A facile and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of (2)-6-allyl-1-phenyl-1,2,5,6tetrahydro-7H-benzo[b][1,5]-diazonin-7-one and (Z)-1,6-diphenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-7H-benzo[b][1,5]-diazonin-7-one from anthranilamide via N-arylation/N-allylation and from isatoic anhydride via ring opening/N-arylation/N-allylation followed by ring closing metathesis using Grubbs-II catalyst as a key step. Grubbs-II catalyst was found to be superior over Grubbs-I catalyst in terms of reaction time and yield of the product, and the routes developed were suitable to synthesize benzo fused nine membered nitrogen heterocycles. The requirement of diallylated substrates with protected amine and amide nitrogen is suitable for RCM has been established for the synthesis of diazoninone derivatives. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The abiotic photochemical reactions that take place naturally in sunlit surface waters can degrade many contaminants that pose concern to water bodies for their potentially toxic and long-term effects. This works aims at assessing the ability of European rivers to photoproduce reactive transient intermediates, such as HO center dot radicals and the excited triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter ((CDOM)-C-3*), involved in pollutant degradation. A photochemical mapping of the steady-state concentrations of these transients was carried out by means of a suitable modeling tool, in the latitude belt between 40 and 50 degrees N. Such a map allowed for the prediction of the photochemical lifetimes of the phenylurea herbicide isoproturon (mostly undergoing photodegradation upon reaction with HO center dot and especially (CDOM)-C-3*) across different European countries. For some rivers, a more extensive dataset was available spanning the years 1990-2002, which allowed for the computation of the steady-state concentration of the carbonate radicals (CO3 center dot-). With these data, it was possible to assess the time trends of the photochemical half-lives of further contaminants (atrazine, ibuprofen, carbamazepine, and clofibric acid). The calculated lifetimes were in the range of days to weeks, which might or might not allow for efficient depollution depending on the river-water flow velocity.

Flexible fiber-type solid-state supercapacitors (FSCs) are demanded for energy storage of wearable soft electronics. A flexible carbon fiber (CF) with high electrical conductivity and good energy storage ability can act as the current collector and the active material simultaneously. Improving the energy storage ability of the CF without depositing active materials is highly promising to avoid active materials from peeling off, especially under bending conditions. In this study, the CF is treated with acid mixtures containing different HNO3 to H2SO4 ratios. The roughened surface and the production of graphene quantum dots and functional groups are achieved for the acid-treated CF, especially for the CF treated with the acid mixtures. The largely enhanced specific capacitance (C-L) is first obtained for the optimized CF electrode (641.08 mF/cm at 5 mV/s) treated with the acid mixture containing the HNO3 to H2SO4 ratio of 1 to 3. The FSC also shows a maximum energy density of 16.57 mu W h/cm at the power density of 62.50 mu W/cm, as well as a C-L retention of 77% and Coulombic efficiency of 100% in 5000 times of a charge/discharge cycling process. Excellent flexibility is also attained for the FSC with no shape distortion of cyclic voltammetry curves measured under the bending angle of 180 degrees and with 1000 times of repeated bending. This work proposes a simple acid treatment to largely enhance the energy storage ability of pure CF electrodes. The bifunctional substance with current collecting and energy storing abilities is expected to be well developed in the future for applying on numerous efficient flexible energy storage devices.

[1,2,4]Triazolo[3,4-b]quinazolin-5(1H)-ones with varied functionalization patterns were synthesized in a regioselective manner by reacting 2-thioxo-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one (2) with variously functionalized hydrazonoyl chlorides (38h). Phenylurea herbicides are persistent contaminants, which leads their transport to the surface and ground waters, affecting human and aquatic organisms. Different analytical methods have been reported for the detection of phenylureas; however, several of them are expensive, time-consuming, and require complex pretreatment steps. Here, we show a simple method for the simultaneous electrochemical determination of two phenylurea herbicides by differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (DPAdSV) using a modified platinum/chitosan electrode. The one-step synthesized platinum/chitosan PtNPs/CS was successfully characterized by TEM, XRPD, and FT-IR, and applied through the sensing platform designated as PtNPs/CS/GCE. This bio-based modified electrode is proposed for the first time for the individual and/or simultaneous electrochemical detection of the phenylurea herbicides diuron and isoproturon compounds extensively used worldwide that present a very similar chemical structure. Electrochemical and interfacial characteristics of the modified electrode were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was found that the oxidation mechanism of diuron and isoproturon occurs in two different pathways, with a peak-to-peak definition of ca. 0.15 V. Under differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (DPAdSV) optimized conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) was estimated as 7 mu g L-1 for isoproturon and 20 mu g L-1 for diumn (E-d = +0.8 V; t(d) = 100 s). The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of both analytes in river water samples, at three different levels, with a recovery range of 90-110%. The employment of the bio-based sensing platform PtNPs/CS/GCE allows a novel and easy analytical method to the multi-component phenylurea herbicides detection.

