This is the first report on a facile tandem route for synthesizing quinazolinones at room temperature from various aminobenzamides and in situ-generated aldehydes. The latter was formed via C=C bond cleavage, and the overall reaction proceeded using molecular oxygen as a clean oxidant in the absence of a photocatalyst. Visible light, which was indispensable for the entire course of the reaction, played multiple roles. It initially cleaved styrene to an aldehyde, then facilitated its cyclization with an o-substituted aniline, and finally promoted the dehydrogenation of the cyclized intermediate. The previous step provided the feedstock for the next step in the reaction, thereby preventing volatilization, oxidation, and polymerization of the aldehyde. Thus, the overall process is simple, environmentally benign, and economically feasible.

The organic ligands with good coordination ability to Eu(III) ion attracted great attention, but the preparation of multifunctional organic ligands with excellent performance and the potential application was still a challenge in the field of rare earth coordination. In this work, a series of Schiff-base ligands and their corresponding Eu(III) complexes were successfully prepared. The ligands L1-4 exhibited typical AIE properties with various fluorescence emissions and high fluorescence quantum yields in an aggregated state. The luminescence intensity and luminescence lifetime of Eu(III) complexes were investigated by comparing different substituents of ligands. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the electronegativity of the ligands L1-4 changed with the change of the substituents on the salicylaldehyde, which led to the phenomenon that the ligands exhibited diverse fluorescence emission from green to orange (maximum emission wavelengths were 525 nm, 546 nm 569 nm and 582 nm, respectively). All target Eu(III) complexes exhibited red luminescence of Eu(III) ions, accompanied by outstanding thermal stability and long luminescence lifetime. The effect of various substituent groups on luminescence intensity and luminescence lifetime of complexes was ordered: EuL3(Phen) (NO3)(3) > EuL2(Phen)(NO3)(3) > EuL1(Phen)(NO3)(3) > EuL4(Phen)(NO3)(3). Based on the above results, all ligands and corresponding target Eu(III) complexes had good application prospects in the field of optical materials.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mutagenic and carcinogenic. 16 PAHs as priority pollutants listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency were usually monitored. Therefore, multiple potentially toxic polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are not monitored. In this study, atmospheric particulate matter samples from Beijing were analyzed using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight (GC x GC-TOF) mass spectrometry. The FT-ICR data detected high molecular weight PAHs, alkylated PAHs (APAHs) and heteroatom PAHs. The GC x GC-TOF data tentatively identified 386 PACs in five categories of identification confidence. Twenty-one spectra in the unknown class were manually resolved. Eighty-two PACs with high identification confidence were proposed for further research. The identities of five PAHs and five APAHs that are currently not regulated were confirmed using available standards and quantified in some samples. Some of these PACs, such as dibenzo[a,e]pyrene (C22H14) and 1-methylpyrene (C17H12), should be of concern because of their contamination levels and the high toxicities of themselves and/or their derivatives. This study highlights the possibility of expanding the traditional lists of PAHs to improve pollution control and risk assessment accuracy.

The possibility of a single-stage solvent-free stereoselective synthesis of a spirocyclic compound from the natural bicyclic monoterpenoid (-)-fenchone and anthranilamide has been shown for the first time. The molecular and crystal structure of (1R,2S,4S)-1,3,3-trimethyl-10H-spiro[bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,2′-quinazolin]-4′(3’H)-one, C17H22N2O, was established by X-ray diffraction though the chirality was assumed via the known reactant connectivity and H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. It has shown that in the molecule, for steric reasons, there is an elongation of the Me2C-C(N)N bond to 1.603 (5) A degrees. The formation of dimers via N-H center dot center dot center dot O C hydrogen bonds with an interaction energy of 93.30 kJ mol(-1) and through cavities (33.7% of the unit-cell volume) was established in the packing of the molecules. There are no pi-stacking interactions in the structure.

A method for in situ photografting during direct laser writing by two-photon polymerization is presented. The technique serves as a powerful approach to the formation of covalent bonds between 3D photoresist structures and thermoplastic surfaces. By leveraging the same laser for both pattern generation and localized surface reactions, crosslinking between the bulk photoresist and thermoplastic surface is achieved during polymerization. When applied to in-channel direct laser writing for microfluidic device fabrication, the process yields exceptionally strong adhesion and robust bond interfaces that can withstand pressure gradients as high as 7 MPa through proper channel design, photoinitiator selection, and processing conditions.

