Micro-patterned hydrogels have received increasing attention in various research fields that need a fine structure and advanced functions compared to bulk hydrogels. For enhancing their performance, control of the size and distribution of pores in hydrogels is crucial. In particular, for the application of thermoresponsive hydrogels to a soft actuator, the characteristics of pores play an important role in enhancing the response time. We formed a porous structure in micro-patterns of polydiethylacrylamide (PDEAM), a thermoresponsive hydrogel, and analyzed the effect of pore size on the response time of the patterned hydrogels. Micro-patterned thermoresponsive hydrogels are fabricated by photo-crosslinking PDEAM copolymerized with benzophenone photo-crosslinker and polystyrene (PS) as a porogen. Pores sufficiently smaller than patterned objects, between a few micrometers to a few tens of micrometers, are successfully formed by controlling the content and molecular weight of PS. As the size and number of pores increase, the response time is improved, and the response time for swelling and deswelling is improved by up to 52 and 43% by blending PDEAM with 50 vol% of low molecular weight PS (5 kg/mol). This simple way to form a sub-millimeter scale hydrogel structure with controlled pores can be utilized in the emerging research fields, including 3D cell scaffolds, targeted drug delivery, and soft robotics.

A PPTS (pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate)-catalyzed bicyclization reaction of 2-isocyanobenzaldehydes as 1,5-dielectrophiles with various amines has been developed. The reaction not only provides a simple and efficient strategy for the assembly of structurally diverse fused quinazoline derivatives from readily available substrates under metal-free and mild conditions in a single step with only water and hydrogen as the by-products, but also opens the way to the application of o-formyl arylisocyanides in the synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

Due to serious side effects of benzimidazoles such as apoptosis and mitotic arrest, development of alternative anthelmintic drugs with comparable efficacy to target the acetylcholine receptors of parasites is considered very important to control this parasitic disease. Here we have developed an excellent method for synthesis of biscoumarins by employing a mild and efficient proline derived bifunctional thiourea catalyst bearing pyrrolidine and thiourea catalytic sites and tested their anthelmintic activity against helminth parasites Raillietina echinobothrida and Syphacia obvelata. The compounds 2a, 2j, 2k and 2o demonstrated much stronger anthelmintic activity against Raillietina echinobothrida in comparison to the standard drug, Praziquantel. Molecular docking simulations of the optimized compounds with beta -tubulin showed excellent binding interactions with several amino acid residues of the active site and the docking scores with beta -tubulin were found to be comparable to the in vitro anthelmintic activity.Graphical AbstractA series of biscoumarins were synthesized and they showed excellent anthelmintic properties in comparison to conventional benzimidazoles.

A photoinduced synthesis of S-aryl thiosulfonates through a three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sodium metabisulfite, and thiourea is achieved. The reaction scope generality with a range of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates is demonstrated. In this transformation, a radical coupling pathway is proposed with the insertion of sulfur dioxide in the presence of a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The organic sulfur motifs in S-aryl thiosulfonates originate from the convenient, cheap, and easily available thiourea and sodium metabisulfite.

The oxidation of a series of alkylaromatic compounds with H2O2 catalyzed by an imine-based non-heme iron complex prepared in situ by reaction of 2-picolylaldehyde, 2-picolylamine, and Fe(OTf)(2) in a 2 : 2 : 1 ratio leads to a marked chemoselectivity for aromatic ring hydroxylation over side-chain oxidation. This selectivity is herein investigated in detail. Side-chain/ring oxygenated product ratio was found to increase upon decreasing the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the benzylic C-H bond in line with expectation. Evidence for competitive reactions leading either to aromatic hydroxylation via electrophilic aromatic substitution or side-chain oxidation via benzylic hydrogen atom abstraction, promoted by a metal-based oxidant, has been provided by kinetic isotope effect analysis.

A one-pot quick and efficient multicomponent reaction has been developed for the synthesis of a new series of functionalized 8-hydroxy-4-phenyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline derivatives using 30 mol% ammonium acetate in ethanol as solvent. This economical protocol run smoothly to give variety of quinoline derivatives in 55% to 98% yield from inexpensive reagents and catalyst in mild reaction conditions. Various spectroscopic techniques like FTIR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS, and EI-MS were used to study and confirm their structure.

An environmentally friendly, inexpensive, carbocatalyst, graphene oxide (GO) promoted efficient, metal-free transamidation of various carboxamides with aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic amines is demonstrated. The protocol is equally applicable to phthalimide, urea, and thioamide determining its adaptability. The oxygenated functionalities such as carbonyl (C=O), epoxy (O), carboxyl (COOH) and hydroxyl (OH), present on graphene oxide surface impart acidic properties to the catalyst. The graphene oxide being heterogeneous in nature, work efficiently under solvent-free reaction conditions providing desired products in good to excellent yields. The one-pot synthesis of 2,3-Dihydro-5H-benzo[b]-1,4-thiazepin-4-one moiety by GO catalyzed Aza Michael addition followed by intramolecular transamidation is also described. A plausible reaction mechanistic pathway involving H-bonding is discussed. The graphene oxide can be recycled and reused up to five cycles without much loss in catalytic activity.

A sp(3) C-H bond functionalization and C – C bond cleavage were realized by AIBN/0 2 catalyst system, providing a series of benzophenones under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic study shows that a peroxide intermediate is involved in this transformation, and in the case of diphenylmethanes, the sp(3) C-C bond is cleaved through the peroxide rearrangement, which might provides a new way to cleave relatively strong C-C bond and be applied to more general C-C bond activation. Organic molecules bearing acetoxy moieties are important functionalities in natural products, drugs, and agricultural chemicals. Synthesis of such molecules via transition metal-catalyzed C-O bond formation can be achieved in the presence of a carefully chosen directing group to alleviate the challenges associated with regioselectivity. An alternative approach is to use ubiquitous carboxylic acids as starting materials and perform a decarboxylative coupling. Herein, we report conditions for a photocatalytic decarboxylative C-O bond formation reaction that provides rapid and facile access to the corresponding acetoxylated products. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the reaction operates via oxidation of the carboxylate followed by rapid decarboxylation and oxidation by Cu(OAc)(2).
