Background. International studies prove the high burden of mental illnesses among refugees. Postmigration stressors in the country of refugemay affect themental health and result in depression. Objectives. The study examines whether postmigration stressors are associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms among adult refugees in Germany. Methods. Secondary data analysis based on cross-sectional data of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees 2016 (N= 4465) that is representative for Germany. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated with binary logistic regression models to examine associations between depression and sociodemographic, postmigration, and psychosocial factors. Results. Depressive symptoms show 19.4% of the surveyed refugees. Almost all selected postmigration stressors are significantly associated with depression after adjustment for sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Unemployment (aOR= 1.48 [1.04-2.12]), loneliness (aOR= 1.14 [1.10-1.18]), and a rejected or undecided asylum application (aOR= 1.34 [1.06-1.70]) increase the odds of depressive symptoms, whereas asylum interviews (aOR= 0.71 [0.56-0.91]) and higher housing satisfaction (aOR= 0.94 [0.91-0.98]) lower the odds of depression. Conclusions. Postmigration stress is associated with the occurrence of depressive symptoms. Sociopolitical interventions considering stressful and protective factors of the postmigration phase can reduce the burden of mental disorders in refugee populations.

Chiral hyperbranched polymers (HBP) containing cinchona alkaloids were synthesized using a Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling polymerization reaction between a cinchona squaramide dimer and tri- or tetrasubstituted aromatic iodides. This is a new type of polymeric chiral organocatalyst. We found that the as-obtained chiral HBPs show excellent catalytic activity in the asymmetric Michael reaction. Almost perfect enantioselectivity (>99% ee) was achieved in the reaction of beta-ketoester and trans-beta-nitrostyrene. A series of novel tricyclic quinazolinone-iminosugars 1 (a-c) were synthesized from the benzyl protected sugars through three steps. Firstly, the benzyl protected sugar (aldehyde) 5 reacted with o-aminobenzamide by the iodine-induced oxidative condensation to afford the corresponding aldo-quizanolinone 6. Secondly, through the intramolecular cyclization of the unprotected OH and the amide NH in 6, the tricyclic compounds 7 and 8 were constructed by the key Mitsunobu reaction. Finally, removal of the benzyl group gave the target tricyclic quinazolinone-iminosugars 1. The protocol was effective for the preparation of the tricyclic iminosugars in satisfactory yield. Interestingly, an unusual C-2 epimerization was observed with D-mannose and D-ribose compounds under the conditions of the Mitsunobu reaction that generated the products having the trans configuration at the C-2 and C-3 positions. Unfortunately, such tricyclic quinazolinone-iminosugars showed no inhibitory effects on the tested five glycosidases.

Due to the fact that tyrosinase is responsible for biosynthesis and regulation of melanins and browning food products, tyrosinase inhibitors can be favorable agents in cosmetics and medicinal industries. A series of novel 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzohydrazide were designed, synthesized, and their new application as tyrosinase inhibitors was also disclosed. Based on in vitro tyrosinase inhibitory assay, 4d as the strongest inhibitor of tyrosinase with an IC50 value of 7.57 mu M showed approximately 2.5-fold better inhibition than kojic acid as positive control followed by two compounds 4b (IC50 = 8.19 +/- 0.25 mu M) and 4j (IC50 = 8.92 +/- 0.016) which displayed preferable tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Detailed investigations on the mechanism of action of the 4d reported mix type of inhibition. More importantly, molecular modeling assessments proposed the ability of 4d for potential interaction with Cu (metal)-His (residue) within tyrosinase active site. Overall, 4d is a promising candidate for the development of anti-tyrosinase agents.

