The development of efficient and modular synthetic methods for the synthesis of diverse collection of privileged substructures needed for a drug design and discovery campaign is highly desirable. Benzoxazepine and indolopyrazine ring systems form the core structures of distinct members of biologically significant molecules. Several members of these families have gained attention due to their broad biological activities, which depend on the type of ring-fusion and peripheral substitution patterns. Despite the potential applications of these privileged substructures in drug discovery, efficient, atom economic, and modular strategies for their access are underdeveloped. Herein, a one-step build/couple/pair strategy that uniquely allows access to diversely functionalized benzoxazepine and indolopyrazine scaffolds is described. The methodology features a one-pot combination of condensation, Mannich, oxidation, and aza-Michael addition reactions, employing a variety of functionalized anilines and aldehydes suitably poised with Micheal acceptor. Scandium triflate (Sc(OTf)(3)) in acetonitrile (ACN) was found to promote the construction of benzoxazepines scaffolds, while sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) in aqueous EtOH rapidly enhanced the cascade reaction that led to diverse collections of indolopyrazine frameworks. These protocols represent modular, efficient, and atom-economic access of constrained benzoxazepine and indolopyrazine systems with more than 10 points of diversity and large substrate tolerance.

In the current research, much attention is paid to heterogenized nanostructure. Herein, we report the green synthesis magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of cobalt ferrite by the immobilization of erbium (Er) coated with folic acid (FA) which show effective catalytic properties and recyclability. Full characterizations with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray atomic mapping, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy techniques were undertaken to uncover structural properties of the prepared magnetic catalyst. The obtained nanohybrid complexes as efficient, recyclable, and green heterogeneous systems pave the way for producing pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidinone and dihydropyrano[3,2-c]chromenes derivatives by the one-pot three-component condensation reaction of various aldehydes, malononitrile, and hydroxycoumarin or barbituric acid in green condition. This easily prepared organometalic catalyst presents many superiorities such as operational simplicity, high yield, short reaction time, utilization of commercially available or easily accessible starting materials, eco-friendly properties, and excellent purity. Most importantly, erbium-FA-coated CoFe2O4 can be easily separated and recycled from the reaction system using an external magnetic field. The magnetically recoverable biocatalyst can be recycled and reused six times while maintaining high activities. The activity of the magnetic catalyst can be maintained at more than 80% of that of the previous cycle. This research solves the recovery problem encountered in industrial applications of biocatalysts and presents a clean and green method for preparing pyrimidinones and chromenes.

The effective control of biointerfacial interactions is of outstanding interest in a broad range of biomedical applications, ranging from cell culture tools to biosensors and implantable medical devices. For many of these applications, highly specific interactions between cells and material surfaces are desired. Sophisticated control over these interactions requires reducing or preventing non-specific interactions on the one hand and displaying highly specific signals that can be recognized by extracellular receptors on the other. We have recently developed ultra-low fouling coatings that can be applied in a single step using photoreactive copolymers of 2-hydroxypropyl acrylamide and N-benzophenone acrylamide. Here, we have expanded this approach by incorporating polymerizable peptide monomers into these copolymers. The monomers QQGWFGAGK(acrylamide) and acrylamide-GAGQQGWF were synthesized after identifying the QQGWF sequence as a binding motif for CD44 by phage display for the first time. Our results demonstrate that UV-crosslinked coatings fabricated using the QQGWFGAGK(acrylamide) monomer are effective at selectively binding hMSC in the presence of HepG2 and HEK293 cells due to the difference in CD44 expression. Our results also demonstrate that the peptide modified coatings retain their low biofouling character using a BCA protein binding assay as well as an E. coli bacterial attachment assay over a 24 h period. Our approach provides an alternative to traditional integrin-mediated selective cell binding on surfaces and opens the door to new diagnostic applications, exploiting the fact that the transmembrane protein CD44 is highly expressed in multiple diseases.

From the view of energy saving and environment protection, green catalysis has become one of the most important goals of chemists, including both the green preparation of catalyst and the highly efficient catalysis under mild reaction condition. Herein, N,N-dimethylaminopropyl-functionalized hybrid zeolite is firstly synthesized by one-step non-templating method, which is characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform IR, thermogravimetric analysis, element analysis, scanning electron microscope, water contact angle measurements, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, and N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements. The functionalized hybrid zeolite can be directly used as base catalyst without any post modification and achieve high yields of corresponding products in the Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde (or substituted benzaldehyde) with ethyl cyanoacetate at room temperature by using ethanol as solvent. By the comparison with other zeolite catalysts, the unique and excellent catalytic properties of N,N-dimethylaminopropyl-functionalized hybrid zeolite was ascribed to not only the synergic effect of basic property and hydrophobic/lipophilicity of the organic groups, but also the easier accessibility of bulky substrate molecules with highly exposed catalytic active sites over the solid catalyst. The recycling and control experiments show that it owes excellent reusable stability.

In this study, in-situ synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles was utilized as an effective approach to prepare poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinyl alcohol)-graft-acrylonitrile/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (PVA-g-AN/HEMA) membranes with ZnO nanoparticles. The membranes were characterized by using Frourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and contact angle measurements. Both of the membranes were utilized in separation of acetone/water mixtures via pervaporation technique and the optimum conditions regarding ZnO content within the membranes, acetone content in the feed solution and operating temperature were determined. PVA-g-AN/HEMA-ZnO nanocomposite membranes showed high permeation rate but low separation factor compared to PVA-ZnO nanocomposite membranes. Permeation rate and separation factor values were found to be in the range of 0.028-0.137 and 0.035-0.174 kg m(-2) h(-1), 17.61-325 and 9.4-84.5 depending on the pervaporation conditions for PVA-ZnO and PVA-g-AN/HEMA-ZnO nanocomposite membranes, respectively. In the present work, we report the design and fabrication of a copper-containing ionic liquid supported magnetic nanocatalyst via a convenient and straightforward synthetic approach for the formation of 2-phenylquinazolin-4(3H)-ones using o-aminobenzamide and benzaldehydes as the reaction partners. The successful formation and properties of the as-prepared catalyst have been thoroughly investigated using diverse physico-chemical techniques including FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, ICP, VSM, BET and TGA. Using this nanocatalytic system, a variety of 2-phenylquinazolin-4(3H)-ones are synthesized in excellent yields with operational ease and short reaction times in an environmentally preferable solvent under open air and without using any external oxidizing agent. Besides, the catalyst possessed facile magnetic recoverability and remarkable reusability for six consecutive runs without any appreciable decrease in the catalytic efficiency.

An efficient, green and rapid protocol for one-pot synthesis of substituted imidazoles from isatin, aryl/hetero-aryl aldehydes and ammonium acetate in presence of CuO-TiO2-GO nanocomposite as catalyst under microwave irradiation has been reported in this article. The CuO-TiO2-GO nanocomposite was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Further, the prepared composite was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, EDS, TEM, Raman and TGA techniques. The oxidation of a series of alkylaromatic compounds with H2O2 catalyzed by an imine-based non-heme iron complex prepared in situ by reaction of 2-picolylaldehyde, 2-picolylamine, and Fe(OTf)(2) in a 2 : 2 : 1 ratio leads to a marked chemoselectivity for aromatic ring hydroxylation over side-chain oxidation. This selectivity is herein investigated in detail. Evidence for competitive reactions leading either to aromatic hydroxylation via electrophilic aromatic substitution or side-chain oxidation via benzylic hydrogen atom abstraction, promoted by a metal-based oxidant, has been provided by kinetic isotope effect analysis.
