A convenient protocol for the one-pot synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones using palladium(II) complexes via dehydrogenative coupling of readily available benzyl alcohols and 2-aminobenzamide has been described. New structurally related Pd(II) N boolean AND O chelating complexes of general configuration [Pd(L)Cl(PPh3)] (where L = dimethylamino benzoylhydrazone ligands) have been designed and synthesized. The formation of the complexes has been recognized by analytical and spectral methods (FT-IR, NMR, HR-MS). The presence of a square-planar geometry around the palladium(II) ion was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. A wide range of substituted quinazolinones have been successfully achieved from a diverse range of benzyl alcohols in good to excellent yields using 1.0 mol % of catalyst loading under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, control experiments reveal that the dehydrogenative coupling reaction involves initially the formation of an aldehyde intermediate and subsequent formation of a cyclic aminal intermediate.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between inflammation-based scores and prognosis of patients who had undergone mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for large artery occlusion. METHODS: A total of 411 patients were enrolled and inflammation-based scores, such as neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR), and monocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) were calculated based on laboratory data. Prognoses were evaluated with unfavorable outcome (modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6), symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, hemorrhagic transformation of infarct, and mortality. Multivariate analyses were performed to explore the relationships of inflammation-based scores with various clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Patients with unfavorable outcome showed higher mean NLR and MHR but lower mean LMR than those with favorable outcome (NLR, 7.32 vs. 3.78, P <= 0.001; MHR, 1.42 vs. 1.15, P = 0.012; LMR, 2.76 vs. 3.70, P = 0.003). In multivariate analysis, higher NLR (>= 5.1) (odds ratio [OR], 1.58; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-2.12; P = 0.014) and higher MHR (>= 1.4) (OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.10-1.74; P = 0.028), lower LMR (<2.5) (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.08-1.58; P = 0.032) were independently associated with unfavorable outcome. CONCLUSIONS: After MT, higher NLR, higher MHR, and lower LMR were found in patients with unfavorable outcome. Inflammation-based scores, such as NLR, LMR, and MHR, might be independent factors that can predict outcomes in patients with MT. A simple metal-ligand cooperative approach for the dehydrogenative functionalization of alcohols to various substituted quinolines and quinazolin-4(3H)-ones under relatively mild reaction conditions (<= 90 degrees C) is reported. Simple and easy-to-prepare air-stable Cu(II) complexes featuring redox-active azo-aromatic scaffolds, 2-arylazo-(1,10-phenanthroline) (L-1,L-2), are used as catalyst. A wide variety of substituted quinolines and quinazolin-4(3H)-ones were synthesized in moderate to good isolated yields via dehydrogenative coupling reactions of various inexpensive and easily available starting materials under aerobic conditions. A few control experiments and deuterium labeling studies were carried out to understand the mechanism of the dehydrogenative coupling reactions, which indicate that both copper and the coordinated azo-aromatic ligand participate in a cooperative manner during the catalytic cycle. In this study, in-situ synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles was utilized as an effective approach to prepare poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinyl alcohol)-graft-acrylonitrile/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (PVA-g-AN/HEMA) membranes with ZnO nanoparticles. The membranes were characterized by using Frourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and contact angle measurements. Both of the membranes were utilized in separation of acetone/water mixtures via pervaporation technique and the optimum conditions regarding ZnO content within the membranes, acetone content in the feed solution and operating temperature were determined. PVA-g-AN/HEMA-ZnO nanocomposite membranes showed high permeation rate but low separation factor compared to PVA-ZnO nanocomposite membranes. Permeation rate and separation factor values were found to be in the range of 0.028-0.137 and 0.035-0.174 kg m(-2) h(-1), 17.61-325 and 9.4-84.5 depending on the pervaporation conditions for PVA-ZnO and PVA-g-AN/HEMA-ZnO nanocomposite membranes, respectively. Background: Aloe vera is commonly used in the primary health care of human beings since time immemorial. It is an herb widely used in various traditional systems of medicine worldwide. Systematic and scientific investigation on A. vera as a medicinal plant has drawn considerable attention, and many laboratories are involved in isolation, characterization and evaluation of phytoconstituents for their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the phytochemical, biological and medicinal attributes of A. vera against various diseases with special emphasis on underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: PubMed, EBOSCO host, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane library databases were utilized to search literature published between1977 and 2019 (fill March). Major keywords used in various combinations included: Aloe vera, phytochemistry, metabolism, pharmacological activity, prevention, treatment, health, disease, in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies. Results: Various biological and pharmacological activities of A. vera, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and skin-protective and wound-healing responses, have been attributed to the presence of many active compounds, including anthraquinones, anthrones, chromones, flavonoids, amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Conclusion: Based on various preclinical studies, A. vera constituents have enormous potential to prevent and treat various diseases. Randomized clinical trials are needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of this unique medicinal plant.

