Inspired by donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers in organic solar cell and the extended conjugation effect, a conceptual design of D–A-type mesoporous carbon nitride with benzene or thiophene as a -spacer is proposed as an efficient photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. The photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a one-pot thermopolymerization based on nucleophilic substitution and a Schiff-base chemical reaction. On the molecular level, the insertion of an in-plane benzene as a -spacer by forming covalent bonds C=N (acceptor) and C-N (donor) interrupts the continuity of tri-s-triazine units and maintains the intrinsic – conjugated electronic system. Synchronously, the enlarged electron delocalization and the intramolecular charge transfer induced by polarization provide force-directed migration of electrons, leading to boosted optical absorption capability and enhanced photogenerated carrier separation. With the synergistic effects of the mesoporous structure and excellent optical and electronic properties, a fivefold increase in the H-2 evolution rate compared with that of pristine g-C3N4 was achieved with robust performance. In addition, other simple aromatic heterocyclic compounds (e.g., pyridine, thiophene and furan)-based D–A structures with a higher hydrogen evolution rate (up to sevenfold increase) were also explored to broaden the application for the design of novel photocatalysts.

Kinetics of thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) of poly(diphenylenephthalide) (PDPh) films has been studied using mathematical modelling and DFT approximation. TSL of PDPh-film was considered to be arising from irradiative deactivation of diphenylene (DP) fragment of polymer chain in excited state formed upon recombination of the spatial separated ion-radical pairs generated by photoexcitation. Two parallel monomolecular transformations leading to excited DP have been revealed: the first path is characterized by the activation parameters of the kinetic rate constant k1 which equal to Al ti 105 sec 1 and Eat ti 70 kJ mol(-1). This path may be interpreted in terms of mechanical relaxation theory by segmental polymer mobility as electron transfer (ET) from phthalide (Ph) anion-to DP cation-radical. The second channel is supposed to be consist of two consecutive ET from triarylmethyl anion-radical to phthalide neutral (A2 ti 1 sec 1, Ea2 ti 20 kJ mol(-1)), and then to DP cation-radical (A3 N 104 sec 1, E,3 N 40 kJ mol(-1)) of the polymer chain indicating y- and fl-relaxation, respectively. The revealed mechanistic steps and electron retention efficiency estimated in B97-2/6-311 + G(d,p) approximation for the most probable anion-radicals may point out the key role of domino quantum tunneling in transfer and recombination of charges in PDPh films.

A one-pot quick and efficient multicomponent reaction has been developed for the synthesis of a new series of functionalized 8-hydroxy-4-phenyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline derivatives using 30 mol% ammonium acetate in ethanol as solvent. This economical protocol run smoothly to give variety of quinoline derivatives in 55% to 98% yield from inexpensive reagents and catalyst in mild reaction conditions. Heat processing of ready-to-drink beverages is required to ensure a microbiologically safe product, however, this can result in the loss of bioactive compounds responsible for functionality. The objective of this study was to establish the thermal stability of a novel dihydrochalcone, 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxyphloretin (2), 3′,5′-di-beta-D-glucopyranosylphloretin (3) and other Cyclopia subternata phenolic compounds, in model solutions with or without citric acid and ascorbic acid. The solutions were heated at 93, 121 and 135 degrees C, relevant to pasteurisation, commercial sterilisation and ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurisation, respectively. For most compounds, the acids decreased the second order reaction rate constants, up to 27 times. Compound 2 (46.29 +/- 0.53 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)), and to a lesser extent compound 3 (5.94 +/- 0.01 (g/100 g)(-1) h(-1)) were the most thermounstable compounds when treated at 135 degrees C without added acids. Even though differential effects were observed for compounds at different temperatures and formulations, overall, the phenolic compounds were most stable under UHT pasteurisation conditions.

