Copper(I) complexes of the types [Cu(N-N)(PPh3)(2)]NO3(LC41-LC44) and [Cu(N-N)(PPh3)(NO3)] (LC45) carrying 3-substituted 1-pyridine-2-ylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine (N-N) derivatives and triphenylphosphine (PPh3) ligands have been prepared. The synthesized copper(I)-phosphine complexes were fully characterized by NMR, IR, ESI-MS and UV-visible spectroscopy as well as by cyclic voltammetry. Selected structures such as LC42, LC43 and LC45 were additionally analysed by single-crystal X-ray method, which show that copper(I) centre adopts a highly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The(1)H and(13)C NMR spectral data of the complexes throw light on the nature of metal-ligand bonding. They display d pi-pi* metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition and show quasireversible Cu-I/Cu(II)metal oxidation. Among the copper(I)-phosphine complexes, LC41-LC44 exhibit moderate cytotoxicity (IC50: 24 h, 67-74 mu M; 48 h, 58-70 mu M) against human lung epithelial adenocarcinoma A549 cells, whereas LC45 displays the best activity (IC50: 24 h, 42 mu M; 48 h, 34 mu M) for A549 cancer cell line, which is better than that of the commercial antitumor drug cisplatin. All the complexes also displayed excellent selectivity by being relatively inactive against the human lung epithelial L132 normal cell line with selectivity index (SI) values ranging from 3.4 to 7.4. The complexes block cell cycle progression of A549 cells in G(0)/G(1)phase. FACSVerse analyses are suggestive of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptotic cell death induced by the LC41, LC43 and LC45. The induction of apoptosis in A549 cells was shown by Annexin V with propidium iodide (PI) and 4 ‘,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining methods and established the ability of LC41, LC43 and LC45 to accumulate in the cell nuclei.

Two anthracene-based diamine crosslinkers were used to cure a range of commercially available monomers to produce four highly photoreversible crosslinked epoxy polymers. Through careful selection of the epoxy monomers used, the properties of the resultant polymer networks were varied to create a coating material that possessed room-temperature light-stimulated healing. Of the four coatings created, the best healing performance was exhibited by the two most flexible systems, both of these also exhibited the thermal and mechanical performance necessary for coatings. By using anthracene, the utilization of a wide range of wavelengths in the healing process is possible, which in applications such as industrial coatings would be of significant benefit.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are difficult substrates for hydrogenation because of the thermodynamic stability caused by aromaticity. We report here the first chromium- and cobalt-catalyzed, regiocontrolled hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ambient temperature. These reactions were promoted by low-cost chromium or cobalt salts combined with diimino/carbene ligand and methylmagnesium bromide and are characterized by high regioselectivity and expanded substrate scope that includes tetracene, tetraphene, pentacene, and perylene, which have rarely been reduced. The approach provides a cost-effective catalytic protocol for hydrogenation, is scalable, and can be utilized in the synthesis of tetrabromo- and carboxyl-substituted motifs through functionalization of the hydrogenation product. The systematic theoretical mechanistic modelings suggest that low-valent Cr and Co monohydride species, most likely from zerovalent transition metals, are capable of mediating these hydrogenations of fused PAHs.

To explore new skeleton with nematicidal activity, a series of novel 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4-one derivatives containing piperazine as linker were synthesized and varied fragments were also introduced to increase structure diversity of the new skeleton. Their inhibitory activities in vivo were evaluated against Meloidogyne incognita. The newly prepared compounds A6, A8, A21, A28 and A38 exhibited more than 50% inhibition at the concentration of 20 mg/L. Especially compound A6 displayed 71.4% inhibition against Meloidogyne incognita at the concentration of 20 mg/L. The nematicidal activities varied significantly depending on the types and positions of the substituents, which provided guidance for further structure modification. WRKY transcription factors participate in the salt stress responses of various plant species, but the underlying functional mechanisms are not well understood, particularly in grape. In this study, the role of VvWRKY13 in the salt stress response was characterized and the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms were explored. The results show that VvWRKY13 expression was induced by salt stress, and the VvWRKY13 transcript level in the salt stress-sensitive cultivar was significantly higher than that in the resistant cultivars. Overexpression of VvWRKY13 in Arabidopsis significantly inhibited the growth of transgenic plants under salt stress, indicating that VvWRKY13 has a negative effect on the salt stress response. The photosynthetic rate, contents of proline and soluble sugars, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as transcriptional levels of proline and soluble sugar metabolic genes, such as P5CS1, SS1, SS2 and G6PDH, as well as SOD and CAT encoding genes CAT1, CAT2, and Cu/Zn-SOD, all decreased under salt stress, whereas hydrogen peroxide and oxygen-free radical contents increased in transgenic Arabidopsis plants compared with those of wild-type plants. VvWRKY13 suppressed upregulation of SnRK2.3, ABF1, ABF2, ABF3, RD29B, RD29A, and RAB18 induced by salt stress, but showed no significant effect on the transcript levels of SnRK2.2, SnRK2.6, or RD22, indicating that VvWRKY13 affects salt stress tolerance via a specific abscisic acid signaling pathway. Key message VvWRKY13, isolated from grapevine, negatively regulate salt stress tolerance by depressing photosynthetic capacity, inhibiting salt-induced accumulation of osmolytes andup-regulation in antioxidant activity as well as expression of related genes. VvWRKY13 may affects salt stress tolerance by specific ABA signalling.

Trace chemicals are common in marine and freshwater ecosystems globally. It is recognized that in the environment, individual chemicals are rarely found in isolation. Insufficient work has examined which chemicals co-occur and which methods best identify these mixtures. Using an existing data set, we found evidence that simple correlation analysis is better at identifying mixtures of commonly co-occurring trace chemicals than more commonly used PCA methods. Moreover, simple correlation analysis, unlike PCA, can be used in cases with unbalanced designs and with data points below reportable limits. Application of this approach allowed identification of 10 groups of chemicals commonly found together in freshwaters of the continental US, representing common chemical syndromes. Better identification of co-occurring chemical combinations could aid in our understanding of biological and ecological effects of aquatic contaminants. This research provides evidence of correlation analyses as a more effective method for identifying commonly co-occurring aquatic contaminants. We also examined the patterns of these mixtures with a dataset consisting of concentrations of 406 trace chemicals from 38 sample locations across the continental US. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Chiral phosphoric acids have received considerable attention because of their excellent performance in many asymmetric catalytic reactions. However, the full breadth of means by which the stereoselectivity of these catalysts can be tuned has not been fully elucidated. Herein, the origin of enantioselectivity in a catalytic asymmetric synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones using SPINOL-derived chiral phosphoric acids (ACS Catal. 2013, 3, 2244) is explored using density functional theory computations. We show that the enantioselectivity of this reaction is determined during the intramolecular amine addition step of an organocascade sequence and is modulated by differential noncovalent interactions of the substrate with the aryl groups of the catalyst as well as CH center dot center dot center dot O and NH center dot center dot center dot O interactions with the phosphate core of the catalyst. Most notably, we demonstrate that the strength of these latter interactions is modulated by their position within the electrostatic environment created by the catalyst. This provides clear evidence of the ability to precisely control the selectivity of an organocatalyzed reaction through the tuning of electrostatic interactions.
