Molecular structure in correlation with electrochemical properties of mixed-ligand cobalt(III) complexes

Four mixed-ligand cobalt(III) complexes (1-4) of the general formula [Co(Rdtc)cyclam](ClO4)(2) and [Co(Rac)cyclam](ClO4)(2) (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; Rdtc = thiomorpholine-(Timdtc) or 2-methylpiperidine-(2-Mepipdtc) dithiocarbamates; Rac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionato (Hfac) or 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato (Tmhd), respectively) were electrochemically examined on a glassy carbon and an iron electrode in perchloric acid solution. The obtained results showed the influence of these complexes on hydrogen evolution, the oxygen reduction reaction and iron dissolution. The exhibited effects of the complexes on these reactions depend on structure related to the bidentate dithiocarbamato or beta-diketonato ligand. Gold-Decorated Chiral Macroporous Films by the Self-Assembly of Functionalised Block Copolymers

We describe a new and very versatile method to place chosen chemical functionalities at the edge of the pores of macroporous materials. The method is based on the synthesis and self-assembly of inorganic block copolymers (BCPs) having chiral rigid segments bearing controllable quantities of randomly distributed functional groups. The synthesis of a series of optically active block copolyphosphazenes (PP) with the general formula [NP(R-O2C20H12)(0.9)(FG)(0.2)](n)-b-[NPMePh](m) (FG=-OC5H4N (6), -NC4H8S (7), and -NC4H8O (8)), was accomplished by the sequential living cationic polycondensation of N-silylphosphoranimines, using the mono-end-capped initiator [Ph3PNPCl3][Cl] (3). The self-assembly of the phosphazene BCPs 6-8 led to chiral porous films. The functionality present on those polymers affected their self-assembly behaviour resulting in the formation of pores of different diameters (D-n=111 (6), 53 (7) and 77nm (8)). The specific functionalisation of the pores was proven by decorating the films with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Thus, the BCPs 6 and 7, having pyridine and thiomorpholine groups, respectively, were treated with HAuCl4, followed by reduction with NaBH4, yielding a new type of block copolyphosphazenes, which self-assembled into chiral porous films specifically decorated with AuNPs at the edge of the pores.

Oxazolidinones 6 and 8 exhibit MIC(90) values of 0.50 mu g/mL or less against a panel of organisms consisting of five drug-sensitive and five multidrug-resistant strains of M. tuberculosis, with 6 being the most active congener. Potent in vitro activity against other mycobacterial species was also demonstrated by 6. For example, 6 exhibited excellent in vitro activity against multiple clinical isolates of Mycobacterium avium complex (MIC’s = 0.5-4 mu g/mL). The effect of heterocyclic S,S ‘-ligands on the electrochemical properties of some cobalt(III) complexes in acid

Eight mixed-ligand cobalt(III) complexes with the macrocyclic amine 1,4,8,11 -tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) and a heterocyclic dithiocarbamate (Rdtc(-)) i.e., morpholine- (Morphdtc), thiomorpholine- (Timdtc), piperazine- (Pzdtc), N-methylpiperazine- (Mepzdtc), piperidine- (Pipdtc), 2-, 3- or 4-methylpiperidine- (2-, 3- and 4-Mepipdtc) carbodithionato-S,S ions, of the general formula [Co(cyclam)Rdtc](ClO4)(2), were investigated in deoxygenated 0.1 M HClO4 solutions. Cyclic voltammetry data at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode demonstrate a redox reaction of cobalt(III) from the complexes at potentials strongly influenced by the presence of different heterocyclic Rdtc(-) ligands. In this respect, the complexes were separated into two groups: the first, with a heteroatom O, S or N in the heterocyclic ring, and the second, with a methyl group on the piperidine ring of the Rdtc(-) ligand. Anodic polarization of an Fe electrode in the presence of the complexes shows their influence not only on the dissolution of iron but also on the hydrogen evolution reactions and on this basis complexes the complexes could be divided into the same two groups. It was found that the weaker the inhibiting effect of the free heterocyclic amines is, the significantly higher is the efficiency of the corresponding complexes.

One polymer composition, various morphologies: the decisive influence of conditions on the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) ofN-acryloyl thiomorpholine

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) represents a powerful technique for the preparation of nanostructures comprising various morphologies. Herein, we demonstrate that the recently introduced monomerN-acryloylthiomorpholine (NAT) features a unique self-assembly behaviour during an aqueous PISA. The one-pot, aqueous RAFT dispersion polymerization starting from short poly(N-acryloylmorpholine) (PNAM) enables access to all common solution morphologies including spheres, worms, vesicles and lamellae, at very low molar masses (< 8 kDa). Moreover, all these structures can be obtained for the same polymer composition and size by the variation of the polymerization temperature and concentration of the monomer. This exceptional self-assembly behavior is associated with the combination of a high glass transition temperature, excellent water solubility of the monomer, and the early onset of aggregation during the polymerization, which stabilizes the morphology at different stages. This PISA system opens up new opportunities to reproducibly create versatile, functional nanostructures and enables an independent evaluation of morphology-property relationships, as it is exemplarily shown for the oxidative degradation of spherical and wormlike micelles, as well as vesicles.