Facile green synthesis of BiOCl-TiO2 was done using combustion technique by Ixora coccinea leaf extract as fuel source. The said material was characterized using XRD, SEM, EDX, HRTEM, SAED, FTIR, and UV-DRS. The particle size was found to be approximately 60 nm and a crystallite size of 0.3 nm from TEM. The photocatalytic activity of the material was found out using photoluminescence studies, dye degradation and photocatalytic organic conversion. The material showed excellent dye degradation capacity for methylene blue with 80% of the dye degraded under 3 hrs. The stabilisation of electron-hole pair by the heterostructure gave it the ability to perform easy degradation. The degradation kinetics have also been studied. It also showed an excellent organic conversion property with formylation yield reaching up to 96% and total conversion of the reactant molecule. The material is a potent photocatalyst due to its great efficiency and can have a remarkable role in the synthesis of important organic molecules and detoxification of environment.Graphical AbstractThe heterostructure catalyses the conversion of amine to amides and mineralizes methylene blue under visible light condition.

Spain is the first olive oil producer worldwide (representing around 45%), with more than 80% of its agricultural area dedicated to this crop. The goal of this study is to assess the environmental impact of the Spanish virgin olive oil production, attending to the farming and industrial phases. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is conducted for 5 harvests in approximately 4.000 ha of olive grove in Jaen, the largest producer region of Spain. The type of farming is the most representative in Spain: conventional (non-organic), with a medium-low slope, extensive (100-150 trees per ha) and around 60% dryland orchards. The industrial phase is based on 2-phase extraction process and olive pomace valorization. The functional unit (FU) chosen for the comparative analysis is 1 kg of unpacked virgin olive oil under a perspective from cradle to gate. One of the most representative categories, climate change, places the average environmental impact in 2.43 kg CO2 eq/kg, while the range is between 1.93 and 3.00 kg CO2 eq/kg depending on the harvest. Huge differences between values are observed in the farming phase and they are mostly caused by the virgin olive oil yield of every harvest. The carbon sequestration analyses and the impact produced per FU ranges from 43.78% (for 15/16 harvest) to 46.36% (for 17/18). The impact hotspots detected in the farming phase, in terms of climate change potential, are the categories of plant protection products and herbicides (24.11% of the average value) and fertilizers (20.01%). However, the environmental impact of the industrial phase is relatively constant, with a value of 0.547-0.554 kg of CO2 equivalent. A series of novel quinazolines as tubulin inhibitors occupying three zones of colchicine domain have been designed and synthesized inspired by the recently disclosed crystal structure of verubulin analogue 6 with tubulin. Among the newly synthesized compounds, 19c showed noteworthy potency against K562, HepG2, KB, HCT-8 and MDB-MB-231 cancer cells. In vitro microtubule polymerization assays identified 19c as a potent tubulin assembly inhibitor, the binding mode of which with tubulin was confirmed by molecular modeling studies to occupy three zones of tubulin domain. Furthermore, 19c disrupted the intracellular microtubule network, caused G2/M phase arrest, induced cell apoptosis and depolarized mitochondria of K562 cells. 19c also reduced the cell migration and disrupted the capillary-like tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Importantly, 19c significantly and dose dependently inhibited tumor growth in H22 liver cancer xenograft mouse model. All these results suggested that 19c deserves further research as a novel and potential anti-tubulin agent for the treatment of cancers.

Combining the encapsulating capability of cyclodextrin and instinctive features of bentonite clay, a versatile metal free catalyst has been developed that could promote various chemical reactions such as Knoevenagel condensation, synthesis of xanthan and octahydroquinazolinones in aqueous media under ultrasonic irradiation. To prepare the catalyst, bentonite was Cl-functionalized and then reacted with isatin and guanidine successively to furnish amino functionalized bentonite. The latter then reacted with tosylated cyclodextrin. The resultant catalytic composite was characterized via XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, elemental mapping analysis, TGA and FTIR. The catalytic activity tests approved excellent activity of the catalyst as well as broad substrate scope. Notably, the catalyst could be simply recovered and reused for several reaction runs. Moreover, the activity of the composite was superior to that of its components.
