Various spinel iron oxide nanoparticles (MFe(2)O4, M: Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn, Ni, Sn and Zn) have been prepared using a single step coprecipitation method. Nanoparticles were characterized using XRD, FESEM, FT-IR and UV-Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy. The catalytic activities of the synthesized nanoparticles in Hantzsch reaction have been studied. HgFe2O4 NPs exhibits the highest catalytic activity than others. The structural properties of synthesized 1,4-dihydropyridine were characterized by mass spectrometry, FT-IR and H-1- and C-13-NMR. Finally, the in silico molecular simulations for screening of blocking ability of synthesized 1,4-dihydropyridine against various TRPV6 proteins were performed. These studies revealed that examined 1,4-dihydropyridines are promising TRPV6 calcium channel blockers. As a result, molecular modeling confirmed that synthesized 1,4-DHPs are docked on the pore region of the examined TRPV6 channels.

Four polar stationary phases (ethylene-bridged hybrid silica, cyanopropyl, 2-ethylpyridine, and zwitterionic sulfobetaine) have been characterized in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) by linear free energy relationships (LFER) method with an extended set of Abraham’s descriptors. Temperature (25-55 degrees C) and pressure (110-180 bar) effects on analyte retention, separation selectivity and LFER-coefficients of chromatographic systems have been studied using the 89 test compounds of various chemical classes and carbon dioxide – methanol (9:1 v/v) binary solvent as a mobile phase. It was found that for the selected stationary phases temperature and pressure had only moderate effects on selectivity. The retention times of all analytes decrease, as can be expected, if the pressure rises at the isothermal conditions due to the increase of the fluid density and its eluting power. The effect of temperature on retention is complicated and depends both on the chemical class of analyzed compounds and the stationary phase type. Temperature and pressure variations lead to small changes in the LFER-coefficients, and general trends observed do not depend much on the stationary phase type. It may be difficult to interpret the LFER-analysis results because of the evident, more significant chromatographic phenomena. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the presence of copper sulfate, the three-component reaction of aromatic aldehydes, ethylindole-3-acetate and 4-arylidene-5-methyl-2-phenylpyrazol-3-ones, in refluxing toluene afforded spiro[carbazole-3,4′-pyrazoles] in good yields with high diastereoselectivity. Inspired by the diversity created by nature, organic chemists have been using a divergent strategy to improve the synthetic efficiency of diverse molecules. Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization has become one of the most straightforward, powerful, and atom-economical methods to construct complex scaffolds. However, C-H activation initiated divergent transformation to prepare diverse molecules is still limited. To address this challenge, we herein developed Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H olefination/annulation reaction cascades to divergently construct diverse polyheterocycles by tuning manipulations of directing groups (DGs). Up to 9 distinct scaffolds were creatively synthesized under simple conditions with good functional group tolerance, chemo-, and regioselectivity. Such a versatile strategy and its extension may encourage researchers to discover more promising manipulations of DGs for transition-metal-catalyzed C-H bond activation, making diverse available targets and materials that would have been previously out of range.

Herein is reported a substantially improved synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles by condensation of 1,2-diaminoarenes and aldehydes using methanol as the reaction medium. The developed method afforded moderate to excellent yields (33-96%) at ambient temperature, displays high functional group tolerance, is conducted open to air, and requires only one minute reaction time under catalyst- and additive-free conditions. Moreover, the efficient protocol permits scale-up to multi-gram scale synthesis of benzimidazoles and will become a method of choice when constructing such heterocyclic systems.

This study evaluated the remobilization, mineralization, and metabolism of herbicide-bound residues in soils amended with various types of sugarcane waste. Soil with bound residues of three herbicides and fresh soil samples were added to the biometric flasks, followed by the addition of vinasse, filter cake, or sugarcane straw in order to reactivate the microbial activity. In sandy loam soil, higher mineralization was observed where filter cake was added, and the maximum mineralized percentage was 7.7, 46.7, and 8.1% of diuron-, hexazinone-, and metribuzin-bound residues, respectively. Conversely, this soil presented a greater percentage of re-extractable hexazinone and metribuzin residues when vinasse was added. Among the examined herbicides, a higher percentage of bound metribuzin residues remained in the soil (57.5-75.6%). It was possible to identify both metabolites and parent compounds in the re-extracted residues, implying either species could bind to the soil. Therefore, this study has shown that bound residues of three herbicides and their metabolites can become bioavailable, and mineralized or returned to the soil solution, which could adversely affect subsequent crops or non-target organisms. Hence, the remobilization of bound residues must be taken into account when assessing the environmental risk of herbicides in soils in registration processes.

The fast light-responsive dithienylethenes (DTEs) are one of the most attractive photochromic families because of their excellent thermal irreversibility and fatigue resistance. However, the all-visible-light-activated DTE system still remains challenging because most of them require the harmful high-energy ultraviolet light to trigger their photocyclization reaction. Here, we have for the first time borrowed a specific intramolecular proton transfer (IPT) process and rationally designed a series of all-visible-light-driven DTEs. Incorporating the IPT-functional group to DTE unit gives rise to an extra absorption band with a distinct red shift, which enables the photocyclization of DTEs under stimuli of visible light at 450 nm, as well as ensuring the desirable photoswitching efficiency. The isomerization from OH form to NH form induced by IPT can decrease the energy gap for excitation and photocyclization, thereby affording the all-visible-light-triggered photochromic performance, which can not only work well in a polar solvent system but also show its effectiveness in polymeric gel systems. In this regard, we can provide a general and reliable platform to construct all-visible-light-driven DTEs with excellent reversible photoswitching and broad applicability, especially with avoiding the use of harmful ultraviolet light to induce their photocyclization.

Nitration of aromatic compounds is an important industrial process, which creates significant environmental pollution because of the harsh mineral acid catalysts. In this work, we report the synthesis and application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as green catalysts for aromatic nitration. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method and tested for nitration reactions on selected aromatic substrates, phenol, benzaldehyde, methylbenzoate, o-cresol and p-cresol. For the nitration reactions, sodium nitrite was used as the nitro-source and hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Effect of reaction conditions like, solvent, temperature and microwave treatment were studied. The magnetic nanoparticles were found to be more stable after coating with a carbon shell by a one-pot carbonization method. The reactions were fast with good product yield under solvent-free microwave conditions. The nano-catalyst was recovered magnetically after the reaction and reused for three batches of nitration, without significant loss in catalytic activity. The nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy.