A facile and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of (2)-6-allyl-1-phenyl-1,2,5,6tetrahydro-7H-benzo[b][1,5]-diazonin-7-one and (Z)-1,6-diphenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-7H-benzo[b][1,5]-diazonin-7-one from anthranilamide via N-arylation/N-allylation and from isatoic anhydride via ring opening/N-arylation/N-allylation followed by ring closing metathesis using Grubbs-II catalyst as a key step. Grubbs-II catalyst was found to be superior over Grubbs-I catalyst in terms of reaction time and yield of the product, and the routes developed were suitable to synthesize benzo fused nine membered nitrogen heterocycles. Fluorescent photoswitches are highly attractive, because they hold great promises for photonic devices and imaging. However, a limited number of reversible switches with a response to light have been achieved in the solid state. Here, we report reversible dual fluorescent photoswitching characteristics in the solid state of spiropyran (SP)-functionalized tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives. These photoswitches exhibit two distinct and selectively addressable states, a cyan fluorescence and a red fluorescence, which can be conveyed into each other in a reversible feature upon irradiation with alternating UV and visible light. Detailed spectroscopic and theoretical studies suggest that the nonplanar molecular conformation of TPE moieties leads to large free volumes, which facilitates the reversible photoisomerization of SP. The serine hydrolase monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) is involved in a plethora of pathological conditions, in particular pain and inflammation, various types of cancer, metabolic, neurological and cardiovascular disorders, and is therefore a promising target for drug development. Although a large number of irreversible-acting MAGL inhibitors have been discovered over the past years, there are only few compounds known so far which inhibit the enzyme in a reversible manner. Therefore, much effort is put into the development of novel chemical entities showing reversible inhibitory behavior, which is thought to cause less undesired side effects. To explore a wide range of chemical structures as MAGL binders, we have applied a virtual screening approach by docking small molecules into the crystal structure of human MAGL (hMAGL) and envisaged a library of 45 selected compounds which were then synthesized. Biochemical investigations included the determination of the inhibitory potency on hMAGL and two related hydrolases, i.e. human fatty acid amide hydrolase (hFAAH) and murine cholesterol esterase (mCEase). The most promising candidates from theses analyses, i.e. three w-quinazolinonylalkyl aryl ureas bearing alkyl spacers of three to five methylene groups, exhibited IC50 values of 20-41 mu M and reversible, detergent-insensitive behavior towards hMAGL. Among these compounds, the inhibitor 1-(3,5-bis(tri-fluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(4-(4-oxo-3,4 dihydroquinazolin-2-yl)butyl)urea (96) was selected for further kinetic characterization, yielding a dissociation constant K-i = 15.4 mu M and a mixed-type inhibition with a pronounced competitive component (alpha = 8.94). This mode of inhibition was further supported by a docking experiment, which suggested that the inhibitor occupies the substrate binding pocket of hMAGL.

In this study, novel quinazolinones were designed, synthesized, characterized by FT-IR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR spectral data, and LC-MS. New compounds inhibitory activities on urease were assessed. All of the compounds exhibited potent urease inhibitory activities. Especially in the synthesized compounds, 2-benzyl-3-({5-[(4-nitrophenyl)amino]-1,3,4-thiadiazol2-yl}methyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one has the best inhibitory effect against Jack bean urease with IC50 = 3.30 +/- 0.09 mu g/mL. And also, N-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-[(4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetyl] hydrazinecarbothioamide, N-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-[(4-oxoquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)acetyl] hydrazinecarbothioamide, and 2-benzyl-3-({5-[(4-fluorophenyl)amino]-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2yl} methyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one have best activities among the synthesized compounds.

Some antagonistic bacteria contribute to the management of plant diseases by stimulating the host natural defense and/or by providing direct biocontrol of pathogens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biocontrol performances and the ability to induce a systemic response to crown gall of four strains belonging to Bacillus and Pseudomonas genera. Evaluation of in vitro antagonistic ability showed that the four bacteria had a different spectrum of activity against the three tested strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens. A delay in time of appearance and a significant reduction of the tumor size were observed in tomato plants obtained by bio-primed seeds and stem inoculated with A. tumefaciens. Seed priming with antagonistic strains stimulated some systemic defense mechanisms in tomato plants that can be related to the reduction of disease symptoms induced by A. tumefaciens. Both antagonists and A. tumefaciens strains induced variations in phenol content and peroxidase activity while polyphenol oxidase activity was mainly affected by the single A. tumefaciens strain. The response was different in relation to the various combinations of antagonist/pathogen, however Pseudomonas brassicacearum EPR3 strain was the most effective strain.
