Study Objective: To investigate whether the rate of increase in the performance of abdominal myomectomy over a laparoscopic approach after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety communication regarding morcellator use for myomectomy differs among races. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement data. Patients: Patients aged 18 to 55 years who underwent either laparoscopic or abdominal myomectomy, excluding malignant cases, emergency cases, operations performed by nongynecologic specialists, and cases in which myomectomy was performed during cesarean section. Measurements and Main Results: The odds ratios of abdominal myomectomy over laparoscopic myomectomy before and after the release of the FDA communication were calculated in 3 race categories: white, African American, and other races. In a logistic regression analysis adjusted for possible confounders, including all races, the odds ratio of abdominal myomectomy before and after the FDA communication was 1.30 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.20-1.41; p <. 001). In a logistic regression analysis with a product term of FDA communication exposure and race as a possible effect modifier, the African American population showed a significantly greater change in the odds of abdominal myomectomy over laparoscopic myomectomy in comparison with the white population (1.22; 95% CI, 1.02-1.47; p =.03). Inhibition of cyclin dependent kinase 4 (Cdk4) prevents cancer cells from entering the early G(0)/G(1) phase of the cell division cycle whereas inhibiting tubulin polymerization blocks cancer cells’ ability to undergo mitosis (M) late in the cell cycle. We had reported earlier that two non-planar and relatively non-toxic fascaplysin derivatives, an indole and a tryptoline, inhibit Cdk4 with IC50 values of 6.2 and 10 mu M, respectively. Serendipitously, we had also found that they inhibited tubulin polymerization. The molecules were efficacious in mouse tumor models. We have now identified Cink4T in a 59-compound quinazolinone library, designed on the basis of ligand-based virtual screening, as a compound that inhibits Cdk4 and tubulin. Its IC50 value for Cdk4 inhibition is 0.47 mu M and >50 mu M for inhibition of Cdk1, Cdk2, Cdk6, Cdk9. Cink4T inhibits tubulin polymerization with an IC50 of 0.6 mu M. Molecular modelling studies on Cink4T with Cdk4 and tubulin crystal structures lend support to these observations. Cancer cell cycle analyses confirm that Cink4T blocks cells at both G(0)/G(1) and M phases as it should if it were to inhibit both Cdk4 and tubulin polymerization. Our results show, for the very first time, that virtual screening can be used to design novel inhibitors that can potently block two crucial phases of the cell division cycle. A new aromatic diamine, 10,10-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone (BAPA) has been synthesized from anthrone via three-step procedure. Direct phosphorylation polycondensation of BAPA with various aromatic dicarboxylic acids produced a series of cardo poly(ether amide)s with inherent viscosities of 0.97-1.29 dL g(-1). All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and pyridine at room temperature, and afforded transparent, strong, and flexible films upon casting from DMAc solvent. The resulting poly(ether amide)s had glass transition temperatures of 254-316 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 495-524 degrees C, and char yields of 55-70% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. These polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strengths of 81.6-104.7 MPa, tensile moduli of 1.8-2.4 GPa, and elongations at break of 8-15%.

Background: The reason why patients photosensitized to the drug ketoprofen (KP) may develop severe photoallergic skin reactions to octocrylene (OCT), an organic ultraviolet filter in sunscreens and cosmetics, remains largely unknown. OCT can be synthesized by using unsubstituted benzophenone (BP), a possible human carcinogen. Objectives: To verify if, and to what extent, BP residues are present in OCT-containing consumer products. Methods: The raw material of OCT and 39 skincare products, of which 28 contain OCT, were chemically analysed for the presence of BP by means of liquid chromatography. Results: In the OCT raw material and in all 28 OCT-containing products the presence of BP could be demonstrated, mostly in concentrations above 10 ppm (0.001%), whereas a majority of OCT-free products (8/11, 73%) did not contain BP. Moreover, BP concentrations significantly increased, in a time- and temperature-dependent manner, likely due to the additional degradation of OCT. Conclusion: Photoallergic contact dermatitis from OCT in patients photosensitized to KP might rely on residual BP impurities. Toxicological and ecological studies that evaluate the safety of OCT might also need to consider the concomitant presence of BP.

