An efficient, metal free and environment friendly synthesis of isoquinoline-fused benzimidazole has been developed via in situ air oxidation. Also, syntheses of isoquinoline-fused quinazolinone heteroacenes were successfully achieved. The synthesized isoquinoline-fused benzimidazole and isoquinoline-fused quinazolinone derivatives showed lambda(max), F-max and phi(f) values in the ranges 356-394 nm, 403-444 nm and 0.063-0.471, respectively, in CHCl3.

Stoichiometric cyclomanganation of aromatic ketones and further reactions of the thus-formed manganacycles with isocyanates were first reported by Kaesz and Liebeskind in 1975 and 1990, respectively. The buildup of a closed manganese catalytic cycle for the reaction of ketones and isocyanates remains an unsolved problem. Herein, an unprecedented trio of Me2Zn/ AlCl3/AgOTf is developed to build up manganese catalysis, which enables the [3 + 2] cyclization of ketones with isocyanates via inert C-H activation to access 3-alkylidene phthalimidines in a straightforward manner unachieved by other transition metal catalyses.

10,10-Bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-3-methylphenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone, as a new aromatic diamine, was synthesized from 9(10H)-anthrone by three-step procedure. Low-temperature polycondensation of this diamine with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides produced a series of new cardo poly(ether amide)s with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.86-1.43 dL g(-1)while the weight-average and number-average molecular weights were in the range of 48,600-59,800 and 29,800-35,600 g mol(-1), respectively. All the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc),N,N-dimethylformamide,N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and pyridine, and afforded transparent, flexible, and strong films upon casting from DMAc solvent. These polymers had glass transition temperatures of 254-297 degrees C, 10% weight loss temperatures of 493-505 degrees C, and char yields of 61-64% at 800 degrees C in nitrogen. All polymers were amorphous and their films exhibited tensile strength of 80.7-101.4 MPa, elongation at break of 8.0-12.8%, and tensile modulus of 1.9-2.6 GPa. These polymers had low moisture uptake in the range of 2.13-4.02% and high transparency with an ultraviolet-visible absorption cutoff wavelength in the 322-375 nm range.

With the growing concern about safety and environmental issues, amino acid-based surfactants have great potential as sustainable and eco-friendly substances. In the present study, six N-acyl oligopeptide surfactants were synthesized using fatty acid methyl esters (i.e., methyl caprate, methyl laurate, and methyl myristate) and glycyl oligopeptides (i.e., glycylglycine and glycylglycylglycine). Surface active properties and aggregation behaviors of these surfactants were investigated using surface tension, fluorescence probe, dynamic light scattering, and microscopy measurements. The adsorption at the air-water interface and aggregation in the aqueous solution depend on the structure of both hydrophilic head-groups and hydrophobic tails. Spherical vesicles were observed in the aqueous solutions of glycylglycine derivatives, whereas short tubular aggregates were found in that of corresponding glycylglycylglycine products. Intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between the amide head-groups might be responsible for the different self-assembly behavior and microstructure of N-acyl oligopeptide surfactants in the aqueous solution.

Background Non-neoplastic anal sac disorders (ASD) are frequent presentations for dogs in primary-care practice but evidence-based information on disease occurrence and risk is sparse. This study estimates prevalence, breed associations and other risk factors as well as reporting on clinical management. Methods A cohort study of dogs attending VetCompass practices between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013. Risk factor analysis used multivariable logistic regression methods. Results Of 104,212 dogs attending 110 UK practices, the 1-year period prevalence of ASD was 4.40% (95% CI: 4.22-4.57). Compared to crossbreds, six breeds showed increased odds of ASD (Cavalier King Charles spaniel, King Charles spaniel, Cockapoo, Shih-tzu, Bichon Frise and Cocker spaniel), and six breeds showed reduced odds (Labrador Retriever, Border collie, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Lurcher, German Shepherd Dog and Boxer). Brachycephalic types had 2.6 times the odds for ASD compared to dolichocephalic types. Medication prescribed for ASD included antimicrobials (n = 480, 20.24%) and analgesics (n = 284, 11.97%). Anal sacculectomy was performed in under 1% of cases. Conclusions High prevalence, strong breed predispositions and evidence of severity suggested from the antimicrobial and analgesic therapies combined with current substantial knowledge gaps identify ASD as a key research-neglected syndrome in dogs.