We report aggregation induced emission (AIE) driven polysaccharide polymersomes as fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanoprobes to study their intracellular enzyme-responsive delivery by real-time live-cell confocal microscopy bio-imaging techniques. An AIE active tetraphenylethylene (TPE) optical chromophore and plant-based vesicular directing hydrophobic unit were grafted on clinically relevant polysaccharide-dextran via enzyme-cleavable aliphatic ester chemical linkages. The TPE-tagged dextran self-assembled as 180 +/- 20 nm blue-luminescent polymersomes in aqueous medium and exhibited excellent encapsulation capabilities for water soluble Rose Bengal (RB) and water insoluble Nile red (NR) fluorophores. The selective photoexcitation of the TPE chromophore enabled the FRET process between the TPE donor and RB (or NR) acceptor molecule in <50 angstrom Forster distance afforded by the polymersome. The FRET probe was very stable under extracellular conditions and it exclusively underwent lysosomal esterase enzymatic biodegradation at the intracellular compartments to release RB. The enzyme-trigger enabled the FRET probe to function as an extracellular turn-ON -> intracellular turn-Off red-fluorescent signal (Probe-1). In this process, the AIE self-emission was also simultaneously restored on the TPE chromophore (blue-luminescent, Probe-2) followed by the isolation of donor and acceptor in the cytosol. As a result, this new design enabled the visualization of real-time enzyme-responsive delivery by monitoring the dual fluorescent signals from both the polymer host (blue) and encapsulated guest (red) in a single nano-platform. In vitro cytotoxicity studies established that the polymersome probe was non-toxic to cells up to 300 mu g mL(-1). Lyso-tracker staining experiments supported the FRET probe internalization in the lysosomal compartments for enzymatic-biodegradation. Live cell confocal microscopy with selective photo-excitation was used to directly monitor the enzyme-responsive FRET action in human breast cancer MCF 7 and wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblast cell lines (WT-MEFs). It was found that the tailor-made polymersome FRET probe was efficient to deliver the loaded cargo in <3 h in live cells which predicts the usefulness of the probe in biomedical research. This study focuses on design, synthesis and in vitro evaluation of inhibitory potency of two series of sialylmimetic that target an exosite (150-cavity) adjacent to the active site of influenza neuraminidases from A/California/07/2009 (H1N1) pandemic strain and A/chicken/Nakorn-Patom/Thailand/CU-K2-2004 (H5N1). The structure-activity analysis as well as 3-D structure of the complex of parental compound with the pandemic neuraminidase p09N1 revealed high flexibility of the 150-cavity towards various modification of the neuraminidase inhibitors. Furthermore, our comparison of two methods for inhibition constant determination performed at slightly different pH values suggest that the experimental conditions of the measurement could dramatically influence the outcome of the analysis in the compound-dependent manner. The catalytic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing triangular Fe(iii) clusters in the promotion of organic syntheses and photocatalysis applications have been receiving substantial attention for decades. These clusters are appealing due to the strong Lewis acidity afforded by coordinatively unsaturated sites upon the removal of solvent from the framework. In this paper, triangular Fe(iii) cluster-based MOFs were shown to be highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the solvent-free one-pot condensation of 2-aminobenzamide and alcohols to form quinazolin-4-ones under microwave irradiation. The Fe-MOF catalysts ranging from microporous to mesoporous structures with a variety of geometrical pore structures were investigated. Because of the open accessible spaces for reactants and high density of active sites, MOF-907, built from trimer Fe clusters and a mixture of two linkers, was more effective than other Fe(iii)-MOFs. The catalyst can be used for a broad substrate scope and recycled several times without a significant drop-off in its activity.

Anthrone tautomerized predominantly, under the reaction conditions, into anthrol and involved in the azo coupling reaction with aryl diazonium chloride to give the corresponding azo dye. UV-Vis experiments have supported the tautomerization of anthrone and the presence of the azo dye products in the hydrazone form. Aryl amines with broad biological applications have been involved to increase the utility of the obtained products. Preliminary antibacterial activity resulted in compounds7a,dwhich showed the lowest MIC values of 0.2 and 0.1 x 10(-3) mu g/mL againstEnterococcus feacalisandEscherichia coli, respectively.