This study focuses on design, synthesis and in vitro evaluation of inhibitory potency of two series of sialylmimetic that target an exosite (150-cavity) adjacent to the active site of influenza neuraminidases from A/California/07/2009 (H1N1) pandemic strain and A/chicken/Nakorn-Patom/Thailand/CU-K2-2004 (H5N1). 12-Deoxyphorbol-13-phenylacetate (DPP), found in Euphorbia resinifera, is a prototype of a new class of phorbol derivatives that function as protein kinase C activators with potent anti-tumor-promoting activity. To better understand the biosynthesis of DPP in E. resinifera and develop methods for its production, we used next-generation sequencing technologies to build a transcriptome dataset. We obtained a total of approximately 27,102,078 clean reads that were assembled into 90,448 unigenes. Of those, 129 and 59 unigenes were identified in the Terpenoid Backbone Biosynthesis (TBB) (KEGG map00900) and the Diterpenoid Biosynthesis (DB) (KEGG map00904) pathways, respectively. We investigated the expression patterns of 23 DPP biosynthesis-related genes and validated the results by quantitative real time PCR. The results showed that CMK (4-diphosphocytidyl-2-C-methyl-o-erythritol kinase), MECS (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 2,4-cyclodiphosphate synthase), HDS (1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(E)-butenyl 4-diphosphate synthase), and IPI (Isopentenyl-diphosphate Delta-isomerase) of the methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway had a higher expression compared to other genes of TBB, whereas the expression levels of genes involved in the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway were relatively lower and not significantly different from each other. Furthermore, the expression of the 23 genes in root, stem and young stem differed, and the statistical results indicated that HMGS (Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase), MVK (mevalonic acid), MECT (2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate cytidylyltransferase), MECS, HDS and IPI in the TBB pathway as well as KS in the DB pathway were significantly and positively correlated with the CS (casbene synthase) gene. These results suggested that both cytosol-localized MVA and plastid-localized MEP pathways may have a significant contribution in DPP accumulation, with MEP pathway playing a dominant role. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first transcriptome analysis of E. resinifera and the results reported here will aid the identification of functional genes and better understanding of DPP biosynthesis.

A new ionic liquid was synthesised, and its chemical structure was elucidated by FT-IR, 1D NMR, 2D NMR, and mass analyses. Some physical properties, thermal behaviour, and thermal stability of this ionic liquid were investigated. The formation of a two-protonic acid salt namely 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium sulfate instead of 4,4′-trimethylene-N,N’-dipiperidinium hydrogensulfate was evidenced by NMR analyses. The catalytic activity of this ionic liquid was demonstrated in the esterification reaction of n-butanol and glacial acetic acid under different conditions. The desired acetate was obtained in 62-88% yield without using a Dean-Stark apparatus under optimal conditions of 10 mol-% of the ionic liquid, an alcohol to glacial acetic acid mole ratio of 1.3 : 1.0, a temperature of 75-100 degrees C, and a reaction time of 4 h. alpha-Tocopherol (alpha-TCP), a highly efficient form of vitamin E, was also treated with glacial acetic acid in the presence of the ionic liquid, and O-acetyl-alpha-tocopherol (Ac-TCP) was obtained in 88.4% yield. The separation of esters was conducted during workup without the utilisation of high-cost column chromatography. The residue and ionic liquid were used in subsequent runs after the extraction of desired products. The ionic liquid exhibited high catalytic activity even after five runs with no significant change in its chemical structure and catalytic efficiency.

During the past few decades, fabrication of functional rotaxane-branched dendrimers has become one of the most attractive yet challenging topics within supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Herein, we present the successful fabrication of a family of new rotaxane-branched dendrimers containing up to 21 platinum atoms and 42 photosensitizer moieties through an efficient and controllable divergent approach. Notably, the photosensitization efficiencies of these rotaxane-branched dendrimers gradually increased with the increase of dendrimer generation. For example, third-generation rotaxane-branched dendrimer PG3 revealed 13.3-fold higher O-1(2) generation efficiency than its corresponding monomer AN. The enhanced O-1(2) generation efficiency was attributed to the enhancement of intersystem crossing (ISC) through the simple and efficient incorporation of multiple heavy atoms and photosensitizer moieties on the axles and wheels of the rotaxane units, respectively, which has been validated by UV-visible and fluorescence techniques, time-dependent density functional theory calculations, photolysis model reactions, and apparent activation energy calculations. Therefore, we develop a new promising platform of rotaxane-branched dendrimers for the preparation of effective photosensitizers.

This study’s aim was to determine the pesticide residues in 10 different vegetable commodities from the Asir region, Saudi Arabia. We evaluated 211 vegetable samples, collected from supermarkets between March 2018 and September 2018, for a total of 80 different pesticides using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) after extraction with a multi-residue method (the QuEChERS method). The results were assessed according to the maximum residue limit (MRL) provided by European regulations for each pesticide in each commodity. All lettuce, cauliflower, and carrot samples were found to be free from pesticide residues. A total of 145 samples (68.7%) contained detectable pesticide residues at or lower than MRLs, and 44 samples (20.9%) contained detectable pesticide residues above MRLs. MRL values were exceeded most often in chili pepper (14 samples) and cucumber (10 samples). Methomyl, imidacloprid, metalaxyl, and cyproconazole were the most frequently detected pesticides. Based on the results of this study, we recommend that a government-supported program for the monitoring of pesticide residues in vegetables be established to promote consumers’ health and achieve sustainable farming systems.
