Dithioacetals are a frequently used motif in synthetic organic chemistry and have recently seen increasing attention as structural motif in promising antiviral agents against plant pathogens. Most existing reports, however, only discuss symmetrical dithioacetals. Examples of mixed dithioacetals are scarce and no general method for the selective synthesis of these compounds exists. Herein, a synthetically simple general one-step protocol was developed for the synthesis of a broad range of unsymmetrical dithioacetals consisting of one aromatic and one aliphatic thiol moiety from the corresponding aldehyde/thiol mixture. The mixed S,S-acetals were obtained in high yields, and a great variety of functional groups was tolerated. Kinetic control enabled an excellent selectivity in regard to the unsymmetrical dithioacetal.

An environmentally friendly, inexpensive, carbocatalyst, graphene oxide (GO) promoted efficient, metal-free transamidation of various carboxamides with aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic amines is demonstrated. The protocol is equally applicable to phthalimide, urea, and thioamide determining its adaptability. The oxygenated functionalities such as carbonyl (C=O), epoxy (O), carboxyl (COOH) and hydroxyl (OH), present on graphene oxide surface impart acidic properties to the catalyst. The graphene oxide being heterogeneous in nature, work efficiently under solvent-free reaction conditions providing desired products in good to excellent yields. The one-pot synthesis of 2,3-Dihydro-5H-benzo[b]-1,4-thiazepin-4-one moiety by GO catalyzed Aza Michael addition followed by intramolecular transamidation is also described. A plausible reaction mechanistic pathway involving H-bonding is discussed. The graphene oxide can be recycled and reused up to five cycles without much loss in catalytic activity.

The solubility of 2-aminobenzamide in 15 pure organic solvents, including methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, n-pentanol, isopentanol, n-hexanol, n-octanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, and methyl acetate, was measured using a gravimetric method over the temperature range from 273.15 to 324.15 K under atmosphere pressure. Four thermodynamic models, that is, Apelblat equation, 2,11 equation, nonrandom two-liquid equation, and Wilson equation, were applied to correlate the measured solubility data. The correlation results were evaluated by the relative average deviation. The results indicated that the mole fraction solubility increased with the rising of temperature in all 15 solvents, and the Wilson model gave the best fitting results. The experimental data and correlation models would be useful in the purification and synthesis process of 2-aminobenzamide.

The fast light-responsive dithienylethenes (DTEs) are one of the most attractive photochromic families because of their excellent thermal irreversibility and fatigue resistance. However, the all-visible-light-activated DTE system still remains challenging because most of them require the harmful high-energy ultraviolet light to trigger their photocyclization reaction. Here, we have for the first time borrowed a specific intramolecular proton transfer (IPT) process and rationally designed a series of all-visible-light-driven DTEs. Incorporating the IPT-functional group to DTE unit gives rise to an extra absorption band with a distinct red shift, which enables the photocyclization of DTEs under stimuli of visible light at 450 nm, as well as ensuring the desirable photoswitching efficiency. The isomerization from OH form to NH form induced by IPT can decrease the energy gap for excitation and photocyclization, thereby affording the all-visible-light-triggered photochromic performance, which can not only work well in a polar solvent system but also show its effectiveness in polymeric gel systems. In this regard, we can provide a general and reliable platform to construct all-visible-light-driven DTEs with excellent reversible photoswitching and broad applicability, especially with avoiding the use of harmful ultraviolet light to induce their photocyclization.

Higher-ordered structure motifs of nucleic acids, such as the G-quadruplex (G-4), mismatched and bulge structures, are significant research targets because these structures are involved in genetic control and diseases. Selective alkylation of these higher-order structures is challenging due to the chemical instability of the alkylating agent and side-reactions with the single- or double-strand DNA and RNA. We now report the reactive OFF-ON type alkylating agents, vinyl-quinazolinone (VQ) precursors with a sulfoxide, thiophenyl or thiomethyl group for the OFF-ON control of the vinyl reactivity. The stable VQ precursors conjugated with aminoacridine, which bind to the G-4 DNA, selectively reacted with a T base on the G-4 DNA in contrast to the single- and double-strand DNA. Additionally, the VQ precursor reacted with the T or U base in the AP-site, G-4 RNA and T-T mismatch structures. These VQ precursors would be a new candidate for the T or U specific alkylation in the higher-ordered structures of nucleic acids.

Ni@diaza crown ether complex supported on magnetic nanoparticle was provided by grafting technique. The catalytic activity of Fe3O4@diaza crown ether@Ni was explored through one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones and it was used as an efficient and recoverably constant nanocatalyst. A class of zwitterionic organocatalysts based on an amide anion/iminium cation charge pair has been developed. The zwitterions are easily prepared by reacting aziridines with aminopyridines. They are catalytically applicable to transesterifications and dehydrative esterifications. Mechanistic studies reveal that the amide anion and iminium cation work synergistically in activating the reaction partners, with the iminium cationic moiety interacting with the carbonyl substrates through nonclassical hydrogen bonding. The reaction can be applied to large-scale synthesis of biodiesel under mild conditions.

A photoinduced synthesis of S-aryl thiosulfonates through a three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sodium metabisulfite, and thiourea is achieved. The reaction scope generality with a range of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates is demonstrated. In this transformation, a radical coupling pathway is proposed with the insertion of sulfur dioxide in the presence of a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The organic sulfur motifs in S-aryl thiosulfonates originate from the convenient, cheap, and easily available thiourea and sodium metabisulfite.

The extensive development and use of new anthropogenic chemicals have inevitably led to their presence in aquatic environments. Surface waters affected by sewage effluents have been exposed to these new substances. In the present study, the occurrence of anthropogenic substances, including pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals, was investigated in one of the major rivers in Korea, the Nakdong River. Furthermore, seasonal variations in their content were determined via annual monitoring. Through the suspect and non-target screening (SNTS) technique, 58 substances were newly identified in the river and integrated in the quantitative monitoring practice. The results revealed that niflumic acid and melamine exhibited the highest median concentrations, i.e., 320 ng/L and 11,000 ng/L, respectively. The results associated with seasonal change revealed that the concentration of a considerable number of substances increased in winter when the flow rate was low. Conversely, some substances exhibited high concentrations in summer (e.g., polyethylene glycol) and spring (e.g., niflumic acid). This was attributed to the seasonal changes in the consumption, prescriptions, or the application of alternative substances. These changes were also reflected by the risk quotient (RQ) values calculated from the concentration and toxicity values. Pharmaceuticals such as telmisartan and carbamazepine and industrial chemicals such as organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and melamine accounted for approximately 90% of the total RQ. Major substances prioritized using the production of the RQ value and the detection frequency included OPFRs and telmisartan. Ball milling of calcium carbide (CaC2) enables the reaction of its ethynyl moiety with organic electrophiles. This was realized simply by co-milling CaC(2)with organic substrates in a sealed jar without the need for an additive or a catalyst. Various ketones including those bearing alpha-hydrogens were ethynylated in good yields at short reaction times. Aryl halides are also amenable substrates for this protocol as they furnish aryl ethynes through a benzyne intermediate.