Spain is the first olive oil producer worldwide (representing around 45%), with more than 80% of its agricultural area dedicated to this crop. The goal of this study is to assess the environmental impact of the Spanish virgin olive oil production, attending to the farming and industrial phases. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is conducted for 5 harvests in approximately 4.000 ha of olive grove in Jaen, the largest producer region of Spain. The type of farming is the most representative in Spain: conventional (non-organic), with a medium-low slope, extensive (100-150 trees per ha) and around 60% dryland orchards. The industrial phase is based on 2-phase extraction process and olive pomace valorization. The functional unit (FU) chosen for the comparative analysis is 1 kg of unpacked virgin olive oil under a perspective from cradle to gate. One of the most representative categories, climate change, places the average environmental impact in 2.43 kg CO2 eq/kg, while the range is between 1.93 and 3.00 kg CO2 eq/kg depending on the harvest. Huge differences between values are observed in the farming phase and they are mostly caused by the virgin olive oil yield of every harvest. The carbon sequestration analyses and the impact produced per FU ranges from 43.78% (for 15/16 harvest) to 46.36% (for 17/18). The impact hotspots detected in the farming phase, in terms of climate change potential, are the categories of plant protection products and herbicides (24.11% of the average value) and fertilizers (20.01%). However, the environmental impact of the industrial phase is relatively constant, with a value of 0.547-0.554 kg of CO2 equivalent. A bioinspired iron(III)porphyrinic Zr-MOF, PCN-222(Fe), was modified by post-synthetic cluster metalation with iron(III) chloride, as a cheap, earth-abundant, and environmentally friendly metal precursor, towards formation a new multifunctional MOF, namely Fe@PCN-222(Fe). The MOF consists of bimetallic (Zr-oxo-Fe) nodes linked by Fe(III)porphyrin struts. The cluster metalation and pre-activation treatment of PCN-222(Fe) were performed cooperatively using the FeCl3. The respective MOF was characterized through various techniques, such as FT-IR, PXRD, ICP-AES, BET surface area, SEM, UV-Vis DRS, TGA/DSC, PL, and XPS analyses. The solid showed catalytic activity for one-pot tandem synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones from alcohols and 2-aminobenzamide through a three-consecutive-step reaction (oxidation-cyclization-oxidation) under visible light irradiation using air or oxygen without adding any additive. In addition, its catalytic performance was superior to that of the bare PCN-222(Fe) and the corresponding homogeneous catalysts. The experiments indicate that the solid MOF acts as both a photoredox and Lewis acid catalyst. Hot-filtration and Fe-leaching tests as well as reusability experiments confirm that the nominal MOF acts as an efficient reusable heterogeneous catalyst for at least three runs without significant decrease in its activity. This work demonstrates the potential of using MOFs as supports for single-site metal species towards preparation of multifunctional MOFs for modern organic transformations combining photocatalysis and catalysis. Click chemistry is a concept in which modular synthesis is used to rapidly find new molecules with desirable properties(1). Copper(I)-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) triazole annulation and sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) catalysis are widely regarded as click reactions(2-4), providing rapid access to their products in yields approaching 100% while being largely orthogonal to other reactions. Here we report another reaction to add to the click reaction family: the formation of azides from primary amines, one of the most abundant functional groups(5). The reaction uses just one equivalent of a simple diazotizing species, fluorosulfuryl azide(6-11) (FSO2N3), and enables the preparation of over 1,200 azides on 96-well plates in a safe and practical manner. This reliable transformation is a powerful tool for the CuAAC triazole annulation, the most widely used click reaction at present. This method greatly expands the number of accessible azides and 1,2,3-triazoles and, given the ubiquity of the CuAAC reaction, it should find application in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology and materials science.