The present experiment was conducted to determine whether, during periods of negative energy balance, the increase in glucose availability, despite similar DMI and greater milk production, induced by a combined supplement of folic acid and vitamin B-12 was related to effects of insulin on metabolism. Sixteen multiparous Holstein cows averaging 45 days in milk (standard deviation: 3) were assigned to 8 blocks of 2 animals each according to their milk production (45 kg/d; standard deviation: 6) during the week preceding the beginning of the experiment. Within each block, they received weekly intramuscular injections of either saline (CON) or folic acid and vitamin B-12 (VIT) during 5 consecutive weeks. During the last week, the cows were fed 75% of their ad libitum intake during 4 d. Blood samples were taken the morning before starting the feed restriction and on the third day of feed restriction. On the fourth day of feed restriction, the daily meal was not served and an intravenous glucose tolerance test was performed. During the 4 wk preceding the feed restriction, milk production and DMI were not affected by treatments. During the feed restriction, the vitamin supplement tended to decrease milk fat concentration and increase milk concentration of lactose. Plasma concentrations of homocysteine, Ile, Leu, Val, and branched-chain AA increased in VIT cows during the restriction but not in CON cows. During the glucose tolerance test, insulin peak height was lower and insulin incremental positive area under the curve tended to be lower for VIT than for CON [83 (95% confidence interval, CI: 64-108) vs. 123 (95% CI: 84-180) mu g.180 min/L, respectively]. Free fatty acid nadir was reached earlier for VIT than for CON [34 (95% CI: 26-43) vs. 46 (95% CI: 31-57) min, respectively]. Glucose area under the curve, clearance rate and peak height, insulin time to reach the peak and clearance rate, and free fatty acid nadir did not differ between VIT and CON. The reduction in insulin release during a glucose tolerance test without changes in glucose clearance rate or area under the curve suggests that the vitamin supplement improved insulin sensitivity in feed-restricted lactating dairy cows.

An efficient intramolecular radical cyclization reaction via photoredox catalysis was developed for the synthesis of dibenzocycloketone derivatives using methylene blue as a photosensitizer. Chiral polyurethanes of cinchona alkaloid were synthesized via repetitive Mizoroki-Heck (MH) coupling reaction. The Pd-catalyzed polycondensation of cinchona urethane dimers and aromatic diiodides afforded the chiral polyurethanes. A series of 1-[aryl-(thiazol-2-ylamino)-methyl]-naphthalen-2-ol derivatives were synthesized using porcine pancreatic lipase as a catalyst. The major assets of this methodology were use of biocatalyst, non-toxic organic medium, mild reaction condition and good-to-excellent yield of desired products. The synthesized Betti bases were evaluated for in vitro anti-cholinesterase activity. Test compounds exhibited potential inhibitory activities towards AChE (IC50 = 0.82 to 4.27 mu M) as well as BuChE (IC50 = 2.18 to 9.64 mu M). Compound 4g exhibited highest inhibitory activity for both AChE (IC50 = 0.82 +/- 0.05 mu M) and BuChE (IC50 = 2.18 +/- 0.21 mu M) when compared to standard reference drug galantamine inferring that it acts a dual AChE/BuChE inhibitor. Kinetic studies of compound 4g suggested a mixed-type inhibition towards both AChE and BuChE with K-i values of 8.82 mu M and 12.41 mu M, respectively. Further, cell viability assay that compound 4(a-j) do not impart any toxicity to N2a cells. In addition, molecular docking studies were performed to corroborate the biological results. The surge of photocatalytic transformation not only provides unprecedented synthetic methods, but also triggers the enthusiasm for more sustainable photocatalysts. On the other hand, oxygen is an ideal oxidant in terms of atom economy and environmental friendliness. However, the poor reactivity of oxygen at the ground state makes its utilization challenging.
