Herein, an interesting palladium-catalyzed procedure for the direct carbonylative thiomethylation of aromatic amine derivatives with 4-methylthio-2-butanone is developed. Hypothesis: It is expected that incorporation of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetra-methyl piperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO) and an imidazolium bromide bearing hydrophilic triethylene glycol (TEG) groups on Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell may not only result in a novel highly water-dispersible/magnetically separable multi-functional catalyst system for metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols, which operates through a synergistic relay pathway, but it could potentially provide a strong platform for simultaneous separation and recycling of all components. Experiments: The catalyst was prepared by anchoring TEMPO moieties onto a magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 functionalized with an ionic liquid bearing TEG groups. The materials was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermal gravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. The performance of the catalyst was evaluated and quantitatively measured in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in water. Findings: The catalyst exhibited excellent and stable colloidal dispersion in water and high performance in the aerobic oxidation of various types of alcohols under metal- and halogen-free reaction conditions. As hypothesized, strong synergistic effect between functionalized components was seen in the described reaction. The catalyst displayed excellent dual-adjustable-selectivity in the oxidation of primary alcohols to either the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids by tuning the reaction solvent and/or reaction time and excellent recycling behavior through a double-separation-strategy. Several ethylenedioxy-bridged bisarenes with a variety of type and number of aryl groups were synthesized to study non-covalent dispersion-driven inter- and intramolecular aryl-aryl interactions in the solid state and gas phase. Intramolecular interactions are preferably found in the gas phase. DFT calculations with and without dispersion correction show larger interacting aromatic groups increase the stabilization energy of folded conformers and decrease the intermolecular centroid-centroid distance. Single-molecule structures generally adopt folded conformations with short intramolecular aryl-aryl contacts. Gas electron diffraction experiments were performed exemplarily for 1-(pentafluorophenoxy)-2-(phenoxy)ethane. A new procedure for structure refinement was developed to deal with the conformational complexity of such molecules. The results are an experimental confirmation of the existence of folded conformations of this molecule with short intramolecular aryl-aryl distances in the gas phase. Solid-state structures are dominated by stretched structures without intramolecular aryl-aryl interactions but interactions with neighboring molecules.

Copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized via thermal decomposition and applied as a reusable and green catalyst in the synthesis of functionalized 4H-pyran derivatives using malononitrile, an aromatic aldehyde, and a beta-ketoester in ethanol at room temperature. The nanoparticles were characterized by FT-IR, EDX, SEM, TGA, and DTG analysis. The catalyst was recovered from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnet and decanting the mixture. Recycled catalyst was reused for several times without significant loss in its activity. Running the one-pot three-component reaction at room temperature, using a green solvent under environmentally friendly reaction conditions, ease of catalyst recovery and recyclability, no need for column chromatography and good to excellent yields are advantages of this protocol.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread organic contaminants in the environment, much being accumulated in soils. Although their concentrations in large cities have been studied, their levels in small cities were less studied. This study determined the concentrations, distributions, and sources of 16 USEPA priority PAHs (legacy PAHs) and 6 emerging PAHs in urban soils of four small cities. A total of 100 soil samples were collected in Florida, USA. The average Sigma 16-PAHs in urban soils of Clay county, Ocala, Pensacola, and West Palm Beach were 1821, 2748, 3115 and 4055 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Based on benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP-EQ), the 7 USEPA carcinogenic PAHs (7cPAHs) and 3 emerging carcinogenic PAHs (3cPAHs) in urban soils in Clay County averaged 223 and 3703, Ocala 319 and 4521, Pensacola 302 and 5423, and West Palm Beach 449 and 5916 mu g kg(-1), respectively. Although Sigma 7cPAHs in 87-89% of samples were lower than the Florida Soil Cleanup Target Levels (FSCTLs) for industrial sites at 700 mu g kg(-1), Sigma 3cPAHs were 13-18 times greater than Sigma 7cPAHs. Based on the PMF model and molecular diagnostic ratios, soil PAHs were dominated by similar sources in small cities, mainly from pyrogenic sources including biomass, coal and coke combustion and vehicle emissions. Fe3O4@SiO2@(CH2)(3)-urea-quinoline sulfonic acid chloride, as a novel and efficient nanomagnetic catalyst bearing urea linkers, was designed, synthesized and then fully characterized by using various techniques. To investigate the catalytic activity of the described catalyst, it was used for the synthesis of coumarin containing 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs), through a condensation reaction of aromatic aldehydes, 4-hydroxycoumarin, and ammonium acetate under solvent-free conditions. This procedure includes important aspects like simple procedure, simplicity of product isolation using water, decreasing the temperature of reaction, disuse of solvent, high to excellent yields, environmentally benign reaction conditions and short reaction times. Also, the presented catalyst was recycled and reused for at least five times with only a negligible decrease in its catalytic activity. In this study, we describe the synthesis and molecular properties of anthranilamide-based short peptides which were synthesised via ring opening of isatoic anhydride in excellent yields. These short peptides were incorporated as low molecular weight gelators (LMWG), bola amphiphile, and C-3-symmetric molecules to form hydrogels in low concentrations (0.07-0.30% (w/v)). The critical gel concentration (CGC), viscoelastic properties, secondary structure, and fibre morphology of these short peptides were influenced by the aromaticity of the capping group or by the presence of electronegative substituent (namely fluoro) and hydrophobic substituent (such as methyl) in the short peptides. In addition, the hydrogels showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus 38 and moderate toxicity against HEK cells in vitro.

The fast light-responsive dithienylethenes (DTEs) are one of the most attractive photochromic families because of their excellent thermal irreversibility and fatigue resistance. However, the all-visible-light-activated DTE system still remains challenging because most of them require the harmful high-energy ultraviolet light to trigger their photocyclization reaction. Here, we have for the first time borrowed a specific intramolecular proton transfer (IPT) process and rationally designed a series of all-visible-light-driven DTEs. Incorporating the IPT-functional group to DTE unit gives rise to an extra absorption band with a distinct red shift, which enables the photocyclization of DTEs under stimuli of visible light at 450 nm, as well as ensuring the desirable photoswitching efficiency. The isomerization from OH form to NH form induced by IPT can decrease the energy gap for excitation and photocyclization, thereby affording the all-visible-light-triggered photochromic performance, which can not only work well in a polar solvent system but also show its effectiveness in polymeric gel systems. In this regard, we can provide a general and reliable platform to construct all-visible-light-driven DTEs with excellent reversible photoswitching and broad applicability, especially with avoiding the use of harmful ultraviolet light to induce their photocyclization.