We report the synthesis of quinolines using cyclopropenes and an azidobenziodazolone (ABZ) hypervalent iodine reagent as an azide radical source under visible-light irradiation. Multisubstituted quinoline products were obtained in 34-81% yield. The reaction was most efficient for 3-trifluoromethylcyclopropenes, affording valuable 4-trifluoromethylquinolines. The transformation probably proceeds through the cyclization of an iminyl radical formed by the addition of the azide radical on the cyclopropene double bond, followed by ring-opening and fragmentation.

Liquid phase tandem Knoevenagel-Michael condensation of various aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with barbituric acid or 2-thiobarbituric acid and malononitrile was studied in a one-pot three-component reaction. For the first time, TMDP was employed as a safe and efficient solvent and/or catalyst in the liquid and aqueous ethanol medium, respectively, for the practical and eco-friendly Knoevenagel-Michael condensation. The reactions were carried out by using greener procedures, including a) the use of TMDP as an N-heterocycle organocatalyst in a green medium including water and ethanol (1:1 v/v) at reflux temperature, and b) the use of TMDP as a dual solvent-catalyst at 65 degrees C in the absence of any solvent. High to excellent yields of the desired pyrano[2,3-d] pyrimidinones were obtained under the two earlier mentioned conditions. The current methodologies have advantages, including (a) avoiding hazardous, toxic, volatile, and flammable materials and solvents, (b) avoiding tedious processes, harsh conditions, and multiple steps for the preparation of catalysts, (c) using a less toxic and noncorrosive catalyst, (d) minimizing hazardous waste generation and simple workup process, and (e) high recyclability of TMDP. Another important result of this work is that the TMDP can be a promising alternative for toxic, volatile, and flammable base reagents such as piperidine and triethylamine in liquid phase organic syntheses owing to its unique properties such as being less toxic, nonflammable, and nonvolatile, and having a low melting point, broad liquid range temperature, high thermal stability, and safe handling and storage.

Media coverage of disasters potentially damages mental health. Moreover, its effects may differ as recipients may have different emotional responses toward media. The present study examined whether social capital, known to be protective against mental problems, influences a recipient’s emotional response toward news media broadcasting of natural disasters via newspapers, television and internet in Japan. Three social capital components, social participation, social support and cognitive social capital, were considered in the present study as each component reportedly had different effect on mental health. This nationwide cross-sectional survey was undertaken in 2015 among 1,200 Japanese citizens aged 15 to 79 years who were selected using the multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected via the drop-off pick-up method using a printed structured questionnaire. Negative and positive emotions were classified based on recipients’ responses against news media. Among 1,190 participants who reported emotions toward news media, 30.9% (368) had experienced any natural disasters, 37.4% (445) belonged to at least one formal or informal organization (social participation), 40.2% (478) had high social support, and 68.8% (819) had high cognitive social capital. High social support was associated with both reduced negative emotional response (OR 0.66, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.47-0.93) and increased positive emotional response (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.04-2.12) in multivariate analyses, while high cognitive social capital was only associated with increased positive emotional response (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.11-2.37). These results suggest protective effects of social support and cognitive social capital against news media coverage of natural disasters.

Rubrene is the most widely used triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) emitter for NIR-to-vis photon upconversion (UC), however, strong singlet fission (SF) in the solid films quenches its emission and hampers practical TTA-UC applications. Herein, the issue was addressed by decorating the rubrene with sterically demanding 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl side-moieties at the periphery and the core to result in 40-fold enhancement of the emission quantum yield. Nevertheless, the sterically crowded rubrenes were found to exhibit lower sensitized UC performance compared to the conventional rubrene, which was ascribed to inefficient triplet energy transfer from a sensitizer and poor TTA (for the core-modified rubrene only). By exploiting the distinct feature of rubrenes to simultaneously express both SF and TTA in the solid films, their TTA efficiency was assessed independently from TET in the sensitizer-free films. The results implied a trade-off between suppressed SF and enhanced TTA in the rubrene emitters, which could be addressed via careful selection of the degree of sterical hindrance and linking position of the side-moieties. Thorough analysis of the prompt and delayed fluorescence revealed that the bulky side-moieties at the periphery do not impede TTA, i.e., it is as efficient as that of unsubstituted rubrene, whereas these moieties linked directly to the core suppress TTA dramatically. The current study unveils an advantage of the peripheral linking vs. core linking pattern of rubrene emitters, thereby providing valuable insights for their rational modification towards improved NIR-to-vis UC efficiency in the solid state.
