Production of nanocomposites from macro-scale materials in situ in a melting compounder is highly desirable yet challenging. In this study, we develop a highly efficient approach for the preparation of cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composite materials from as-received wood pulp fibers, in which nanofibrillation-assisting plasticizers (urea and urea derivatives) and a diblock copolymer dispersant are used. The most effective plasticizer is urea, which plays a crucial role in producing CNF with less fragmentation during the kneading step, owing to the plasticization/nanofibrillation and the reaction with hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibers into a carbamate. The diblock copolymer as a dispersant enables the stabilization of the appropriate dispersion of the produced CNF in nonpolar HDPE. The resulting composites exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties, including a 6.9-fold increase in the Youngs modulus with 10 wt % loading of wood pulp fibers over that of neat HDPE.

A one pot sequential addition protocol for synthesis of polycyclic quinazolines with beta-amino acid motifs has been achieved starting from anthranilamide. Initialin situformation of 2-(2-bromophenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one followed by addition of alkyl cyanoacetates catalyzed by copper (I) salts gives the target compound in good to excellent yields. The expedient and facile cascade protocol involves nucleophilic alpha-arylation, intramolecular cycloamidation of nitriles followed by 1,3-hydrogen shift allowing direct access to 6-amino-8-oxo-8H-isoquinolino[1,2-b]quinazoline-5-carboxylates.

Cuprous halides, best described as (CuX)(n) (X = Cl-, Br-, and I-) in their solid state, catalyse selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols with the assistance of both NMI (N-methylimidazole) and TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl), and the iodide generally demonstrates the highest activity, for example, in the oxidation of 1-octanol at ambient temperature under 24 h’ reaction. However, in the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols, the chloride showed superiority to the iodide in that the aerobic oxidation was quantitatively completed within 3 h at ambient temperature whereas the iodide showed only about half the activity of the chloride analogue. By probing the system using electrochemistry, electric conductivity, and H-1 NMR titration, it was revealed that the surprising anomaly was due to the difference in the rate of forming active species, [Cu (NMI)(2)X(MeCN)], from the polymeric solid in a two-stage process. Substrates expansion of 11 benzylic alcohols indicated that CuCl/NMI/TEMPO system demonstrated quantitative conversion of benzylic alcohols into corresponding aldehydes within 3 h and showed great tolerance to the substituents on the phenyl ring of the substrates. Furthermore, electron-withdrawing substituent was beneficial to the oxidation and could offset the steric effect at orthro-substituent. Such a behaviour suggested that in the catalysis, increasing the acidity of the hydroxyl group (OH) of the substrates could ease the oxidation, which implied that the deprotonation via an internal pathway might be one of the rate-determining steps. Our results also showed that the anion halide participated actively in the catalysis by coordinating to Cu(I) in the active species.

The possibility of a single-stage solvent-free stereoselective synthesis of a spirocyclic compound from the natural bicyclic monoterpenoid (-)-fenchone and anthranilamide has been shown for the first time. The molecular and crystal structure of (1R,2S,4S)-1,3,3-trimethyl-10H-spiro[bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,2′-quinazolin]-4′(3’H)-one, C17H22N2O, was established by X-ray diffraction though the chirality was assumed via the known reactant connectivity and H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. It has shown that in the molecule, for steric reasons, there is an elongation of the Me2C-C(N)N bond to 1.603 (5) A degrees. The formation of dimers via N-H center dot center dot center dot O C hydrogen bonds with an interaction energy of 93.30 kJ mol(-1) and through cavities (33.7% of the unit-cell volume) was established in the packing of the molecules. There are no pi-stacking interactions in the structure.

