IR, PXRD, ICP-AES, BET surface area, SEM, UV-Vis DRS, TGA/DSC, PL, and XPS analyses. The solid showed catalytic activity for one-pot tandem synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones from alcohols and 2-aminobenzamide through a three-consecutive-step reaction (oxidation-cyclization-oxidation) under visible light irradiation using air or oxygen without adding any additive. In addition, its catalytic performance was superior to that of the bare PCN-222(Fe) and the corresponding homogeneous catalysts. The experiments indicate that the solid MOF acts as both a photoredox and Lewis acid catalyst. Hot-filtration and Fe-leaching tests as well as reusability experiments confirm that the nominal MOF acts as an efficient reusable heterogeneous catalyst for at least three runs without significant decrease in its activity. This work demonstrates the potential of using MOFs as supports for single-site metal species towards preparation of multifunctional MOFs for modern organic transformations combining photocatalysis and catalysis. 3D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-defined porous channels are shown to be capable of inducing chiral molecular catalysts from non-enantioselective to highly enantioselective in catalyzing organic transformations. By condensations of a tetrahedral tetraamine and two linear dialdehydes derived from enantiopure 1,1 ‘-binaphthol (BINOL), two chiral 3D COFs with a 9-fold or 11-fold interpenetrated diamondoid framework are prepared. Enhanced Bronsted acidity was observed for the chiral BINOL units that are uniformly distributed within the tubular channels compared to the non-immobilized acids. This facilitates the Bronsted acid catalysis of cyclocondensation of aldehydes and anthranilamides to produce 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones. DFT calculations show the COF catalyst provides preferential secondary interactions between the substrate and framework to induce enantioselectivities that are not achievable in homogeneous systems.

Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway is implicated in the etiology and progression of metabolic disorders. Although lines of genetic evidence suggest that blockage of this pathway yields favorable outcomes in treating such ailments, few inhibitors have been used to validate the promising genetic findings. Here, we synthesized and characterized a novel class of triazole-based Wnt/beta-catenin signaling inhibitors and assessed their effects on energy metabolism. One of the top inhibitors, compound 3a, promoted Axin stabilization, which led to the proteasome degradation of beta-catenin and subsequent inhibition of the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling in cells. Treatment of hepatocytes and high fat diet-fed mice with compound 3a resulted in significantly decreased hepatic lipid accumulation. Moreover, compound 3a improved glucose tolerance of high fat diet-fed mice without noticeable toxicity, while downregulating the genes involved in the glucose and fatty acid anabolisms. The new inhibitors are expected to be further developed for the treatment of metabolic disorders.

A series of novel 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4-one derivatives containing 4,5-dihydrothiazole-2-thiol were synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, F-19 NMR and HRMS. The bioassay results showed that compounds 3-(3-((4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)thio)propyl)-7-methoxybenzo[d][1-3]triazin-4(3H)-one, 3-(3-((4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)thio)propyl)-6-nitrobenzo[d][1-3]triazin-4(3H)-one, 7-chloro-3-(3-((4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)thio)propyl)benzo[d][1-3]triazin-4(3H)-one exhibited good control efficacy against the cucumber root-knot nematode disease caused by Meloidogyne incognita at the concentration of 10.0 mg L-1 in vivo. Compound 7-chloro-3-(3-((4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)thio)propyl)benzo[d][1-3]triazin-4(3H)-one showed excellent nematicidal activity with inhibition 68.3% at a concentration of 1.0 mg L-1. It suggested that the structure of 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4-one containing 4,5-dihydro-thiazole-2-thiol could be optimized further.

Herein, we report a bioinspired catalytic system for the one-pot cascade oxidation of a native primary amine and an in situ generated non-native secondary amine. The catalyst consists of an o-quinone cofactor phd (1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione) and a copper ion and operates under ambient air conditions. Quinazolin-4(3H)-ones, which are common pharmacophores present in numerous pharmaceuticals and bioactive compounds, were synthesized in high yields. A detailed kinetic and mechanistic study elucidates the role of the catalyst in the multi-step oxidative cascade reaction.

Herein, via chemoselective N-mono and N,N-diarylation of an aryl/hetaryl amino amide reaction using benzyne or arynes, an amide-substituted triaryl amine derivative and diaryl amine derivatives were afforded. The scope and limitation of the present study have been studied. The products thus obtained were synthetically transformed to highly functionalized biphenyl bridged heterocycles via Suzuki coupling and condensation with 4,4-biphenyl dialdehyde. Evaluation of the photophysical properties has revealed that the triaryl amine derivatives are blue emissive with high quantum yields, whereas the heterocyclic triaryl amine derivatives are blue-red emissive. The benzofuran-derived compound 4i was found to be blue emissive with high quantum yield, whereas the pyridine-derived compound 5j was found to be red emissive with low quantum yield.

Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and luminescence from nonconventional luminophores have gained increasing attention. However, it remains challenging to achieve efficient RTP from unorthodox luminophores, on account of the unsophisticated understanding of the emission mechanism. Herein, we propose a strategy to realize efficient RTP in nonconventional luminophores through incorporation of lone pairs together with clustering and effective electronic interactions. The former promotes spin-orbit coupling and boosts the consequent intersystem crossing, whereas the latter narrows energy gaps and stabilizes the triplets, thus synergistically affording remarkable RTP. Experimental and theoretical results of urea and its derivatives verify the design rationale. Remarkably, RTP from thiourea solids with unprecedentedly high efficiency of up to 24.5 % is obtained. Further control experiments testify the crucial role of through-space delocalization on the emission. These results will spur the future fabrication of nonconventional phosphors and advance the understanding of the underlying emission mechanism.

A series of N-benzoylanthranilamide derivatives have been synthesized with the substitution of competitive HB acceptors and investigated by NMR spectroscopy and single crystal XRD. The interesting rivalry for HB acceptance between (sic)C= and X (F or OMe) is observed in the investigated molecules which leads to an unusual increase in the electron density at the site of one of the NH protons, reflecting in the high field resonance in the H-1 NMR spectrum. The NMR experimental findings and single crystal XRD are further reinforced by the DFT studies.

The development of methodologies for inducing and tailoring enantioselectivities of catalysts is an important issue in asymmetric catalysis. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that chiral molecular catalysts can be boosted from completely nonselective to highly enantioselective when installed in nanostructured metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Exfoliation of layered crystals is one of the most direct synthetic routes to unitrathin nanosheets, but its use in MOFs is limited by the availability of layered MOFs. We illustrate that layered MOFs can be designed using ligand-capped metal clusters and angular organic linkers. This leads to the synthesis of two three-dimensional (3D) layered porous MOFs from Zn-4-p-tert-butylsulfonyl calix[4]arene and chiral angular 1,1′-binaphthol/-biphenol dicarboxylic acids, which can be ultrasonic exfoliated into one- and two-layer nanosheets. The obtained MOF materials are efficient catalysts for asymmetric cascade condensation and cyclization of 2-aminobenzamide and aldehydes to produce 2,3-dihyroquinazolinones. While both binaphthol and biphenol display no enantioselectivity, restriction of their freedom in the MOFs leads to 56-90% and 46-72% ee, respectively, which are increased to 72-94% and 64-82% ee after exposure to external surfaces of the flexible nanosheets. Moreover, the MOF crystals and nanosheets exhibit highly sensitive fluorescent enhancement in the presence of chiral amino alcohols with enantioselectivity factors being, respectively, increased up to 1.4 and 2.3 times of the values of the diols, allowing them to be utilized in chiral sensing. Therefore, the observed enantioselectivities increase in the order organocatalyst < MOF crystals < MOF nanosheets in both catalysis and sensing. This work not only provides a strategy to make 3D layered MOFs and their untrathin nanosheets but also paves the way to utilize nanostructured MOFs to manipulate enantioselectivities of molecular catalysts. The application of phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) may lead to the extensive distribution in soils, while the role of straw biochar as a soil amendment on the transport and sorption of PUHs are still unclear. Thus, the transport and sorption behavior of three typical PUHs with rice straw biochar (RSB) was studied in both adsorption simulation experiments of aqueous solution and packed column experiments:the sorption mechanism of RSB to herbicides was investigated through batch sorption studies with three influencing factors including dosage of RSB, pH, and ionic strength (IS) with orthogonal test. The sorption coeff icients were improved significantly by increasing the dosage of RSB, while there was no obvious influence by enhancing the pH and IS value. The optimal sorption conditions (pH value at 3, IS at 0.1 M, and RSB dosage at 60 mg) of three herbicides were set and the maximum removal rates of Monuron, Diuron, and Linuron were 41.9%, 25%, and 56.8%, respectively. The co-transport process of RSB and PUHs were investigated under different RSB dosage, pH value, and IS value. The retention effect increased greatly with enhancing the RSB dosage and pH value. However, IS did not have a significant influence on the retention of RSB, and therefore it had little effect on the adsorption capacity, which was consistent with the results of sorption experiments. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) for co-transport were well simulated by the two-site non-equilibrium convection-dispersion equation (CDE). Most of the regression coefficients (R-2) were above 0.99, which uncovered the co-transport in packed column were affected by physical absorption and chemical forces. According to the fitting parameters analysis, the RSB particles and PUHs were subjected to a greater resistance and a stronger stability by reducing pH value in porous media. The presence of RSB increased the amount of dynamic sorption sites in the entire co-transport system, which led to a significant promotion of the PUHs’ sorption and interception.