Coal fluidity is an important parameter in coal blending techniques for coke making because it strongly influences coke qualities. On the other hand, recently, the amount of high fluidity coal has been limited. To cope with this problem, caking additive method which improves fluidity of coal has been developed and commercialized. However, since tight supply of high fluidity coal is anticipated in the future, it is of great importance to develop more effective caking additive. Therefore, in this study, we investigated effect of 11 kinds of polyaromatic hydrocarbons which include oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen containing compounds on coal fluidity in order to search for more effective chemical substances. The additives were added to low fluidity coal, and fluidity analyses were carried out according to the Gieseler plastometer method. Addition of sulfur and oxygen containing compounds lowered fluidity of coal, whereas addition of aromatic amines enhanced fluidity of coal. Coal fluidity ameliorated with increasing the molecular weight of aromatic amine, and N,N’-di-2-naphthyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (DNPD) was the most effective aromatic amine in this study. Carbonization tests in an electric furnace were conducted to investigate an effect of DNPD on coke strength. As a result of adding only 1 wt% DNPD, fluidity of blended coal and coke strength (Drum Index) were highly improved.

Background: Aloe vera is commonly used in the primary health care of human beings since time immemorial. It is an herb widely used in various traditional systems of medicine worldwide. Systematic and scientific investigation on A. vera as a medicinal plant has drawn considerable attention, and many laboratories are involved in isolation, characterization and evaluation of phytoconstituents for their nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the phytochemical, biological and medicinal attributes of A. vera against various diseases with special emphasis on underlying mechanisms of action. Methods: PubMed, EBOSCO host, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane library databases were utilized to search literature published between1977 and 2019 (fill March). Major keywords used in various combinations included: Aloe vera, phytochemistry, metabolism, pharmacological activity, prevention, treatment, health, disease, in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies. Results: Various biological and pharmacological activities of A. vera, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and skin-protective and wound-healing responses, have been attributed to the presence of many active compounds, including anthraquinones, anthrones, chromones, flavonoids, amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Conclusion: Based on various preclinical studies, A. vera constituents have enormous potential to prevent and treat various diseases. Randomized clinical trials are needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of this unique medicinal plant.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Latino children in immigrant families experience health care disparities. Text messaging interventions for this population may address disparities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a Spanish-language text messaging intervention on infant emergency department use and well care and vaccine adherence. METHODS: The Salud al Dia intervention, an educational video and interactive text messages throughout the child’s first year of life, was evaluated via randomized controlled trial conducted in an urban, academic pediatric primary care practice from February 2016 to December 2017. Inclusion criteria were publicly insured singleton infant < 2 months of age; parent age > 18, with Spanish as the preferred health care language; and at least 1 household cellular phone. Primary outcomes were abstracted from the electronic medical record at age 15 months. Intention-to-treat analyses were used. RESULTS: A total of 157 parent-child dyads were randomly assigned to Salud al Dia (n = 79) or control groups (n = 78). Among all participants, mean parent age was 29.3 years (SD: 6.2 years), mean years in the United States was 7.3 (SD: 5.3 years), and 87% of parents had limited or marginal health literacy. The incidence rate ratio for emergency department use for the control versus intervention group was 1.48 (95% confidence interval: 1.04-2.12). A greater proportion of intervention infants received 2 flu vaccine doses compared with controls (81% vs 67%; P = .04). CONCLUSIONS: This Spanish-language text messaging intervention reduced emergency department use and increased flu vaccine receipt among a population at high risk for health care disparities. Tailored text message interventions are a promising method for addressing disparities.

A series of 5-aryl-3-(4-oxo-2-phenylquinazolin-3(4H)-yl)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)thiazolidin-4-ones were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Various spectral techniques e.g., IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and Mass spectrometry were used to determine structure of novel synthesized compounds. The title compounds showed good to excellent inhibition potency for respective Gram-positive bacterial strains and Gram-negative bacterial strains. These compounds exhibited a broad spectrum of inhibitory activity. Molecular docking studies against microbial DNA gyrase sub unit B could provide valuable insights into the binding affinity of these molecules and their plausible mechanism of antimicrobial action. Compounds 5a, 5d, 5f and 5h, 5i, 5j, 5o exhibited excellent activity against bacterial and fungal strains respectively.
